Inclusive design as promoter of social transformations : understanding androgyny in contemporary society

No full text
This article results from a research work for the elaboration of a dissertation, within the master’s degree course in Integrated Design of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo—Portugal, developed from Androgyny studies and its influence on genderless product design. With the development of this research, supported by literature review and research works, survey and case studies, issues related to the identity of the individual were deeply studied and understood, namely those related to gender expression, as well as the interpretation of social and cultural action in Androgynous Identity formation. Bearing in mind this theoretical framework, it was possible to identify and analyse products designed under the influence of genderless concept and its definition. The few cases that fit within the scope of the study reveal a diversity of approaches that are considered to be more based on commercial arguments than on an honest concern with gender issues and their influence on the characteristics of the product. Therefore, it is thought that there is an opportunity to investigate more about the subject at least in order to highlight the theme framed by the purposes of Design.101E-1BBD-F278 | João Carlos Monteiro Martinsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influencia del sistema de producción en la calidad de la canal de cerdos de raza bísara

Get PDF

Assessment of RC hollow-piers for seismic limit state of damage - Direct repair costs

Get PDF
Due to the vulnerability of reinforced concrete hollow piers subjected to seismic actions, it becomes urgent to assess the expected shear damage and its evolution with the increase of the intensity level. Additionally, the focus of the scientific research dedicated to seismic behaviour of these elements is still reduced, in particular with regard to the limit states of damage and to the economic consequences of repairing and retrofitting the physical damages existing in RC hollow piers subjected to the seismic action. This information is deemed crucial when cost-benefit analysis is concerned for the definition of measures for repair and retrofit of seismic damage. This paper focus on the issue of damage to hollow piers due to the seismic action, proposing a methodology to characterize the limit states of damage under the perspective of the physical behaviour. It also intends to discuss adequate strengthening strategies and their direct costs, associated with each seismic physical limit state of damage. An extensive review of numerous cyclic experimental works on RC hollow piers will be performed, and in liaise with specialized construction companies, the direct repair costs will be estimated.6612-034D-AE05 | PEDRO DA SILVA DELGADON/

Structural mechanical simulation to optimize the sensor arm geometry to be implemented on cranial remodeling orthosis

Get PDF
For the treatment of moderate and severe cases of deformational plagiocephaly, an asymmetrical deformation of the skull, a cranial remodeling orthosis (CRO) is used. For the development of a new CRO concept, a pressure sensor grid is placed inside the orthosis that will allow the monitoring of excessive pressures and incorrect CRO positioning throughout the treatment. To implement the sensor grid in the CRO, high mobility of the sensor arms structure that joins the several sensors of this grid is required, however, it is intended that this procedure does not damage the printed copper tracks on the sensor structure. In this study, computer simulations were performed to optimize the sensor arm structure geometry, minimizing undesirable mechanical behavior in the sensor structure when subjected to tensile forces and displacements applied during its placement in the CRO. It was observed that the different sensor arm structures geometries have different effects on the mechanical behavior of the sensor structure when subjected to tensile forces and tensile displacement. The zigzag curve geometry presents the best performance based on high mobility without intense strain on the structure that could damage the printed copper tracks.511F-603F-4B30 | Francisco MirandaN/

Manufacturing and testing of 3D-printed polymer isogrid lattice cylindrical shell structures

Get PDF
This article focuses on the use of fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology to manufacture and test polymer isogrid lattice cylindrical shell (LCS) structures with equilateral triangular unit-cells using non-professional and conventional 3D printing software and hardware. A parametric and automated 3D model for these structures is created in SolidWorks using the Visual Basic (VBA) programming language. Different configurations of the isogrid LCS structure are modeled, manufactured, and tested in order to determine the compressive structural strength and stiffness, as well as to investigate structural instability. The experimental results are used to deduce the inherent limitations of 3D printing, including the inhomogeneities, imperfections, and non-isotropic nature of FDM, as well as the effect of the configurations on local buckling behavior. The results suggest that coupling between local and global buckling has an impact on the compressive stiffness and strength of LCS structures, reducing the accuracy of structural designs neglecting these effects.F71E-503E-DE74 | ADÉLIO MANUEL DE SOUSA CAVADASN/

Using aerial thermal imagery to evaluate water status in Vitis vinifera cv. Loureiro

Get PDF
The crop water stress index (CWSI) is a widely used analytical tool based on portable thermography. This method can be useful in replacing the traditional stem water potential method obtained with a Scholander chamber (PMS Model 600) because the latter is not feasible for large-scale studies due to the time involved and the fact that it is invasive and can cause damage to the plant. The present work had three objectives: (i) to understand if CWSI estimated using an aerial sensor can estimate the water status of the plant; (ii) to compare CWSI from aerial-thermographic and portable thermal cameras with stem water potential; (iii) to estimate the capacity of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to calculate and spatialize CWSI. Monitoring of CWSI (CWSIP) using a portable device was performed directly in the canopy, by measuring reference temperatures (Tdry, Twet, and canopy temperature (Tc)). Aerial CWSI calculation was performed using two models: (i) a simplified CWSI model (CWSIS), where the Tdry and Twet were estimated as the average of 1% of the extreme temperature, and (ii) an air temperature model (CWSITair) where air temperatures (Tair + 7 ◦C) were recorded as Tdry and in the Twet, considering the average of the lowest 33% of histogram values. In these two models, the Tc value corresponded to the temperature value in each pixel of the aerial thermal image. The results show that it was possible to estimate CWSI by calculating canopy temperatures and spatializing CWSI using aerial thermography. Of the two models, it was found that for CWSITair, CWSIS (R2 = 0.55) evaluated crop water stress better than stem water potential. The CWSIS had good correlation compared with the portable sensor (R2 = 0.58), and its application in field measurements is possible.E518-D54F-9490 | Susana Miguel Afonso Mendes MouraN/

This report was conducted in the framework of the Supervised Teaching Practice (PES), in two contexts, one in the 1st cycle and another in the 2nd cycle of basic education. The carried out project was carried out with a 5th grade class, in the Portuguese Language area, with 16 students as participants. This study aims to understand how Human Rights can be worked through the work of Alves Redol. Thus, the following research questions were defined: Which rights can be worked on using Alves Redol's work? At what point during the class can this knowledge be mobilised? Does the intertextual work between Alves Redol’s work and the Convention on Human Rights favour a greater appropriation of these rights? For this study, qualitative methods were used, more specifically the case study. Data were collected through the realization of activities and an initial and final questionnaire, the collection of students' work, audiovisual media and direct observation. In the analysis of this data, the initial and the final questionnaires were compared. It is thus concluded that, in this case, it was possible to discuss Human Rights interdisciplinary with the Portuguese Language area, having as a motto the literary text. This is because the results of this study show that students were able to appropriate the concept of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, define it, and list several rights present in the declaration, recognise attitudes and implement them. At the same time, they developed skills in reading and interpreting literary texts, being able to make inferences more proficiently, starting from the work of Alves Redol, reading the interdictions and analysing the characters' behaviours

Age-related influences on somatic and physical fitness of elite police agents (Influencias de la edad en la aptitud física y somática de los agentes de policía de élite)

Get PDF
Background: Elite police officers must be physically fit to perform their job occupational demands but information on the effect of age in their physical fitness and somatic composition is scarce. Our aim is to describe the effect of age on somatic and physical fitness of a Special Police Unit (SPU); and to understand age-related changes. Methods: 117 SPU elements of a total of 218, aged 42.6±4.2 years, were assessed on their somatic (height, weight, circumferences, skinfolds); body composition (BMI, body fat); and physical fitness (maximal, power and endurance strength, aerobic power, and flexibility). T-tests were used for comparing results to other police studies. Regression analysis was used to detect the effect of age for somatic and fitness variable. Results: SPU elements showed a homogeneous and suitable fitness condition. No somatic differences were found along age, but annual age losses were found for physical fitness, namely for strength: left handgrip strength (95%CI -0.70 to -0.12), bench press (95%CI -2.34 to -0.89), squat jump (95%CI -0.70 to -0.12), medicinal ball throw (95%CI -0.62 to -0.25), push-ups (95%CI -1.64 to -0.66), pull-ups (95%CI -0.53 to -0.11), sit-ups (95%CI -1.33 to -0.27), but also on the VO2max (-0.535 to -0.115). Conclusions: Portuguese SPU elements showed a good somatic and physical fitness condition according to the requirements of their profession. Regardless the effect of age they were able to maintain a good somatic fitness and a very good aerobic power along the years. The loss of strength was the most associated with age.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo RodriguesN/

Intramuscular fatty acid composition of the longissimus muscle of unweaned minhota breed calves at different slaughter age

Get PDF
Meat productions from sixteen local Portuguese cattle breeds represent high economic and cultural value for local populations. Among these, Minhota is one of the most important on meat aptitude located on the northwest of the country. This breed is used for high-quality meat. This study describes the influence of slaughter age, corresponding veal (6 months) and beef (9 months) and sex, reared in a traditional production system, on intramuscular fatty acid composition of the longissimus muscle and nutritional quality. Samples of the longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle were analysed for fatty acid composition of intramuscular fat from 41 Minhota breed animals. Unweaned veal (22) and beef (19), corresponding to males (n=25) and females (n=16) were analysed. Both groups of animals were reared in a traditional production system. The meat from the Minhota breed is a valuable source of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), particularly the C-20 and C-22 n-3 fatty acids in the human diet. A low n-6:n-3 ratio show that fat in this breed has a good nutritional value. The differences in fat composition from veal and beef could be attributed to the fact that maternal suckling is more important in the youngest animals.FE1B-06B2-126F | José Pedro Pinto de AraújoN/
