non-linear relationships in children 6-10 years
Background: Given the concern for health‐related consequences of an elevated body mass index (BMI; obesity), the potential consequences of a low BMI in children are often overlooked.
The purpose was to evaluate the relationship between the BMI across its entire spectrum and motor coordination (MC) in children 6–10 years.
Methods: Height, weight, and MC (Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder, KTK test battery) were measured in 1,912 boys and 1,826 girls of 6–10 years of age. BMI (kg/m2) was calculated.
KTK scores for each of the four tests were also converted to a motor quotient (MQ). One‐way ANOVA was used to test differences in the BMI, individual test items, and MQ among boys and girls within age groups. Sex‐specific quadratic regressions of individual KTK items and the MQ on the BMI were calculated. Girls and boys were also classified into four weight status groups using International Obesity Task Force criteria: thin, normal, overweight, and obese.
Differences in specific test items and MQ between weight status groups were evaluated by age group in each sex.
Results: Thirty‐one percent of the sample was overweight or obese, whereas 5% was thin. On average, normal weight children had the highest MQ in both sexes across the age range with few exceptions. Overweight/obese children had a lower MQ than normal weight and thin children.
The quadratic regression lines generally presented an inverted parabolic relationship between the BMI and MC and suggested a decrease in MC with an increase in the BMI.
Conclusion: In general, BMI shows a curvilinear, inverted parabolic relationship with MC in children 6–10 years.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo Rodriguesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Examining differential trajectories of engagement over the transition to secondary school: the role of perceived control
The present study was particularly interested in identifying resilient trajectories of engagement, and analyzing their association withstudent’s motivation, specifically, their perceived control. In alongitudinal study following 391 students across three measurementpoints, encompassing the transition from 9th to 10th grade (from basic to secondary school), students’ beliefs (control, effortcapacity, and ability capacity beliefs), engagement, and academic achievement were assessed. Consistentwith previous research, anoverall decline in levels of engagement was found over this time, associated with perceived control. To uncover alternative pathways, latent class growth analysis was used, and three groups of students were identified based on their distinct engagement trajectories:(1) students whose engagement started high but decreased (high-decreasing engagement), (2) students who started at average levels anddeclined (average-decreasing engagement), and (3) students whose engagement started low but then increased (low-increasingengagement). Comparison of the three groups demonstrated that control beliefs play a critical role in reducing the normative rate ofdecline in engagement. The recovery trajectory (low-increasing engagement), which is of particular interest, showed smaller declines incontrol beliefs. Findings also suggest that effort capacity beliefs seem to protect engagement in the face of the challenges this group oflower performing students are likely to encounter. The emergence of the three distinct engagement groups is of special interest as itshows positive, counter-normative changes in engagement trajectories. The observed changes in engagement, motivation, andachievement of the potentially at-risk students (low-increasing engagement group) suggest that these students may be especiallysensitive to a supportive and engaging academic environment.8C1E-AFB9-6BE1 | Maria Teresa Martins GonçalvesN/
Kit “Energy, Environment and Sustainability”: An educational strategy for a sustainable future. A case study for Guinea-Bissau
Increasing the scientific knowledge of the population through education is a developmentstrategy towards a sustainable future. However, there is no equity in the access to science educationand scientific knowledge. The aim of this paper is to present and analyse a science kit named “Energy,Environment and Sustainability” (KEAS). Based on research conducted in Guinea-Bissau, it exploresstrategies to promote science education for a sustainable future. The strengths and limitations ofthe KEAS were studied using different data collection methods, including interviews, observation, survey, focus groups and document analysis. The participants were teacher trainers from the Guinea-Bissau School of Education. It is concluded that the KEAS is a feasible and suitable teaching strategyappropriate to the context, having the potential to contribute to learning about the environment andsustainability. Further, it addresses real problems for which students should acquire knowledge andskills in order to be able to make informed choices.C917-B3FD-1A62 | Maria Luísa Vieira das Nevesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Siblings' influence on the motor competence of preschoolers
The number of single-child families has been rising steadily in recent years, resulting in a childhood absent of sibling relationships. Being an only child has been shown to have a negative impact on physical fitness, somatic fitness, and motor development. In this study, we aimed to understand how living with and without siblings can impact the motor competence of children. One hundred and sixty-one children (87 boys, 74 girls) from 3.0 to 6.0 years of age (34 only children,125 siblings) and with no known motor or cognitive disability were assessed using the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA). Their standardized results on the three MCA subscales (stability, locomotor, and manipulative) and total MCA were used to group them into high, average, and low motor competence groups. Motor competence percentile distribution of the sibling and only child group condition was compared using chi-square tests. Results showed a significative and positive association between the sibling condition and the distribution between the three MC groups (chi-square = 6.29; p = 0.043), showing that children in a household with siblings, independent of their age and sex, show a clear tendency for developing better motor competence.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo RodriguesN/
Cross-cultural comparisons of motor competence in southern brazilian and portuguese schoolchildren
Aim: This study aimed to compare the MC levels of Brazilian and Portuguese schoolchildren from 4 to
11 years. Methods: One hundred and forty-eight Brazilian children were evaluated using the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) instrument and were later compared to the existent normative values of Portuguese children for a similar age range. Results: Our findings showed that MC increased with age, and boys outperformed girls, especially in the older age group. The distribution of the Brazilian children showed that while Brazilian boys perform above Portuguese normative values in 4 of the 6 tasks of the MCA, Brazilian girls perform below those values in all tasks, except for the standing long jump. Conclusion: The differences found, especially in girls, may be related to differences in the Physical Education curricula and how school recess periods are used.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo RodriguesN/
Tourism is one of the most important industries worldwide and in Portugal. One of its main products is Nature Tourism, present in the figure of one of its most privileged spaces, the Protected Areas.
This report is the result of an internship integrated into the conclusion of the 2nd year of the Master in Tourism, Innovation and Development at IPVC, whose host entity was the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF). It was intended to analyze Nature Tourism (Outdoor) in the North region, namely in the Protected Areas existing at the top of the country.
Audience segmentation and communicating towards a music festival - the NOS Primavera Sound
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the main communication channels to promote a music festival. Music festivals are one of the central drivers for the promotion of cultural tourism and are highly significant for local economies.
Understanding the main marketing communication channels, and the most effective way to reach different segments of public, is an essential feature for festival management. To explore this theme, data were collected during the 2018 edition of the NOS Primavera Sound music festival, and then analysed through non-parametric tests. The methodology used was based on audience segmentation considering sociodemographic characteristics and participation engagement. Thus, this paper aims to contribute to this field of research identifying the diverse potential communication channels across different segments of music festival audiences, contemplating also their motivation and global satisfaction levels with the event.B913-0565-0908 | Elvira Vieirainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Exploring the potential of the outdoors with digital technology in teacher education
This paper refers to a study that aims to understand the perceptions of pre-service teachers about the use of digital technology in outdoor mathematics. We followed a qualitative, interpretative approach and collected data through participant observation, questionnaires and photographic records. The participants were forty-eight pre-service teachers, that were enrolled in a Didactics of Mathematics unit course, and they used the MathCityMap app to do a math trail in the city of Viana do Castelo. Results show that they valued the experience, having the possibility to solve realistic problems, developing cooperative work, critical thinking and establishing mathematical connections. They found the app to be user friendly and motivating, mentioning its contribution for students’ engagement through active learning, spatial orientation, autonomy and being more interactive than the paper version. As for limitations, the participants highlighted the possible lack of access to Wi-Fi; the fact that students of younger ages normally do not have smartphones; and, in terms of the tasks, the limitation of the answer formats to either a value or multiple choice.0D1E-4824-1244 | Ana Cristina Coelho Barbosainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
