Evaluating the Impact of Simulation-Based Training on Nursing Student Clinical Decision-Making Skills
Nursing students must be able to make clinical decisions that have a direct impact on patient outcomes and quality of care. Traditional clinical training may not provide sufficient hands-on experience in complex or high-risk situations. Simulation-based training (SBT) provides a controlled environment where students can practice clinical decision-making (CDM), but its direct impact on decision-making competence requires further research. To evaluate the ability of SBT to improve nurse trainees\u27 competence in CDM. To compare progress in reaction time, critical thinking, problem-solving, confidence, and decision-making before and after simulation training. A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test approach was used, with nursing students in the clinical training phase. Participants underwent high-fidelity simulation (HFS) scenarios to evaluate their decision-making ability. Data were gathered by structured observational checklists, self-reported confidence questionnaires, and performance evaluations. ANOVAs and paired t-tests were used to compare the results before and after the intervention. Results showed that SBT significantly improved nursing students\u27 ability to evaluate critical thinking, their level of confidence, and their ability to respond time effectively under pressure. The findings demonstrated that following the intervention, decision-making abilities significantly improved; SBT is an effective educational technique to help nursing students improve their CDM skills
Evaluating Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Critical Care Training: A Simulation-Based Learning Research in Medical Education
Simulation-based learning (SBL) is recognized as an invaluable teaching medium in medical education, providing an opportunity for healthcare practitioners to acquire hands-on experience in managing emergencies within a controlled environment. Although the practice of critical care needs no emphasis in medical training, there is little empirical evidence regarding the effects of simulation-based learning on medical trainees. This research assesses how an SBL would increase satisfaction and self-confidence in medical trainees concerning critical care scenarios. A total of 170 participants included undergraduate medical trainees who took part in well-structured simulation exercises depicting live emergencies, such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and sepsis. In evaluating the effect of SBL, participants had to complete pre- and post-simulation satisfaction and self-confidence surveys. A paired t-test was used to compare pre-and post-simulation self-confidence ratings. Finally, descriptive statistics were used to assess the satisfaction levels, and thematic analysis was conducted for the qualitative feedback from participants. A significant change in self-confidence was documented post-simulation (p<0.05). On the whole, participants were happy with the simulation practice, particularly the levels of realism and the opportunity for hands-on practice. Feedback indicated that training-specific debriefing sessions were greatly valued for reinforcing learning and skills acquisition. The research supports the incorporation of SBL into critical care curricula to promote the greater preparation of healthcare professionals for high-stakes clinical situations
Therapeutic Potential of Stem Cells for Treating Retinal Ganglion Cell Degeneration in Optic Neuropathies
Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration is a symbol of optic neuropathies, leading to progressive vision loss with limited therapeutic options. Stem cell-based medicines have gained recognition as a potential breakthrough strategy for neuro-protection and regeneration in such conditions. This research investigated the efficacy of Human Periodontal Ligament-Derived Stem Cells (PDLSCs) and the Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) of Optic Neuropathies in a rat model. PDLSCs were isolated, characterized, and transplanted either as whole cells or via their secreted EVs. The neuroprotective and regenerative effects were assessed at 15, 61, and 120 days post-injury through histological analysis, RGC survival counts, axonal regeneration assays, and functional restoration of visual pathways. Additionally, serum-deprived PDLSCs were used to evaluate their impact on neuroprotection compared to regular PDLSCs. PDLSC transplantation significantly enhanced RGC survival and reduced apoptosis for up to 120 days post-injury, with marked improvements observed at 15 and 61 days. Axonal regeneration along the optic nerve was evident, particularly at 120 days, demonstrating a sustained regenerative response. Similar neuroprotective effects were observed with serum-deprived PDLSCs, suggesting a potential role of paracrine signaling in their therapeutic action. However, transplantation of EVs isolated from PDLSCs failed to induce significant neuroprotection or axonal regeneration, indicating that direct cellular interaction can be essential for optimal therapeutic outcomes. These results support further exploration of PDLSCs as a viable cell therapy approach for neurodegenerative conditions affecting the optic nerve
Andragogy, an undeferable need in the health sciences because of the aging population
Introduction. The demographic transition is taking place all over the world, which translates into an increase in life expectancy, taking on greater importance due to its context within the planning of public spending for the execution of health policies and programs. Objective. To assess the relationship between andragogy, demographic transition and the aging process from the context of Health Sciences, as an effective way for health professionals to confront this irreversible phenomenon. Development. Thedemographic transition and therefore the intergenerational change, is a widespread process in our America, although it presents different patterns according to the characteristics of each society, population aging is a universal problem. Adult education is and has been a global concern since the 1960s when the Second World Conference on Adult Education proposed by UNESCO was held. At that event, recommendations were made for theorizing about the benefits of Andragogy and its use in the teaching and learningprocesses of adults. Conclusions. An internal transformation is necessary in the academic curriculum of medical universities to theorize about the benefits of Andragogy and its use in the teaching and learning processes of adults as an effective way for health professionals to confront this irreversible phenomenon that is population aging.
Regularities in the professional development of the specialist in Family Medicine on systemic lupus erythematosus
Introduction: The professional development of Family Medicine (FM) specialists in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is necessary to respond to current social demands. The current research aims to identify the existing regularities in the professional development of FM specialists in SLE, at the Hermanos Cruz University Polyclinic in Pinar del Río.Methods: A methodology with a dialectical materialist approach was taken into account for the analyses carried out. Methods from the theoretical and empirical levels were applied, together with statistical-mathematical methods, to interpret and process the information.Results: The barriers that limit the object of study were identified due to the lack of a model for information processing that improves the timely identification of SLE symptoms at the primary health level, inaccuracy in identifying clinical signs and symptoms of SLE due to weak integration of previous knowledge and professional experiences to the assessment of the patient, limited planning of actions for the continuous improvement of the professional performance of the MF specialist, focused on the theoretical-methodological preparation that allows the timely identification of SLE symptoms, insufficient understanding of the need for participation to organize knowledge in the interaction of the functions of improvement and professional performance.Conclusions: The professional training of Family Medicine specialists in SLE at the Hermanos Cruz University Polyclinic has limitations for adequate identification of the symptoms of the disease, which hinders efficient performance in Primary Health Care
Consumption of psychoactive substances and depression in adolescents in the municipality of Aracataca, Magdalena, Colombia
The purpose of this research was to identify a possible relationship between the consumption of psychoactive substances and depression in a group of lower secondary education adolescents at a state educational institution in the municipality of Aracataca, Magdalena, Colombia. The methodology employed was quantitative, through a descriptive-correlational study. The sample consisted of 106 intentionally selected students, comprising 57 girls and 51 boys. The age range was 13 to 17 years, belonging to socioeconomic stratum 1, and they were in the 9th grade. The CDS questionnaire was applied to assess the presence of depression, and the abbreviated DUSI-R to determine the consumption of psychoactive substances. The research revealed a significant correlation between the consumption of psychoactive substances and the presence of depressive symptoms in adolescents, a finding that illuminates the complexity of the factors influencing mental health in this population. This discovery underscores the importance of adopting a holistic approach in the care of adolescents, addressing both substance use and mental health problems comprehensively. The interrelationship between these two factors suggests that they can mutually influence each other, highlighting the need for interventions that address both aspects simultaneously and in coordination. By adopting a comprehensive and proactive approach—including prevention and treatment—it is possible to promote the overall well-being of adolescents and reduce the negative impact of these factors on their development and quality of life
Logistics digitization of international customs processes: a bibliometric analysis
The present study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis on the logistic digitalization of international customs processes between 2013 and 2024. The analysis of the data through bibliometrics made it possible to quantify scientific production. Relevance and keywords in English (logistics digitalization, international customs processes) allowed the selection of the 37 Scopus publications used in the study. The largest significant increase in scientific production occurred between 2022 and 2023 (n=43.2; 16%), with Germany being the leading country (n=6 publications, 13.3%). Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems was the most important source, with three publications. Author Belov, V.B. had the highest number of citations (06) and one article. Of these publications, 49% were scholarly articles and 36% were classified in the topics of computer science and engineering. It is concluded that the digitization of international customs regimes in logistics has more sources overall, a wider range of writers and topics covered, and more sources, providing a more complete picture of the visibility, impact and importance of scientific output on a global scale. This bibliometric analysis lays a solid foundation for further research by providing evidence-based support through a rigorous examination of the existing literature
Higher education as barriers without limits in Colombia
Introduction: Higher education in Colombia faces multiple challenges that limit access and educational quality. From its colonial roots to the present, socioeconomic and structural barriers persist that restrict educational equity.Methods: An exhaustive bibliographic review was carried out based on relevant academic sources obtained from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select documents relevant to the Colombian context.Results: Economic, social and educational barriers that affect access to higher education were identified. Socioeconomic inequality influences students\u27 academic achievement, while public policies have attempted to mitigate these problems without achieving equitable access. Likewise, the high dropout rates reflect the insufficiency of strategies to guarantee student permanence.Conclusions: Higher education in Colombia continues to be inaccessible to large sectors of the population due to structural and socioeconomic factors. Despite advances in coverage, equity and educational quality remain pending challenges. More effective public policies and greater investment in educational inclusion programs are required to overcome these barriers
Interdisciplinary collaboration in medical education: intersections between educational psychology and health sciences
The study aimed at a semi-systematic review of the literature published between 2018 and 2022 on interdisciplinary collaboration in medical education, focusing on the intersection between educational psychology and health sciences. This approach sought to identify significant trends, critical gaps, and future opportunities. The findings show that integrating theoretical systems of educational psychology enriches student learning and prepares them for complex clinical and organizational challenges. Among the strategies, it was observed that those based on self-regulated learning and stress management were shown to improve academic performance and resilience. However, their long-term impact needs to be evaluated. In addition, it was found that the design of collaborative learning environments encourages interaction between disciplines, promoting transversal skills such as effective communication and decision-making under pressure. However, implementation faced challenges, such as the lack of teacher training in interdisciplinary methodologies and adaptation to diverse cultural contexts. Gaps were identified in measuring these collaborations\u27 effectiveness and exploring emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. It is concluded that interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for comprehensive medical education, but more research is needed to maximize its impact on developing competent and resilient professionals
