Patterns: a creative approach to learning in different areas/domains of pre-school education
Crowdfunding as entrepreneurial funding for investigative journalism in Portugal
The 2007 financial and economic subprime crisis arising from the collapse of the Lehman Brothers Bank in the USAhad severe impacts on all the economic sectors. Journalism in Portugal was highly affected, and the most remarkable impacts led to editorial budget cuts. These cuts led to a drastic decrease in human resources in newsrooms, leading to a consequent breach of investigative journalism. These aspects resulted in a surge in unemployment for many experienced journalists, a decrease in the quality of information, and the consequent impoverishment and reduction of research journalism, with losses for the entire Portuguese society. Considering this context there is the need to explore alternative sources of funding for research journalism. Crowdfunding has been portrayed as an alternative to traditional models of financing research journalism, capable of generating a new dynamic, to provide for a more skilled and informed society. The main goal of this paper is to analyze crowdfunding as a tool to fund Portuguese investigative journalism. The methods include a narrative literature review on the causes, impacts, and consequences of the decrease in Portuguese investigative journalism and a case study methodology focused on the Portuguese platform of journalism crowdfunding ‘I Fund News’. In addition, qualitative research was applied to analyze the curricula of Portuguese journalism degrees with minors in entrepreneurship, business, and economics. The results show that the number of ECTS courses in entrepreneurship, business, and economics in journalism and communication degrees is very low in the Portuguese higher education sector. A relationship between entrepreneurship, business, economics, and the capacity for journalists to readapt and find the necessary funding sources is established. These results may be of interest to Portuguese police makers and higher education stakeholders, to promote the development of study programs with increased entrepreneurship, business, and economics courses. More literate journalists in the referred subjects may enhance their entrepreneurial potential and, consequently, their freelance potentialto develop investigative journalism projects
SICAP - Cadastral information and property management system
Background. Aging is one of the most relevant phenomena of the 21st century. As we age, life
paths differ from one another due to the intersection of several factors, whether individual
(biological, psychological) or collective (social and cultural), due to the interaction of these factors
or even the coexistence of normative and non-normative life events distributed throughout the life
cycle/course. On a global scale we live more years, but quality of life and well-being is not
guaranteed for the entire population. The "life-course" and "life-span" theories share a central
assumption - aging is a dynamic and progressive process throughout life, closely linked to
biological, psychological, and social factors (Litvoc & Brito, 2004). In recent decades we have
seen in gerontology and social gerontology a positive view of aging and the last stages of the life
cycle. The WHO argues that aging should be lived in a positive and active way, minimizing losses,
and maximizing gains throughout this process, proposing the concept of active aging and, more
recently, healthy aging. In the late twentieth century, researchers from different disciplinary areas
presented several proposals oriented towards a positive view of aging, where we highlight the
successful aging models. These proposals have in common a multidimensional view of
successful aging, highlighting processes, outcomes, or both. To promote positive aging, it is
important to develop effective and innovative preventive and optimizing interventions focused on
the person and/or the community.
Objectives of the study: (1) to identify trends in research associated with community-based
studies (empirical studies), namely in terms of functioning, mental status, and social networks; (2)
to characterize interventions oriented towards active, healthy and/or successful aging in specific
territorial areas.
Method. The present study was developed in two stages: (1) research of dissertations from the
master’s degree in Social Gerontology, having defined for this purpose keywords and inclusion
and exclusion criteria; (2) based on the identified studies, we sought to characterize the
projects/programs in terms of Public Policies at the local level.
Results. From the 11 empirical studies, it was observed that predominantly women (range
between 53% and 76.7%), elderly (mean age varies between 74.1 years and 78.2 years) and low
level of education (range between 2.8 and 4.1 years). Regarding the domains of individual
functioning, a wide range was observed: (a) functionality - moderate dependence predominates
(between 20% and 70.1%); (b) cognitive performance, cognitive deficit is observed between
13.1% and 37.5%; (c) risk of social isolation - between 1.4% and 30.7%. As for the intervention
associated with Public Policies at the local level it is observed that the programs/projects
associated with physical activity, social-recreational activities, and other activities (e.g., activities
of the cognitive sphere/learning in specific domains) predominate.
Conclusion. Given the breadth of the results obtained in this study associated with gerontological
assessment and intervention, it is necessary to continue studies in this area in order to broaden
the evidence base for gerontological practice
a living systematic review
Background: Hamstrings injuries are common in sports and the reinjury risk is high. Despite the extensive literature on hamstrings injuries, the efectiveness of the diferent conservative (i.e., non-surgical) interventions (i.e., modalities and doses) for the rehabilitation of athletes with acute hamstrings injuries is unclear.
Objective: We aimed to compare the efects of diferent conservative interventions in time to return to sport (TRTS) and/or time to return to full training (TRFT) and reinjury-related outcomes after acute hamstrings injuries in athletes. Data Sources: We searched CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases up to 1 January, 2022, complemented with manual searches, prospective citation tracking, and consultation of external experts. Eligibility Criteria: the eligibility criteria were multi-arm studies (randomized and non-randomized) that compared conservative treatments of acute hamstrings injuries in athletes. Data Analysis: We summarized the characteristics of included studies and conservative interventions and analyzed data for main outcomes (TRTS, TRFT, and rate of reinjuries). The risk of bias was judged using the Cochrane tools. Quality and completeness of reporting of therapeutic exercise programs were appraised with the i-CONTENT tool and the certainty of evidence was judged using the GRADE framework. TRTS and TRFT were analyzed using mean diferences and the risk of reinjury with relative risks.
Results Fourteen studies (12 randomized and two non-randomized) comprising 730 athletes (mostly men with ages between 14 and 49 years) from diferent sports were included. Nine randomized studies were judged at high risk and three at low risk of bias, and the two non-randomized studies were judged at critical risk of bias. Seven randomized studies compared exercise-based interventions (e.g., L-protocol vs C-protocol), one randomized study compared the use of low-level laser therapy, and three randomized and two non-randomized studies compared injections of platelet-rich plasma to placebo or no injection. These low-level laser therapy and platelet-rich plasma studies complemented their interventions with an exercise program. Only three studies were judged at low overall risk of inefectiveness (i-CONTENT). No single intervention or combination of interventions proved superior in achieving a faster TRTS/TRFT or reducing the risk of reinjury. Only eccentric lengthening exercises showed limited evidence in allowing a shorter TRFT. The platelet-rich plasma treatment did not consistently reduce the TRFT or have any efect on the risk of new hamstrings injuries. The certainty of evidence was very low for all outcomes and comparisons.
Conclusions: Available evidence precludes the prioritization of a particular exercise-based intervention for athletes with acute hamstrings injuries, as diferent exercise-based interventions showed comparable efects on TRTS/TRFT and the risk of reinjuries. Available evidence also does not support the use of platelet-rich plasma or low-level laser therapy in clinical practice. The currently available literature is limited because of the risk of bias, risk of inefectiveness of exercise protocols (as assessed with the i-CONTENT), and the lack of comparability across existing studies. Assessing cybersecurity at an industrial unit 4.0
Mestrado em Cibersegurança na Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do CasteloThe last 20 years have emerged significant developments in industrial production and development, with new technologies, networks and emerging production systems due to the development of the internet and new distributed adaptive production systems. These architectures resulted in improved service activities, new business models and increased demand and offering of goods, resulting in fewer interactions among production system participants. The convergence of IT/OT environments has increased the complexity and vulnerability of previously isolated OT/ICS networks, and the growing need to expand automation in the industry creates a big challenge in terms of cybersecurity. In this context, how can we identify suspicious activity, assess risks and help prevent downtime in an increasingly
technological industry? For this thesis, data collected through an online survey on the subject of convergence in the national industry was analyzed in order to know if this subject, from the perspective
of professionals, deserves the attention of the organizations where they develop their professional activity with technologies of IT/OT. A set of real cases and the consequences of serious security failures that occurred in the period between 2021 and 2023, increasingly common, with an impact on the global industry, are identified and analyzed. The technological complexity that results from the convergence between information technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) is analyzed, highlighting in practice the challenges for which cybersecurity has to prepare itself in order to develop effective and
context-adjusted responses under review. The biggest challenge lies in the cyber-secure integration of data-centric computing technologies in the IT systems with the monitoring of events, processes and devices in the OT systems. After analyzing the complexity of the IT/OT technologies essential for Industry 4.0, we recommend a careful reading of the set of frameworks described in this document about internationally recognized good practices in cybersecurity. Regular access to public databases, described in this document, on risk patterns and fundamental vulnerabilities is recommended for the development of an updated cybersecurity strategy. Finally, good practices are described to analyze, frame and apply to avoid risk situations by monitoring the trend of cybersecurity incidents, known software flaws, as well as vulnerabilities and associated risks, which can result in ransomware and its associated consequences.
Smart contract and web dapp for tracing sustainability indicators in the textile and clothing value chain
In today’s society, Textile and Clothing (T&C) is one of the biggest market sectors world wide. The sheer size and fast growth of this industry is having unprecedented impacts on sustainability, accounting for negative environmental, social and health consequences. The fast-fashion trends along side the lack of transparency in the global T&C value chain add up to unfavorable scenarios for the world as the increas-
ing levels of pollution and resource consumption within the value chain reach historic highs with every year that passes. The lifecycle of a clothing item needs to adapt to a regenerative economic model instead of a linear one that ends up in the equivalent of a garbage truck full of textiles being disposed into a landfill every second [1]. Not only do the industries need to revamp their processes to circularize their value chains and promote sustainable actions, but the consumers also need to partake in the process of keeping the products in the value chain loop as it is up to them to make the final decision upon the end-of-life of an item of clothing. With these issues in mind, this dissertation aims to develop two solutions that can mitigate the aforementioned problems and promote sustainable actions towards a circular economy in the T&C value chain. A Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Business-to-Business (B2B) T&C value chainmanagement smart contract solution builton Hyperledger Fabric with traceability features
was developed to support the sustainability claims of participants in the value chain, from fiber to garment. The current traceability feature developed into the smart contract provides value chain operators the capabilities to trace a batch back to its origin, however, it also constraints scalability due to the exponential in crease in block size specially if considering a circular value chain. For the consumers, a Business-to-Consumer-to-Consumer (B2C2C) Decentralized Application (DApp) was proposed
with eco-gamification elements fo rpromoting the user’s engagement and motivation to complete tasks that contribute for the adoption of a circular economy in the T&C value chain. After testing the consumer DApp’s usability with the AttrakDiff survey, it was concluded that the system needs to focus it susability towards a task-oriented product instead of the current self-oriented results in order to promote actions that contribute to the circular economy of the T&C value chain
The relationship between executive functions and gross motor skills in rural children aged 8-10 years
Considering that cognitive and motor dimensions of human beings grow together, and that primary school age is one of the most important stages of children’s cognitive and motor development, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between executive functions and gross motor skills in rural children aged 8–10 years. This descriptive and correlational research was conducted with 93 Iranian rural primary school children aged 8 to 10 years. A Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) questionnaire and the Test of Gross Motor Development, second edition (TGMD-2) were used to collect data on executive functions and gross motor skills, respectively. The results showed that most of the correlations between criterion and predictor variables were moderate.
In the regression results we observed that among the components of executive functions, inhibition,
working memory, planning/organizing, and organization had a significant relationship with gross motor skills, but no relationship was found between other components and motor skills. As a result, it can be said that in predicting cognitive development and specifically mentioned executive functions, gross motor skills are an important and effective factor among rural children and, given the importance of cognitive development and executive functions in childhood, it seems that by helping to develop their gross motor skills, executive functions will also be strengthened. Finally, possible future studies are addressed, which could investigate the effect of different aspects of motor skill classifications on executive functions9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
double-blind crossover study
Background: to evaluate the effects of one week of supplementation with curcumin combined with piperine on physical performance, immune system cell counts, muscle damage, and plasma levels of inflammatory markers after a treadmill running training session. Methods: This study is a double-blind, crossover-balanced clinical trial with a three-week intervention. Sixteen male runners with a mean age of 36 ± 9 years and VO2 max of 60.6 ± 9.03 mL.kg −1 min −1 were recruited and randomly divided into 2 groups: the first group (CPG) was supplemented daily for 7 days with 500 mg of curcumin + 20 mg piperine, and the second group (PG) was supplemented with 540 mg of cellulose. After the 7th day of supplementation, the volunteers participated in the
experimental running protocol, where blood samples were collected before, after, and one hour after exercise for analysis of the number of leukocytes, creatine kinase, and cytokine concentration (IL-2, TNF-α, IFN, IL-6, and IL-10) using flow cytometry. This process was repeated, reversing the supplementation offered to the groups. Results: curcumin and piperine supplementation could not change the physical performance, immune cell counts, and muscle damage; however, the aerobic fatiguing exercise protocol inhibited the elevation of the plasmatic levels of some cytokines. The running exercise protocol could elevate the circulating levels of IL-2 (from 49.7 to 59.3 pg/mL), TNF-α (from 48.5 to 51.5 pg/mL), INF (from 128.8 to 165.0 pg/mL), IL-6 (from 63.1 to 77.3 pg/mL), and IL-10 (from 48.9 to 59.6 pg/mL) 1 h after the end of the running protocol. However, the curcumin and piperine supplementation could inhibit this elevation. Conclusions: curcumin and piperine supplementation had no effect on physical performance, immune cell counts, or muscle damage; however, the supplementation could modulate the kinetics of IL-2, TNF-α, INF, IL-6, and IL-10 1 h after the end of exercise.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
Framing: Good health adds life to years. The opportunities that open up with increased longevity depend to a large extent on Healthy Ageing. When these people live these additional years in good health, they contribute to the strength of societies; but if these additional years are dominated by poor health, the implications for older people and society are much more negative (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020).
The promotion of Healthy Ageing is one of the wishes of the Specialist Nurse in Community Nursing in the area of community health and public health nursing who, with specific skills in health planning, acts as a facilitating agent for the empowerment of communities in particular, the most vulnerable.
The promotion of Positive Mental Health appears, in this work, as a tool to enhance Healthy Ageing, based on Lluch-Canut 's multifactorial Positive Mental Health model.
The Professional Nature Internship, part of the curricular unit Professional Nature Internship with Final Report aimed at acquiring common and specific skills for specialized practice, and this specific report intends to be the materialization of the learning carried out and the acquired skills, based on the most recent scientific evidence, which is transversal to the entire document, even more evident in the research study that was carried out during the internship.
Methodology: The research study carried out is part of a research project in the contexto of institucionalized elderly people in Residencial Structure for Elderly People and includes, in addition to this theme, anxiety, loneliness and quality of life. From the methodological point of view, this is a study that follows the constructivist paradigm, in a quantitative, observational, cross-sectional and descriptive- correlational approach. Were outlined: to evaluate the level of Positive Mental Health of institutionalized elderly in Residential Structure for Elderly People; analyze the association between the level of Positive Mental Health and sociodemographic and clinical determinants and obtain an updated characterization of the elderly population living in Residential Structure for Elderly People . A clinical sociodemographic questionnaire prepared by the research project team and the Positive Mental Health Questionnaire, originally created and validated by Lluch-Canut and translated and validated for the Portuguese population by Sequeira et al.(2014) , were used as data collection instruments.
Results: Of the 181 elderly people surveyed, the majority revealed intermediate and high levels of Positive Mental Health in line with what is found in the literature. Some determinants were identified that suggest promoting Positive Mental Health, namely the fact that the elderly participate in the institution's activities (Pro-social attitude factor: t Studen= 2.309, p = 0.022; Interpersonal relationship skills factor: Student = 2.891, p = 0.004), receive visits (t Studen= 2.515; p = 0.013), choose institutionalization (t Studen= 2.166; p = 0.032) and feel that they have the opportunity to participate in the life of the institution (tStuden = -3.987; p = <0.001).
Conclusions: This study provides important data for the specialized work of the Specialist Nurse in Community Nursing in the planning of sustainable, inclusive projects and above all where the elderly have an active voice, being co-creators of their own health project
