Lettuce growth and nutrient uptake response to winery waste compost and biochar

    Get PDF
The composting process of winery wastewater sludge with grape stalks enables these wastes to be recycled as soil organic amendments or pot substrate components. However, it is necessary to assess the potential of this compost as crop fertilizer. This assessment is also needed for the use of biochar as soil amendment because negative effects on crop growth and nutrient uptake may occur depending on application rates and biochar physical and chemical characteristics. With this aim, a randomized block design pot experiment with lettuce was set up with four treatments including: (i) 5% (w/w) of winery waste compost; (ii) 4% (w/w) biochar (commercial charcoal); (iii) 5% (w/w) winery waste compost with 4% (w/w) biochar; and (iv) a control treatment without soil amendments (T0). Lettuce shoot yield increased 13% with compost application but decreased 18% with biochar in comparison to T0 and 25% with compost and biochar compared to compost alone. Similarly, lettuce root weight increased with compost, but not with biochar. Lettuce shoot dry matter (DM), N and Ca contents clearly increased with compost application compared to lettuce grown in the treatment with biochar. The same happened for root Ca and Mg contents. The lowest P and K contents of lettuce shoots and roots were recorded in T0. However, lettuce root N content decreased with biochar compared to T0. Therefore, root and shoot growth and nutrient uptake decreased with soil application of 4% (w/w) of biochar whereas the winery waste compost showed positive effects as soil fertilizer.6B1D-516F-1A2A | Luís Miguel Cortez Mesquita de BritoN/

    Get PDF
This study aimed to: (i) analyze fat mass and physical fitness variations among age-groups and playing positions, and (ii) explore the relationship between fat mass and physical fitness in youth male soccer players. A total of 66 players from under-16, under-17, and under-19 were tested. Body mass, skinfolds, countermovement jump (CMJ), single-leg triple hop jump (SLTH), bilateral triple hop jump (BTH), and yo-yo intermittent recovery Level 2 (YYIR-2) were assessed. A two- and one-way ANOVA were conducted, and the effect size was measured. Interactions were found in skin folds and fat mass. The under-19 group was taller, heavier, with a greater BMI and muscle mass than the under-16 group. They also exceeded the under-16 and under-17 in SLTH, BTH, and YYIRT-2. The under-17 group jumped higher and longer than under-16 group. Goalkeepers were taller and heavier than the midfielders. Central defenders were taller and had more muscle mass than midfielders and were heavier than the midfielders and wingers. The wingers jumped higher than the midfielders and showed better YYIRT-2. BMI was small correlated with YYIRT-2 and moderately with CMJ. Fat mass had a moderate negative correlation with CMJ and YYIRT-2. Muscle mass largely correlated with CMJ, UTH, very large with BTH and moderate with YYIRT-2. Summarily, with increasing age, better performances and body compositions were registered. Muscle mass better influences performance than body fat. Body composition can distinguish players positions.D915-7373-ED16 | Cesar LeaoN/

    Get PDF
Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects 1 in every 300 people worldwide. This study intended to perform a systematic review to describe the state-of-the-art of interventions involving patients with negative symptoms of schizophrenia that use Virtual Reality (VR) games as a complement to therapy, and to analyze the key features of such games. Literature research was conducted in three databases, namely, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Scopus, and PubMed, to identify relevant publications dated from 2010 to 2021. Of the initial 74 publications found, only 11 satisfied the eligibility requirements and were included in this study. The results were then organized and displayed in a flow diagram. Overall, the results from the studies suggest that the use of VR in therapies enables an increase in social skills and a decrease in anxiety symptoms. The use of such technology in therapy has proven to be effective, although it still lacks features to provide better long-term results.2411-78B2-7CDB | Pedro Miguel MoreiraN/

The effects of COVID-19 lockdown on the perception of physical activity and on the perception of musculoskeletal symptoms in computer workers: comparative longitudinal study design

    Get PDF
Lockdown resulting from the pandemic led to a change in the health habits of the computer workers community. Sedentary work, together with less active lifestyles, aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic leads to impacts on physical activity (PA) and can contribute to the development of musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS). Aim(s): Understand the effects of lockdown on the perception of physical activity levels and on the perception of frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms, over periods of 12 months and 7 days, in computer workers. Methods: Longitudinal comparative study between 2019 (M1) and 2021 (M2), over 18 months, in 40 volunteer participants. The inclusion criteria were full-time workers aged between 18 and 65 and the exclusion criteria included diagnosis of non-work-related medical conditions. In addition to a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ) was used to evaluate the MSS and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), was used to analyse the perception of the level of PA. These questionnaires were used in two assessment stages (M1 and M2). McNemar test and Wilcoxon paired test were used to evaluate the effect of lockdown on the perception of PA, and on the perception of frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms. Results: The MSS prevalence in the previous 12 months increased significantly in the neck (M1: 45.0%, M2: 62.5%, p = 0.046), in the shoulders (M1: 37.5%, M2: 55.0%, p = 0.033), and in the hands/wrists (M1: 25.0%, M2: 45.0%, p = 0.019). The mean pain score increased in the shoulders (1.43 ± 2.24, 2.35 ± 2.55, p = 0.003) and in the elbows (0.18 ± 0.59, 0.60 ± 1.34, p = 0.015). No differences were found in the PA between M1 and M2, but the weekly mean sitting time increased from 4.75 ± 2.26 to 6.26 ± 2.65 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: After 18 months it became clear that MSS perception increased mainly in the neck, shoulders and hands/wrists with a significant increase in pain intensity in the shoulder and elbow regions. The weekly sitting time increased significantly. Further studies are needed in order to determine the impact of teleworking in a pandemic context. But multifactor behind these results should be taken into account by health institutions and those responsible for the Prevention of Occupational Risks in Computer Workers in order to adopt educational strategies for the promotion of Physical activity (PA), in these workers.DA10-CEBF-4D75 | Maria Salomé Martins FerreiraN/

Perceived changes in well-being and happiness with gardening in urban organic allotments in Portugal

    Get PDF
Urban allotment gardens (AG) in Portugal have increased in recent years, as in many other European countries and worldwide. The contribution of these gardens to the happiness and well-being of urban populations has been recognized, but evaluations of their benefits are still very scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate this contribution, based on the urban organic AG of the Devesa Park in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal. The sample included 65 gardeners who completed the self-administered questionnaires of Bem-Estar Pessoal (personal well-being scale), Felicidade Subjetiva (subjective happiness scale) and sociodemographic characteristics. Respondents were mainly adults under 65 years, married and academically well qualified and about half of them had a professional activity, with nearly one third being retired. They considered themselves happy with their life (Personal Wellbeing Index = 74.5%) and revealed an optimistic and positive attitude towards life, regardless of economic or social difficulties. The increased frequency of visits for gardening was positively related to a greater perception of subjective happiness. The gardeners who visited the AG more frequently considered themselves happier from a self-perspective and in comparison with peers. It can be suggested that urban organic AG represent a means for enhancing citizen well-being, contributing positively to their feelings of happiness and life satisfaction, changing behaviours and developing personal capacities. Beyond economic measures, urban AG can be recommended to capture the well-being of societies.6B1D-516F-1A2A | Luís Miguel Cortez Mesquita de BritoN/

With this work, intends to contribute to Portuguese perioperative Nursing, with a resource instrument in the systematization of the decision-making process of professionals for the approach to the surgical patient, more precisely in the management of the risk of developing PU in the perioperative environment, aiming at the prevention or minimization of the same, with great incidence in this context. The use of this scale will allow professionals to recognize sick people at high risk of developing lesions, who need differentiated care during anesthetic-surgical procedures so that, through this assessment, they can implement preventive interventions for the development of lesions or other complications inherent to the surgical procedure, in the sense of promoting and improving the quality of care, which will translate into health gains. From the internship experience, the preponderant role of the nurse specialist in medical-surgical care in the Operating Room in promoting training/learning in the team and differentiated management of nursing care, aiming at the continuous improvement of its quality. From an individual point of view, the opportunity to develop differentiated professional learning stands out, raising awareness of the importance of practice based on critical thinking, supported by the best and most current scientific evidence, in a continuum of lifelong learning and in the valorization of profession

Capacitação do cuidador informal da pessoa dependente no domicílio, no autocuidado transferir-se

    Get PDF
The advancement of knowledge in the area of health over time has contributed to the increase in average life expectancy, according to Ribeiro (2013), the increase in the elderly population, accompanied by the development and worsening of chronic diseases, present themselves as determinants for the increase in the number of people with a high degree of dependence and, therefore, dependent on third parties in their family context and usual way of life. The inevitable association of these two factors implies the growing need for care in this type of population, which consequently enhances the need for informal caregivers, whose role in most situations is assumed by the family caregiver (MARTINS et al, 2014). In this sense, the need for investment in the area of home care arose, since its objective is to provide the highest possible quality of life to the patient/family/informal caregiver, nothing seems more important than the training of the C.I. in aspects as simple as self-care, but at the same time as physically demanding as self-care transferring oneself, the prevention of complications inherent to the immobility of the dependent person, as well as the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries of the caregiver, being crucial for a care of good quality. In this sense, and inserted in the development of the Professional Nature stage, the present research emerged, which was a study on the training of the informal caregiver of the dependent person at home in the self-care transference, whose general objective is to train the Informal Caregiver to care of the dependent person within the scope of self-care to transfer. And as specific objectives, the following were defined: • Identify what knowledge informal caregivers of dependent people at home have about immobility complications; • Knowing the difficulties of informal caregivers regarding placements/mobilizations; • Identify weaknesses and training needs of informal caregivers; • Carrying out formal and informal training actions at home, according to the training weaknesses of informal caregivers; • Understand the reasons that lead informal caregivers to non-adherence to the uprisings of their dependents. The methods used for data collection were direct observation in the internship field, interviews with caregivers of dependent people at home. This study aimed to contribute to the prevention of complications inherent to the immobility of dependent people and to contribute to the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in caregivers of dependent people. With this present study, it was possible to show that most C.I.'s are women, daughters of dependents and experiencing a situation of unemployment. They were not trained to perform this task of caring and many developed this ability by watching others do it, or empirically. Most caregivers do not feel capable of mobilizing their dependent on their own and therefore adopt vicious positions to do so, developing SCI. The method used in this research was the action investigation in which the researcher corrected/acted on the C.I. during its research enabling the C.I. in self-care transfer. It was a qualitative investigation, in which the researcher, after gathering data on the reality of the C.I.'s and identifying their needs, developed a training action in order to train the Informal Caregiver, leaving support material such as the Caregiver's manual, pamphlets and multimedia material (video) technical support material for this purpose. Finally, it was found that due to the existing gaps in terms of this problem, it makes perfect sense to create intervention programs to support the prevention of immobility complications, the development of studies that generate intervention models and that aim to promote self-care transfer and the training of the C.I., as well as the support and remuneration of the C.I.'s, as they see their task as a social imposition, castrating all their financial and social development, making caring for their dependents regretful

Personal and social factors influencing students' attitudes towards peers with special needs

Within inclusive education, it is crucial to consider how students with special needs are valued as members of school community and may fully and actively take part in school-life. The present study aims: 1) to assess students' attitudes towards peers with special needs; 2) to understand how personal factors (age, gender, school achievement and social competence) and social factors (contacting with persons or family member with SN) predict students' attitudes variation. Participants were 200 Portuguese students from 6th to 12th grade. Instruments were administered during class: (i) CATCH (Rosenbaum, Armstrong & King, 1986), comprising a cognitive and an affective-behavior subscale (ii) Social goals Scale (Wentzel, 1993), comprising a social responsibility and a prosocial subscale. We conducted exploratory factor analysis on CATCH and stepwise regression analysis using attitudes as dependent variable. Affective-behavior attitudes were higher in girls and in students with contact with special needs peers and showed moderate correlations with social competence; Cognitive attitudes were higher in older students and were not related with social competence. Prosocial goals were the best predictor of attitudes towards peers with special needs. Results showed that attitudes towards peers with special needs may be influenced by personal and contextual factors. Confirming other findings girls showed more positive attitudes. Also students who have contact with peers with special needs have more positive attitudes, evidencing the potential impact of inclusive settings. The relation found between attitudes and social motivation (mainly prosocial goals) has implications for educational intervention.8C1E-AFB9-6BE1 | Maria Teresa Martins GonçalvesN/

Reproductive consequences of electrolyte disturbances in domestic animals

    Get PDF
Electrolyte balance is essential to maintain homeostasis in the body. The most crucial electrolytes are sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl−), and calcium (Ca2+). These ions maintain the volume of body fluids, and blood pressure, participate in muscle contractions, and nerve conduction, and are important in enzymatic reactions. The balance is mainly ensured by the kidneys, which are an important organ that regulates the volume and composition of urine, together with which excess electrolytes are excreted. They are also important in the reproductive system, where they play a key role. In the male reproductive system, electrolytes are important in acrosomal reaction and sperm motility. Sodium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride are related to sperm capacitation. Moreover, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Na+ play a key role in spermatogenesis and the maintenance of morphologically normal spermatozoa. Infertility problems are becoming more common. It is known that disturbances in the electrolyte balance lead to reproductive dysfunction. In men, there is a decrease in sperm motility, loss of sperm capacitation, and male infertility. In the female reproductive system, sodium is associated with estrogen synthesis. In the contraction and relaxation of the uterus, there is sodium, potassium, and calcium. Calcium is associated with oocyte activation. In turn, in women, changes in the composition of the follicular fluid are observed, leading to a restriction of follicular growth. Imbalance of oocyte electrolytes, resulting in a lack of oocyte activation and, consequently, infertility.FE1B-06B2-126F | José Pedro Pinto de AraújoN/
