How institutions are related to agriculture? Systematic literature review

In this paper, the author reviews the literature on institutions and their relations with agricultural economics. The aims of the article are to clarify the definition of an institution, indicate its relevance from the perspective of agricultural economics and propose a method of institution classification. Using the PRISMA method, 35 articles were selected out of 238 articles from the Web of Science database that met the established requirements (i.e. they were simultaneously related to institutions, economic performance and the agricultural sector). Based on the identified articles as well as the preliminary literature review it can be concluded that there is a lack of research that precisely defines institutions and examines the historical context at the same time. There are not many papers in which authors assess relations between institutions.

Natural resource funds, institutional qualityand governance: A systematic literature review

In recent years, there has been an international debate on the effectiveness of resource funds in the context of the “resource curse”. One aspect of assessing the effectiveness of these funds, which is receiving increasing attention, is determining the relationship between the funds and institutional quality and governance. The objective of this study is to systematically evaluate all available evidence regarding the relationship between the ef- fectiveness of natural resource funds, institutional quality and governance in the context of countering the “resource curse”. The study employed the SLR technique to examine 40 carefully selected articles for the period 1990–2023. In order to enhance the credibility of the analysis, an up-to-date information map derived from the literature was generated using the VOSviewer software. The study found that the analysed issue is both new and relevant, with many aspects lacking unanimous solutions. It was observed that the relationship between funds and institutional quality and governance exists, as indicated by both qualitative and quantitative research. The most significant studies on this topic emerged after 2005. The literature is largely concentrated on the significance of institutional quality and governance for fund effectiveness.

    Insurability of cryptocurrency wallets

This article concerns the possibilities of insuring cryptocurrency wallets using various assumptions and characteristics of perfectly insurable risk. The main goal of this article is to examine if and how cryptocurrency wallets risk fulfils the requirements of an ideally insurable risk. The topic of the research is important looking at the newest trends in financial markets and the growing number of cryptocurrency investors. The paper presents authors’ innovative method of approaching a part of cryptocurrency risk to insurance industry. Authors analysed requirements of an insurable risk and applied these requirements to a specific risk, i.e. the cryptocurrency wallet risk to further check if it is possible to insure such a risk. By introducing and defining cryptocurrency wallet risk, we found an element of cryptocurrencies which shows traits of a non-speculative risk and possibly fulfils insurability characteristics

The economic activity of women in families from different cultures

The presented analysis uses data from time-use surveys which were conducted in India and Poland in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The calculations made use of statistical information describing individual households and their members. The applied method of multiple regressions for cross-sectional data made it possible to take into account selected socio-demographic and economic characteristics of the analysed members of the population. The results obtained served for assessing the impact of such characteristics as marital status, children presence on the production activity of women. We present the time allocation of individuals with similar characteristics, but at different stages of their life cycle. Performing analogous estimations for Poland and India made it possible to directly compare the situation of women in these countries. Despite considerable differences in terms of social and cultural norms between the analysed societies, the situation of women living in them is in some respects similar. However, marked differences were also observed such as those related to economic activity depending on the level of education. Also, the influence of marriage on the allocation of time is different, as illustrated by comparing the situation of married women to those without a partner

Volume time and labor income: An analysis of labour of the motor bike transporters in Cameroon

    No full text
Purpose: This paper examines the hours and incomes of motorcycle transporters in Cameroun. Design/methodology/approach: Data from a field survey are analysed using the two-stage Heckman and Mincer models, respectively. Findings: The results show that long working hours, being an owner-operator, having a category A driving license, and having family responsibilities significantly increase the number of hours worked and the earnings of transporters. Long working hours in this field suggest insufficient employment opportunities, especially when they are accompanied by low levels of productivity or hourly earnings. Originality/value: As the process of institutionalising this activity, which provides a large number of direct jobs for the unemployed, continues, it is suggested that dialogue be pursued between the unions and associations of motorbike transporters and the public authorities to establish a framework through which transporters can benefit from financial support from the state. It is also suggested that awareness-raising seminars be organised on the profession’s risks and provide specific health cover for motorbike transporters

Second-round effects of food prices on core inflation in Turkey

Turkey has recently experienced persistently high food inflation, among the highest in emerging markets, with food accounting for a significant proportion of consumer expenditures. This study investigates the second-round effects of food price shocks on core inflation using monthly data from January 2013 to June 2024 through a Bayesian Structural Vector Autoregressive (SBVAR) model. Incorporating domestic and international macroeconomic variables, the model identifies second-round effects by imposing theory-based constraints and leveraging Bayesian methods. Results reveal that core inflation reacts strongly to food price shocks, with rising food prices worsening inflation expectations and amplifying second-round effects on overall inflation. Historical decomposition reveals a more persistent impact of food price shocks on core inflation and expectations post-COVID-19. These findings underscore the importance of closely monitoring food price dynamics to safeguard price stability in Turkey, highlighting their critical role in shaping inflationary pressures

The significance of tax risk for Polish companies based on the findings of an empirical study

Discussion of the problem of tax risk based on the empirical study. The paper explains the main aspects of tax risk, tax risk areas and its assessment. Critical analysis of existing literature and tax laws. Conclusions are formulated using a deductive method in the framework of tax theory and based on the analysis of tax laws and the author’s survey into the problem of tax risk conducted in the Wielkopolskie voivodeship in 2020. The survey results show that managers are increasingly aware of the tax risks associated with the activities of their companies and the industries in which they operate. They also indicate that, regardless of their size, companies should use tax risk management systems aligned with their tax strategies and managed by qualified staff. The article contributes to the analysis of tax risk

    Linder hypothesis and India’s services

This study examines the empirical validity of the Linder hypothesis for India’s service sector exports from 2005 to 2021, focusing on 35 major importing countries. We use a gravity model trade, applying Feasible Generalised Least Squares (FGLS) and two-step system generalised method of moments (GMM), incorporating country- and time-fixed effects. Our results confirm that the Linder hypothesis does not hold for Indian service exports, revealing an increase in trade intensity between countries with dissimilar income levels. The study finds that distance has a positive and significant impact on Indian service exports. Exchange rates have a negative and significant impact on India’s service exports, while the results for the RTA dummy variable are inconclusive. Sharing a common border, a common colony, and a language has a positive and significant effect on Indian service exports

Relationship between corporate sustainability performance and corporate financial performance: the case of companies from the WIG-ESG Index

The essential aim of this paper is to identify the effect of corporate sustainability performance (CSP) on corporate financial performance (CFP) among Polish companies, including all dimensions of sustainability. To achieve this goal, the main research hypothesis, stating that the relationship between CSP and corporate sales performance is positive, has been formulated. The empirical verification of this hypothesis is conducted among 21 companies from the WIG-ESG Index in two different research periods. The basic method of analysis is the panel regression model, which includes corporate sustainability scores as independent variables. All data was retrieved from the Refinitiv Eikon database and the Emerging Market Information Service. The main estimation result is that sales revenues are positively affected by environmental sustainability performance in the long period, while in the short period, governance sustainability performance has a positive impact on the return on sales
