The influence of students self-determination and personal achievement goals in learning and engagement: A mediation model for traditional and nontraditional students
Self-determination theory (SDT) and achievement goal theory (AGT) assume that students’
level of self-determination and the goals they pursue in class are important factors in engagement
and learning. The aims of this study were to: (1) investigate the links between the students’ types
of motivation and personal achievement goals; (2) explore how these two sets of variables relate
to learning, engagement, and exploring mediation effects; and (3) understand the specificities of
nontraditional students vs. traditional students, regarding the way these variables relate to each other.
The study used a sample of 361 Portuguese adult students, 138 traditional (younger than 25 years
old), and 223 nontraditional (active adults returning to education, 25 or older). The instruments used
were: Self-regulation Questionnaire—Learning, Personal Achievement Goal Orientations Scale, Adult
Learning Strategies Evaluation Scale and Behavioral Engagement Questionnaire. Path analysis for the
total sample revealed that mastery goals mediated the relationship between autonomous motivation
and all educational outcomes, and performance-avoidance goals mediated the relationship between
introjected regulation, external regulation, and behavioral and emotional engagement. Multiple-
group path analysis revealed a much stronger pattern of relationships for nontraditional students,
especially between the SDT and AGT variables. The theoretical and practical implications of the
study are discussed.8C1E-AFB9-6BE1 | Maria Teresa Martins GonçalvesN/
Construction of an instrument for the evaluation of critical thinking: previous considerations
Seismic analysis of a Mexican viaduct with nonlinear modeling of soil-structure interaction
Every day the need to understand earthquakes and how that phenomenon affects construction grows, to make it possible to prevent and minimize inherent risks to their relation. That need increases when projects are located in regions with large seismicity. Therefore, the present paper, which was developed in partnership with GEG – Gabinete de Estruturas e Geotecnia, has, as a final goal, to study and compare the variety of calculation methods available on Eurocode 8 to design and evaluate earthquake resistant structures, using a real case study. The methods approached are linear dynamic analysis, also known as spectral analysis, nonlinear static analysis, also recognized as pushover analysis, and non-linear dynamic analysis, well-known as time-history analysis. Simultaneously to the seismic analyses, it is developed a detailed study of the parameters that affect the damping of soil-structure interaction.6612-034D-AE05 | PEDRO DA SILVA DELGADON/

This report was developed in the context of the Supervised Teaching Practice (PES), integrated in the Master's Degree in Primary Education Course of Portuguese Language, History & Geography in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. It summarizes the study and pedagogical course developed during the intervention in the educational context, highlighting the didactic sequences in the different curricular areas, the strategies used in the classroom and the pedagogical materials produced. The study was developed in the municipality and district of Viana do Castelo, in a 5th grade class, composed by 25 students, for 11 weeks. It was centered, mainly, around the problem of integrating digital educational resources in History and Geography of Portugal classes, and in how to articulate technology and multimedia in the workshop treatment of certain periods of History and Geography of Portugal. It tries to understand how digital resources can be used to provide stimulating learning scenarios and to develop skills in the History and Geography of Portugal subject. A research paradigm of a qualitative nature was adopted with contributions from the constructivist line and the workshop-class (aula-oficina) in History Education. Data were collected mostly in the classroom, based on naturalistic and participant observation, audiovisual recordings, interviews, students' documents, and a survey questionnaire. The results obtained in the research allowed us to conclude that the integration of multimedia resources in the classroom makes the teaching-learning process richer, more complete and captivating. Throughout the implementation period, there was a greater interest and enthusiasm from the students in participating in tasks that involved the use of digital educational resources, as well as a more sustained level of understanding of the content. Students remembered much more clearly the information acquired through digital resources or interactive activities compared to the information covered in lecture mode. This study concludes that there has been an effort by teachers to implement digital resources in their classes, that there are several virtualities in using the resources of the Present to work the Past, and that technology and multimedia resources are indeed relevant in the teaching of History and Geography of Portugal

Relationship between power condition, agility, and speed performance among young roller hockey elite players
Purpose. The study was intended to describe the correlations between speed performance (11 m, 22 m, and 33 m) and agility test in skates with determinants of muscular power (squat jump, countermovement jump) in young Portuguese roller hockey athletes involved in a regional selection.
Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 10 male roller hockey players with mean (± SD) age of 14.20 (0.57) years, involved in the Portuguese national competition of under-15, making part of the final Oporto district selection of players to participate in inter-regional selections competition. Their mean (± SD) weight, height, body mass index, and sum of the skinfolds were 58.62 (8.78) kg, 165.72 (8.45) cm, 21.26 (1.52) kg/m2, 51.80 (14.91) mm, respectively. Furthermore, it strength was measured with squat jump and countermovement jump; sprinting time at 11 m, 22 m, and 33 m was determined, as well as time in an agility t-test, conducted in roller skating. Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated to test the associations.
Results. Significant inverse correlations between vertical jumps, a practical method of power training monitoring, and linear velocity in skating (countermovement jump vs. speed, –0.78) were found. Despite the increasing complexity of the agility test, a moderate inverse correlation with strength was observed, too (–0.48).
Conclusions. Lower limbs explosive strength turned out a strong predictor of skating linear speed and agility among young roller hockey players, providing a simple evaluation tool of important determinants of performance.D915-7373-ED16 | Cesar LeaoN/
This research work intends to present a study on the quality of employment and its articulation with the management of human resources in Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS). The social sector presents itself as an incrementally more competitive sector associated with the rapid and progressive aging of the population. It is pertinent to understand the quality of employment in the social sector and the relevance of human resources management practices, since, traditionally, the social sector has not been the most common target of this type of studies on quality of employment or people management. The literature is still scarce in this matter and it is important that future paths be traced in these areas organizationally. The research questions developed are related to the formal and integrated Human Resources Management Policies and Practices and the perception of technical directors on the impact of Human Resources Management practices on organizational sustainability and job quality. The usefulness, visibility, understanding and agreement that they attribute to each human resource management practice was analyzed and discussed.
Our investigation used the case study using semi-structured interviews with technical directors of the IPSS limited to a municipality in the North of Portugal. In this selected council, the aging rate was 138.1% in 2001, increased to 187.0% in 2011 and to 237.0% in 2020 (Pordata , 2020). Data were analyzed using Bardin's content analysis technique.
The results suggest that human resource management can have an impact on the quality of employment in these institutions. The quality of employment in institutions is limited and the implementation of organizationally formalized human resources management policies and practices is very residual or null. The results suggest that the human resources management function is still at a very embryonic, non-formalized maturity level
Perceptions of farm animal sentience and suffering : evidence from the BRIC countries and the United States
In this study, we examined how beliefs about farm animal sentience and their suffering vary across culture and demographic characteristics. A total of N = 5027) questionnaires were administered in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and the USA. Brazilians showed higher and Chinese lower levels of perceived animal sentience. In Russia and India, the perception of suffering and sentience increases with age, with similar levels to those observed in the USA. In all the countries, more people agreed than disagreed that animals are sentient. Men in India show higher levels of agreement with the relation between eating meat and animal suffering, followed by women in Brazil and China. Lower levels of agreement are observed in Americans and Chinese. Women show higher levels of compassion than men. In Russia, there is a slightly higher level of agreement between men and in the USA younger men agree more. Young American men show higher levels of agreement, while in India and China age has the opposite effect. For fair trading competition, it is important to standardize procedures and respect the demand for both animal protein and its ethical production. Overall, our results showed that perceptions of farm animal sentience and suffering vary substantially across countries and demographic groups. These differences could have important consequences for the perceived ethicality of meat production and consumption, and for global trade in animal products.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da MataN/
Photography: a resource to capture outdoor math
Several researchers refer that photography outside the classroom motivates students, for
the understanding of math contents. This paper, is part of a broader project centred on active
learning of mathematics outside the classroom, describes a study where elementary preservice
teachers capture photos in the environment that allow task design. In particular, we want to identify
what aspects of the environment were privileged by the mathematical eye of the future teachers and
to understand what are their main difficulties when designing mathematical tasks. Results suggest
that the participants chose photos privileging elements related with buildings, which mobilized
Geometry and Measurement subjects. They expressed that the design of high-level cognitive tasks
was not an easy process. The use of photography had a positive impact on them, providing a “closer
look” at everyday objects, searching for the underlying mathematics more consciously, developing
their “math eye”.0D1E-4824-1244 | Ana Cristina Coelho Barbosainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Obesidade infantil: dimensão do problema, perspetivas futuras e questões metodológicas
