Piezoelectric device operating as sensor and harvester to drive switching circuit in LED shoes
The power generated by the designed piezoelectric energy harvester replaces the standby power that is constantly used in sensors and driving circuits in commercial LED shoes; the harvester thus reduces battery consumption. LED shoes incorporating a piezoelectric energy harvester are designed for night workers who work near roads. The piezoelectric energy harvester, composed of a piezoelectric device (PZT ceramic), which is inserted under the insoles of shoes, converts mechanical energy generated by motion of user into electrical energy. The designed harvester has an area of 6 x 4 mm and height of 3 mm (pressed state); it weighs 14 g. Because of its small size and light weight, device is suitable for real workers' shoes. This piezoelectric energy harvester produces 800 mu W at a resistive matching point of 400 k Omega; it is used as a sensor to control an LED switching circuit, allowing the LEDs to blink based on user movements. By applying the piezoelectric energy harvester to LED shoes, battery usage time can be doubled compared to LED shoes that are turned on continuously. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Cyclodextrin-metal–organic framework (CD-MOF): From synthesis to applications
Porous coordination compounds, commonly known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), exhibit many unique characteristics (e.g., high surface area, high porosity, and tunability). The corresponding naturally occurring counterparts, CD-MOFs have opened a new avenue of research in light of its non-toxic, edible, and renewable nature. These characteristics have led to their applications into numerous directions including drug delivery, CO2 capture, separation/purification, adsorption, sensors, food packaging, electrical conductors, memristors, photocatalysis, and polymerization. In this review, we provide a brief discussion about the available technologies for the synthesis of CD-MOFs and their applications in many prospective areas. The problem of the affinity between Korean and Chinese and the relation of the two languages
有些韓語固有詞與對應的上古漢語詞類似。譬如, 表示「風」的韓語固有詞param和「風」字的漢語上古音*prəm類似。一些學者認爲這些韓漢類似詞一定是從同一詞源發展而來,提出韓漢同源說,主張韓語和漢語屬於同一語系。本文將從微觀和宏觀的視角探討該學說是否妥當,並指出韓漢同源說存在的一些問題。本文還將根據陳保亞(1996)的理論,考察了韓漢類似詞在Swadesh (1952; 1955)的100核心詞(第一階詞)和200核心詞減除100核心詞(第二階詞)裏出現的數量。發現第一階核心詞目錄裏主要有「吾、汝、人、男、葉、眼、牙、街、白」等9個韓漢類似詞,第二階核心詞目錄裏也有「日(天)、其、腿、老、江、聞、轉、洗、風」等9個類似詞。韓漢類似詞的數量在第一階詞目錄和第二階詞目錄裏幾乎完全相同,分佈曲線趨向平直。陳保亞認為少數類似詞分佈曲線不上不下,走向平直就表明兩種語言為接觸關係。因此本文將論證韓語和漢語不是親屬關係而是接觸關係。This work was supported by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF-2017S1A5A2A01027702). 密西根大學白一平(William Baxter)教授、亞利桑那州立大學吳英均(Young Oh)教授、中國社會科學院語言研究所錢有

Efficacy of the HLA-B∗58:01 Screening Test in Preventing Allopurinol-Induced Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions in Patients with Chronic Renal Insufficiency-A Prospective Study
BACKGROUND: Thus far, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*58:01 has been recognized as the most important risk factor for allopurinol induced severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs).
OBJECTIVE: To determine the usefulness of prospective screening for the HLA-B*58:01 allele to identify Korean individuals at risk for SCARs induced by allopurinol treatment.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 542 patients with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) from 10 hospitals nationwide and performed DNA genotyping to determine whether they carried the HLA-B*58:01 allele. Of these, 503 HLA-B*58:01-negative patients (92.8% of total) were treated with allopurinol, and 39 HLA-B*58:01-positive patients (7.2%) were treated with febuxostat, an alternative drug. The patients then were followed up biweekly for 90 days using a telephone survey to monitor symptoms of adverse drug reactions, including SCARs. As a control, we used the historical incidence rate of allopurinol-induced SCARs in 4002 patients with CRI from the same hospitals who were enrolled retrospectively.
RESULTS: Nineteen patients in the prospective cohort developed mild and transient adverse reactions but none showed allopurinol-induced SCARs. By contrast, we identified 38 patients with allopurinol-induced SCARs (0.95%) in the historical control. The difference in the incidence of allopurinol-induced SCARs between the prospective cohort and historical control was statistically significant (0% vs 0.95%, respectively; P = .029).
CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated the clinical usefulness of the HLA-B*58:01 screening test before allopurinol administration to prevent allopurinol-induced SCARs in patients with CRI. Clinical outcomes of patients with active rheumatoid arthritis with normal acute phase reactant values
Aim Despite high clinical disease activity, some patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have normal acute phase reactant (APR) values. This study aimed to determine the clinical outcomes of active RA patients with normal APR values. Method Of 5376 patients with RA enrolled in the Korean observational study network for arthritis (KORONA) registry, 400 patients with disease duration of ˂2 years who had Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI) score of ˃2.8 at baseline, biologic-naive, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) drawn at both baseline and 2-year follow-up visits were identified. Patients were grouped according to baseline APR levels: normal APRs, one APR elevated, and both APRs elevated. Results Baseline tender and swollen joint counts, mean CDAI and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI) scores were significantly lower in the normal APRs group compared with APR-elevated groups (P ˂ 0.0001). At 2-year follow-up, mean CDAI scores, HAQ-DI, and percentage of the patient achieving remission were not significantly different between the normal APRs group compared with the APR-elevated groups regardless of the baseline disease activity. However, in patients with baseline CDAI moderate to high disease activity, the normal APRs group less frequently required initiation of the biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs compared with the APR-elevated groups (P = 0.044). N-terminal methionine excision of proteins creates tertiary destabilizing N-degrons of the Arg/N-end rule pathway
All organisms begin protein synthesis with methionine (Met). The resulting initiator Met of nascent proteins is irreversibly processed by Met aminopeptidases (MetAPs). N-terminal (Nt) Met excision (NME) is an evolutionarily conserved and essential process operating on up to two-thirds of proteins. However, the universal function of NME remains largely unknown. MetAPs have a well-known processing preference for Nt-Met with Ala, Ser, Gly, Thr, Cys, Pro, or Val at position 2, but using CHX-chase assays to assess protein degradation in yeast cells, as well as protein-binding and RT-qPCR assays, we demonstrate here that NME also occurs on nascent proteins bearing Met-Asn or Met-Gln at their N termini. We found that the NME at these termini exposes the tertiary destabilizing Nt residues (Asn or Gln) of the Arg/N-end rule pathway, which degrades proteins according to the composition of their Nt residues. We also identified a yeast DNA repair protein, MQ-Rad16, bearing a Met-Gln N terminus, as well as a human tropomyosin-receptor kinase-fused gene (TFG) protein, MN-TFG, bearing a Met-Asn N terminus as physiological, MetAP-processed Arg/N-end rule substrates. Furthermore, we show that the loss of the components of the Arg/N-end rule pathway substantially suppresses the growth defects of naa20 yeast cells lacking the catalytic subunit of NatB Nt acetylase at 37 degrees C. Automatic Disease Annotation From Radiology Reports Using Artificial Intelligence Implemented by a Recurrent Neural Network
OBJECTIVE. Radiology reports are rich resources for biomedical researchers. Before utilization of radiology reports, experts must manually review these reports to identify the categories. In fact, automatically categorizing electronic medical record (EMR) text with key annotation is difficult because it has a free-text format. To address these problems, we developed an automated system for disease annotation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. Reports of musculoskeletal radiography examinations performed from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2016, were exported from the database of Hanyang University Medical Center. After sentences not written in English and sentences containing typos were excluded, 3032 sentences were included. We built a system that uses a recurrent neural network (RNN) to automatically identify fracture and nonfracture cases as a preliminary study. We trained and tested the system using orthopedic surgeon-classified reports. We evaluated the system for the number of layers in the following two ways: the word error rate of the output sentences and performance as a binary classifier using standard evaluation metrics including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score.
RESULTS. The word error rate using Levenshtein distance showed the best performance in the three-layer model at 1.03%. The three-layer model also showed the highest overall performance with the highest precision (0.967), recall (0.967), accuracy (0.982), and F1 score (0.967).
CONCLUSION. Our results indicate that the RNN-based system has the ability to classify important findings in radiology reports with a high F1 score.
