The competitive environment in the organizational world has been rising in an exponential way, walking side to side with the technological development. These changes bring new challenges. It is necessary to maintain a learning rhythm, understand new skills, work as a team and achieve goals. That said, these developments won’t be possible in any organizational environment without communication and structures that provide better working conditions to the employees. This study’s purpose is the disclosure and consequential exploration of alternative structures that improve the relations between the individuals involved in the organizational communication process, also perfecting the company’s performance and the quality of life of these same individuals, synchronously. This time, a qualitative methodological approach was chosen, using exploratory interviews. Based on the 2021’s Great Place to Work ranking, an effort was made to interview the best “workplaces” in Portugal, identified through two tools, trust index – questionnaire directed to the workers and culture audit – questionnaire directed to the organization. The developed interview is based on five dimensions that we understand as essential to this recognition, being them: Salary conditions and other benefits; Career development; Safety regarding their work situation; Positive balance between work and personal life; and Positive work atmosphere. The results point to the existence of a connection between the alternative structures conceived to improve the organizational climate and the employee’s satisfaction. Motivation is the watchword when strategies and techniques focused on endomarketing, employer branding and the search for the right organization climate and motivational factors are applied. Consequently, the productivity and results from this are beneficial for both the company and the employee, making them feel essential to all the processes. It should be noted that in all the concepts studied and all the dimensions explored in conjunction with the organizations, the us

This report was designed within the scope of the Supervised Teaching Practice, integrated in the Master's course in Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education at the Higher School of Education of Viana do Castelo. In this document, the two educational contexts of the Supervised Teaching Practice and the corresponding educational intervention paths are described. An exploratory study with research-action characteristics is also presented, which sought to analyse the impact of an improvement plan that aimed to enhance the quality of the educational context as a promoter of an effective motor culture in a kindergarten in Viana do Castelo. For this purpose, a structured observation of the daily routine of the kindergarten activities room was carried out, composed of twenty-two children, an educator, two trainee educators and an educational assistant, through the evaluation instrument Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation (EPAO; Ward et al. 2008). This observation was made before and after the implementation of the improvement plan. In global terms, we can conclude that the changes made in terms of physical space and in terms of educational routines/practices were significant in increasing the quality of kindergarten as a context that enhances physical activity. Progress was made in all dimensions of the EPAO, except in the dimension of physical activity training/education and in the dimension of physical activity policies. The most significant improvements were registered in terms of the staff behavior and in terms of active opportunities. This study contributed to a greater awareness of the pedagogical team about the importance of physical activity and the path to pursue for the existence of a true and comprehensive motor culture based on the principle of an active school for all

    An introduction to meta-regression analysis

    No full text
We present and describe the main available meta-regression models for the purpose of the complementation of systematic reviews of the literature, synthetization of quantitative results and explanation of the variability among those results. We review the literature available, which, starting from the description of the models mentioned above, goes through the presentation of their specificities in the context of empirical research in the social sciences, and culminates in the discussion of their main limitations. We demonstrate that meta-regression analysis is a methodological framework that allows modeling and correcting problems of publication bias while explaining the variability of results usually found in the literature in the social sciences. In a succinct but rigorous way, we give precise indications for the practical implementation of this analytical expedient in the context of social sciences, notably economics, management, and finance, among others. © 2022 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to understand the factors influencing business tourism on a global scale, in order to assess the competence of the countries in this tourism segment and prescribe them guidelines for action. For the development of data analysis, a growth rate model was estimated and a sample of 136 countries for the years 2005 and 2009 was collected. Results reveal that, for the development of policies to stimulate the growth in the business tourism segment, countries should develop measures that encourage capital investment in tourism, leisure tourism and trade openness. Economic agents should also focus their investments in equipment that creates value throughout the tourism supply chain, in particular, in transport and equipment for entertainment and culture.8316-FD77-85EB | Pedro Miguel Fonseca Moreira de Carvalhoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The relationship between motor competence and health-related fitness in children and adolescents

    Get PDF
Background and aims In the last twenty years, there has been increasing evidence that Motor Competence (MC) is vital for developing an active and healthy lifestyle. This study analyses the associations between motor competence and its components, with health-related fitness (HRF). Methods A random sample of 546 children (278 males, mean = 10.77 years) divided into four age groups (7–8; 9–10; 11–12; 13–14 years old) was evaluated. A quantitative MC instrument (evaluating stability, locomotor and manipulative skills), a maximal multistage 20-m shuttle-run test and the handgrip test, height and BMI were used in the analyses. Pearson correlations and standard regression modelling were performed to explore the associations between variables. Results Moderate to strong significant correlations (0.49 < r < 0.73) were found between MC and HRF, for both sexes, and correlation values were stable across the age groups. The MC model explained 74% of the HRF variance, with the locomotor component being the highest predictor for the entire sample (β = .302; p < .001). Gender-related differences were found when boys and girls were analysed at each age group. Locomotor MC for girls was the most consistent significant predictor of HRF across all age groups (0.47 < β < 0.65; all p .001). For boys, significant predictors were locomotor and manipulative MC (0.21 < β < 0.49; all p < .05) in the two younger age groups (7–8 and 9–10 years) and stability (0.50 < β < 0.54; all p .001) for the older two age groups (11–12 and 13–14 years). Conclusion These results support the idea that: (1) the relationship between overall MC and HRF is strong and stable across childhood and early adolescence; (2) when accounting for the different MC components, boys and girls show different relationship patterns with HFR across age.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo Rodriguesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Improvement of RSSI-Based LoRaWAN localization using Edge-AI

    No full text
Localization is an essential element of the Internet of Things (IoT) leading to meaningful data and more effective services. Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is a low-power communications protocol specifically designed for the IoT ecosystem. In this protocol, the RF signals used to communicate between IoT end devices and a LoRaWAN gateway (GW) can be used for communication and localization simultaneously, using distinct approaches, such as Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) or Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA). Typically, in a LoRaWAN network, different GWs are deployed in a wide area at distinct locations, contributing to different error sources as they experience a specific network geometry and particular environmental effects. Therefore, to improve the location estimation accuracy, the weather effect on each GW can be learned and evaluated separately to improve RSSI-based distance and location estimation. This work proposes an RSSI-based LoRaWAN location estimation method based on Edge-AI techniques, namely an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that will be running at each GW to learn and reduce weather effects on estimated distance. Results have shown that the proposed method can effectively improve the RSSIbased distance estimation accuracy between 6% and 49%, and therefore reduce the impact of the environmental changes in different GWs. This leads to a location estimation improvement of approximately 101 m.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/

The use of ARM-assembly language and a Raspberry PI 1 B+ as a server to improve computer architecture skills

    Get PDF
Prompting students’ interest and engagement in learning environments is crucial to achieve the best results. Academia and educators in general are constantly adapting materials and methodologies in order to maximise the acquisition of contents by their students. In this case-study, a new teaching/learning methodology is presented and evaluated through a final questionnaire survey. This case-study aims to understand students’ efficiency and motivation levels regarding a new teaching/learning methodology adopted in the second module of a Computer Systems and Architectures course attended by first-year Computer Sciences undergraduates. The new teaching/learning methodology relies on a specific programming language - ARMv6 assembly - to improve student's efficiency levels, and an innovative always-visible in-class mobile test scenario, implemented through a low-cost computing platform - Raspberry Pi 1 B+ - as a server, mimicking as much as possible a real-life environment, so that students believe they are working on real hardware, thus enhancing their motivation levels. The results of the questionnaire survey allowed to infer that the use of a specific programming language, such as ARMv6 assembly, coupled with a new always-visible in-class mobile test scenario were in fact efficient in raising the levels of motivation among Computer Sciences students and, consequently, improved their skills in Computer Architecture.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/

An advertising overflow attack against android exposure notification system impacting COVID-19 contact tracing applications

    Get PDF
The digital contact tracing applications are one of the many initiatives to fight the COVID-19 virus. Some of these Apps use the Exposure Notification (EN) system available on Google and Apple’s operating systems. However, EN-based contact tracing Apps depend on the availability of Bluetooth interfaces to exchange proximity identifiers, which, if compromised, directly impact their effectiveness. This paper discloses and details the Advertising Overflow attack, a novel internal Denial of Service (DoS) attack targeting the EN system on Android devices. The attack is performed by a malicious App that occupies all the Bluetooth advertising slots in an Android device, effectively blocking any advertising attempt of EN or other Apps. The impact of the disclosed attack and other previously disclosed DoS-based attacks, namely Battery Exhaustion and Storage Drain, were tested using two target smartphones and other six smartphones as attackers. The results show that the Battery Exhaustion attack imposes a battery discharge rate 1.95 times higher than in the normal operation scenario. Regarding the Storage Drain, the storage usage increased more than 30 times when compared to the normal operation scenario results. The results of the novel attack reveal that a malicious App can prevent any other App to place their Bluetooth advertisements, for any chosen time period, thus canceling the operation of the EN system and compromising the efficiency of any COVID contact tracing App using this system.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/

Accessible surf destinations : the case of Viana do Castelo, Portugal

    No full text
In recent years, there has been a growth in the travel of people with disabilities (PwD), which has led to an increase in demand for an accessible environment (infrastructure, transport, and services), and, thus, a growing recognition of the value of the accessible tourism segment. This study aims to explore the accessibility of the supply structures in a tourist destination through the analysis of the first European Adaptive Surfing Championship, held in the city of Viana do Castelo, in littoral northwest of Portugal. This study adopted a case-study approach by combining exploratory semi-structured interviews, direct observation (employing visual methods—photography), and face-to-face questionnaires applied to adaptive surf athletes. The case-study results showed that despite the efforts implemented by the adaptive event organizers, some constraints remained in the supply structures of the hosting seaside destination of Viana do Caste-lo. Particularly built infrastructures displayed some physical accessibility barriers in the parking lots and the absence of automatic and lifting equipments. By inquiring adaptive surf athletes and their technical teams, and despite overall satisfaction with the event, attributes such as walkways and information in accessible format were predominantly less satisfactory. The study presents managerial implications for the improvement of accessible nautical tourism destinations.8014-1B5A-933A | Goretti SilvaN/

Diet and physical activity as a universal foundation for child development and lifelong health

    Get PDF
There is strong evidence that good nutrition and regular physical activity reduce the risk of several short-term health problems like anaemia or obesity, while also preventing long-term diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis or cardiovascular diseases. It is important, however, to analyse this relationship under a holistic approach to the concept of health, which goes far beyond dis-ease prevention and comprises well-being. From this perspective, health can be seen as the condition that allows the individual to express his full potential as a human being, considering its interdependent dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial and environmen-tal. A healthy lifestyle, including not only diet and physical activity, but also sleeping patterns, as well as other factors that have influence on mental and social well-being, is crucial for an optimal child development. The present analysis focuses on children ́s diet and physical activity as key determinants of health under a life-course approach. We discuss the early origins of health and disease, along with factors associated with the “building” of diet and physical activity habits that set the foundations for lifelong health.0113-B5A0-70B0 | Raquel Beatriz Leitãoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
