The University Substantive Processes: Quality or Quantity

This study aimed to analyze the core university processes in Ecuador—teaching, research, and community engagement—highlighting the tensions between expanding access and maintaining quality. With the growing demand for higher education, universities face challenges in balancing massification with the need to ensure meaningful learning experiences, relevant research, and impactful social contributions. A qualitative design was employed, combining semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and document review. Participants included faculty, students, administrators, and community members, whose perspectives were examined to understand the dynamics, strengths, and limitations of the three university processes. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify convergences and divergences across stakeholders. The findings reveal that while enrollment has expanded, the pressure on limited resources has negatively affected educational quality, particularly in terms of personalized student support and academic follow-up. In research, a notable increase in scientific production was identified, yet a persistent disconnection remains between research topics and the concrete needs of Ecuadorian society. In community engagement, universities have made progress in initiating collaborative projects with local actors, but problems of sustainability, continuity, and systematic evaluation limit their long-term impact. These tensions illustrate the need to strengthen the articulation of the three processes rather than addressing them in isolation. Ecuadorian universities must critically review current evaluation models, promote policies that balance student numbers with educational quality, and reinforce long-term, community-based strategies. Only through stronger integration of teaching, research, and engagement can universities ensure effective contributions to sustainable development and meaningful improvements in educational quality

From the Digital Ecosystem to Critical Artificial Intelligence

Digital transformation in Latin American higher education, driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), constitutes a complex phenomenon that reshapes not only technological environments but also pedagogical practices, institutional structures, and the ethical frameworks that underpin university life. In this context, a critical perspective is essential to examine how these technologies influence the reproduction of inequalities and the redefinition of knowledge. This study aims to critically analyze the discourses, practices, and policies related to university digitalization and the integration of AI in higher education institutions across Latin America, from an ethical, contextualized, and situated perspective. The research follows an interpretive approach with socio-pedagogical and sociocultural orientation, grounded in an extensive documentary review, a comparative analysis of institutional cases, and the use of secondary sources. Although no direct fieldwork was conducted, replicable methodological instruments were designed as proactive contributions for future research. The main findings reveal structural tensions between modernization narratives and the real conditions of many public universities. It is evident that digitalization progresses more strongly in administrative areas than in pedagogical ones, and that AI is often adopted without solid ethical frameworks or meaningful faculty involvement. The study concludes that digital transformation in universities will only be socially and pedagogically meaningful if guided by principles of equity, technological sovereignty, and cognitive justice, recognizing Latin America’s cultural and epistemic diversity as a starting point rather than a barrier

Introduction: As global populations age, culturally responsive nursing interventions are critical to enhancing functional performance in older adults. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a context-sensitive sports nursing model tailored to Indonesian community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating quantitative pre-post tests with qualitative thematic analysis. Functional endurance and agility were assessed using the Two-Minute Step Test and Eight-Foot Up-and-Go Test among 60 participants. Data were collected before and after a 12-week culturally adapted sports nursing intervention. Simultaneously, semi-structured interviews explored participants’ experiences, with thematic analysis used to identify sociocultural influences on engagement and adherence. Results: Quantitative findings showed significant improvements in endurance (mean steps increased from 49.61 to 61.40, p < 0.001) and agility (mean time reduced from 9.35 to 7.51 seconds, p < 0.001). Qualitative analysis revealed that cultural values, community dynamics, and traditional beliefs strongly influenced participation and sustained involvement. The integration of local customs, group cohesion, and familiar physical activities enhanced acceptability and motivation. Conclusions: The study developed a replicable, culturally responsive sports nursing model that significantly improves functional performance in older adults. By embedding cultural mapping into program design, the model supports inclusivity and sustainability in community-based care. Findings advocate for global standards in nursing education that emphasize cultural competence, preparing future nurses to deliver equitable, patient-centered care across diverse populations. This approach offers a scalable framework for geriatric health interventions in low- and middle-income countries
