    Low dose radiation regulates BRAF-induced thyroid cellular dysfunction and transformation

    Background: The existence of differentiated thyroid cells is critical to respond radioactive iodide treatment strategy in thyroid cancer, and loss of the differentiated phenotype is a trademark of iodide-refractive thyroid disease. While high-dose therapy has been beneficial to several cancer patients, many studies have indicated this clinical benefit was limited to patients having BRAF mutation. BRAF-targeted paired box gene-8 (PAX8), a thyroid-specific transcription factor, generally dysregulated in BRAF-mutated thyroid cancer. Methods: In this study, thyroid iodine-metabolizing gene levels were detected in BRAF-transformed thyroid cells after low and high dose of ionizing radiation. Also, an mRNA-targeted approach was used to figure out the underlying mechanism of low (0.01Gyx10 or 0.1Gy) and high (2Gy) radiation function on thyroid cancer cells after BRAF(V600E) mutation. Results: Low dose radiation (LDR)-induced PAX8 upregulation restores not only BRAF-suppressive sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) expression, one of the major protein necessary for iodine uptake in healthy thyroid, on plasma membrane but also regulate other thyroid metabolizing genes levels. Importantly, LDR-induced PAX8 results in decreased cellular transformation in BRAF-mutated thyroid cells. This study aims to examine the impact of hotel employees’ perceived CSR motives and CSR authenticity on organizational citizenship behavior. To achieve the research objective, first, a conceptual model was proposed based on a literature review. Second, the model was empirically analyzed via the structural equation modeling by AMOS using valid data, collected from current 253 employees of 8 deluxe hotels in South Korea. Third, analysis results showed that perceived CSR motives had partial influences on perceived CSR authenticity. CSR authenticity had a positive influence on organizational citizenship behavior. CSR authenticity partially had a mediation effect in the relationship between CSR motives and organizational citizenship behavior. A moderating effect of generational differences was revealed in the relationship between CSR authenticity and organizational citizenship behavior. These findings identified certain interrelationships among variables, and in particular, the importance of both CSR motives and authenticity in terms of hotels’ sustainable management and effective organizational management by confirming their impact to employees’ organizational citizenship behavior.     Optimal Slot Design of IPMSM in Railway With Independently Rotating Wheelsets

    This paper proposes a quasi-semi-closed (QSC) slot design method for an open-slot-type interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for independently rotating wheelsets necessary to reduce the total harmonic distortion of no-load back-electromotive force and the torque ripple in the IPMSM. Four different slot-opening models were selected-the basic model, hairpin coil model, magnetic-wedge model, and QSC-slot model-and 2-D finite-element analysis was performed under open-circuit and load operations for each of the four models. Next, the relationships among the cogging torque, the torque ripple, and the saturation phenomenon in the core were analyzed. In addition, the manufacturing process, manufacturing cost, fill factor, end-winding resistance, copper loss, and efficiency were investigated. Japan and China’s adoption of the German concept of culture before World War ��� was marked with confusion. Culture, as used in those times, had few distinctions from the traditional concept depicted in the Chinese character for civilization: ������. This German concept, however, failed to spread into a practical cultural movement in Japan, despite the widespread growth of ‘culturalism’ philosophy after World War ���. In contrast, the introduction of the German concept of culture into China after the failed Xinhai Revolution catalyzed the New Culture Movement. China, unlike Japan, and with few philosophical groundings adopted ‘the concept of culture’ and developed a strong cultural movement that made struggles with old ways a powerful slogan. In the case of Korea, the importation of ‘the concept of culture’ into Korea via Japan led to renewed interest in Korean traditions. The concept, at the time, equated to nationality in ways that emphasized Korean characteristics and reinforced national self-awareness. And while the movement to preserve national characteristics prior to Korea’s annexation to Japan carried signs of a new cultural movement, a full development failed to take place in the 1910s (despite Lee Kwangsoo’s activities in ‘spiritual civilization’). Regardless, the flow of principle of national self-determination and reconstructionism in world history had great influences on Korea, which culminated in the March First Declaration of Independence. The overarching logic at the time aimed at using civil disobedience to gain national self-determination and to embark on a new civilization and culture while reordering the world order. Combined with the concept of culture, the principle of national self-determination and reconstructionism became a powerful weapon. The March First Declaration of Independence thus became a ‘cultural bill of rights’ that ushered in a new era of culture to Korea and the world. In this regard, the March First Movement may be called a ‘struggle for culture.’ The article presents three major shifts in East Asian modernity that the March First Movement encouraged. First, the March First Movement undermined preexisting hierarchies within the civilizational paradigm. Second, the movement was predicated on an “era of culture” endemic of the 1920s.     Conjugation of prostate cancer-specific aptamers to polyethylene glycol-grafted polyethylenimine for enhanced gene delivery to prostate cancer cells

    Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers. In this study, a prostate cancer-specific aptamer, Wy5a, was conjugated to polyethylenimine (PEI) with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) linker for prostate cancer-specific gene delivery. PEI-PEG-AS1411 was synthesized as a non-specific control. PEI-PEG-Wy5a formed complexes with plasmid DNA in a spherical form with a diameter of 70 nm and a positive surface-charge. In transfection assays, PEI-PEG-Wy5a had higher gene delivery efficiency to PC-3 prostate cancer cells than did PEI-PEG or PEI-PEG-AS1411, but not in other types of cells. The results suggest that PEI-PEG-Wy5a may be useful for prostate cancer-specific gene delivery. (C) 2019 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Published by Elsevier B.V.     The Role of Emotional Service Expectation Toward Perceived Quality and Satisfaction: Moderating Effects of Deep Acting and Surface Acting

    A conceptual model articulating the nature of customer expectations and satisfaction over services was proposed with emotional factors. Five propositions about consumer emotional service expectations as a primary antecedent toward confirmation, perceived quality, and satisfaction were provided. As moderators, two dimensions of consumer detection of emotional labor (i.e., detecting deep acting and surface acting) were imposed on each of the relationships. Evidence demonstrated the roles of emotional service expectation in service confirmation and satisfaction. The moderating effects of consumer detections of employees’ emotional strategies were limited to the relationship between emotional service expectation and confirmation; its relationship was weakened by detections of surface acting while the other relationships were not moderated by detections of deep nor surface acting. Structural equation modeling analyses were conducted using online survey data targeting consumers in the hotel industry.This work was supported by the research fund of Hanyang University (HY-2018)

    Review of Organic/Inorganic Thin Film Encapsulation by Atomic Layer Deposition for a Flexible OLED Display

    Recent trends in thin film encapsulations (TFEs), fabricating organic/inorganic encapsulation films are reviewed. Atomic layer deposited inorganic films have superior barrier performance and have advantages of excellent uniformity over large scales at relatively low deposition temperatures. However, organic film should be combined with a hybrid structure for improved flexibility and longer lag time. We introduce various organic deposition methods and mechanisms for enhancing barrier performance. However, stress engineering is required to achieve high performance TFEs for flexible devices, new materials and deposition methods. First, modulating the internal stress in TFEs should be considered to increase flexibility by adopting other layers that can reduce internal stress. Second, controlling the configuration of the hybrid structure can prevent degradation due to cracks. Third, the introduction of a neutral plane as the middle layer decreases the strain. The results summarize how the device can improve barrier performance under external stress.     ZIF-8 particle size effects on reverse osmosis performance of polyamide thin-film nanocomposite membranes: Importance of particle deposition

    Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes based on nanomaterial-embedded ultrathin polyamide layers have been extensively studied as an energy-efficient material for reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. Although several studies have reported that TFN membranes with zeolitic imidazole frameworks (e.g., ZIF-8) showed improved RO performances, attributed to its intrinsic microporosity and high specific surface area, an in-depth study on the role of ZIF-8 nanoparticles in selective polyamide layers has not yet been published. Here we synthesized ZIF-8 nanoparticles with different average sizes (60, 150, and 250 nm) and investigated the effects of particle size on the separation performance of TFN membranes. Interestingly, it was found that the deposition of ZIF-8 nanoparticles on the microporous polysulfone (PSf) support prior to interfacial polymerization of the polyamide layer was influenced by ZIF-8 particle size. Small-sized ZIF-8 nanoparticles showed the highest surface coverage, which is consistent with the classical particle deposition theories. The interface area between ZIF-8 nanoparticles and polyamide matrix varied with particle size, ultimately affecting the RO performance of TFN membranes. Our results firstly reveal that the amount of particle deposition prior to interfacial polymerization could be strongly influenced by particle size, emphasizing the importance of particle deposition for the further studies on nanoparticle-embedded TFN membranes.This work was supported by a grant from the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) (201700000000726)

    Hydrogels with an embossed surface: An all-in-one platform for mass production and culture of human adipose-derived stem cell spheroids

    Stem cell spheroids have been studied extensively in organoid culture and therapeutic transplantation. Herein, hydrogels with an embossed surface (HES) were developed as an all-in-one platform that can enable the rapid formation and culture of a large quantity of size-controllable stem cell spheroids. The embossed structure on the hydrogel was adjustable according to the grit designation of the sandpaper. Human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) were rapidly assembled into spheroids on the hydrogel, with their size distribution precisely controlled from 95 +/- 6 pm to 181 +/- 15 mu m depending on surface roughness. The hADSC spheroids prepared from the HES demonstrated expression of sternness markers and differentiation capacity. In addition, HES-based spheroids showed significantly greater VEGF secretion than spheroids grown on a commercially available low-attachment culture plate. Exploiting those advantages, the HES-based spheroids were used for 3D bioprinting, and the spheroids within the 3D-printed construct showed improved retention and VEGF secretion compared to the same 3D structure containing single cell suspension. Collectively, HES would offer a useful platform for mass fabrication and culture of stem cell spheroids with controlled sizes for a variety of biomedical applications.This work was supported by a grant from the National ResearchFoundation of Korea, which is supported by the Korean government(MEST) (NRF-2016R1A2B3009936).     Experimental rat prostatitis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis infection

    Background Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) is the most common sexually transmitted parasite. It has been detected in prostatic tissue of patients with prostatitis and reported to be associated with chronic prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia as well as prostate cancer. Recently, experimental rodent models of prostatitis induced by pathogen infection have been developed. However, there have so far been no reports of prostatitis caused by T. vaginalis infection in animals. Here, we investigated whether infection with T. vaginalis via the rat urethra could cause prostatitis. Methods T. vaginalis was injected into prostate through urethra of rat (Wistar rats), and the rats were killed 1, 2, or 4 weeks later. The presence of T. vaginalis trophozoites in the rat prostates was examined by immunohistochemistry, and pathological changes of the prostate were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and evaluated by grading from 0 to 5 for inflammatory cell infiltration, acinar changes, and interstitial fibrosis. Infiltrated mast cells were observed by toluidine blue staining of rat prostate tissue. Chemokine C-C motif ligand 2 (CCL2) levels of the rat prostates were measured by ELISA. Results T. vaginalis trophozoites were observed in acini in the prostates of the injected rats. The prostate tissues had higher pathological scores, and 83% (5/6) and 100% (6/6) of the ventral and dorsolateral lobes (n = 6), respectively, were inflamed. Infiltration and degranulation of mast cells were observed at higher rates in prostate sections of the T. vaginalis-infected rats. Also, prostate tissues of the injected rats had increased CCL2 levels. Conclusions Injection of T. vaginalis in rats caused prostatitis as revealed by pathologic changes, mast cell infiltration and increased CCL2 production. Therefore, this study provides the first evidence that T. vaginalis infection in rats causes prostatitis.National Research Foundation of Korea, Grant number: NRF-2017R1A2B400207
