Kibera…, make yourself at home! Researching the community development in Nairobi’s informal settlement of Kibera
The report presents findings from research conducted on a community development in the informal settlement of Kibera in Nairobi. The research was conducted as a base for my Master’s Thesis in the year 2006 and focused on the community-based youth organizations. Apart from observing and describing their activities I recorded the emic perception of life in Kibera and views on poverty. I found out that the common outsiders’ discourse and description of life in an impoverished settlement differs greatly from the view of its young adult inhabitants. Due to the youth’s enthusiastic and indeed philosophical attitude to life I decided to focus on the positive aspects and reveal the wealth present in Kibera. The wealth, as I tried to show, rests in the young proactive population of Kibera who are striving to be recognized and respected
The body as a limit of phenomenology
The study interprets two phenomenological approaches to the body and underlines their weak points. More attention is dedicated to Husserl’s explication of the body in Ideas II: particularly on the basis of his theory of “localization“ we try to show that Husserl underestimates the extensionality of the body. Merleau-Ponty’s concept in Phenomenology of Perception is then interpreted as such an approach to the body that reduces it to an impersonal skill of our (bodily) actions. Our conclusion is that phenomenology cannot conceive the body as a principle of appearing, the constitutive role of which it might articulate through an analysis of experience, but instead it should respect it as an “area“ of the un-apparent that manifests itself autonomously in experience. Foreign Aid and Self-Reliance in Post- Socialist Tanzania (The Case of the Distribution of Mosquito Bed Nets)
Self-reliance was a cornerstone of Ujamaa socialism – the ideology of Tanzania from 1967 till the mid-1980s. In the post-Cold-War period socialist ideology was actually abandoned, together with the really valuable concept of self-reliance. As most African countries, Tanzania is crucially dependent on foreign aid. We argue that aid can play a positive part for Tanzania and countries like it, but only if it promotes their self-development which, in its turn, is possible only if a nation is or strives to become self-reliant. However, in contemporary Tanzania the culture of self-reliance has almost disappeared since national ideology has changed, and many people rely on foreign aid and national government, not on their own hard work. At the same time, the union of foreign donors and corrupt national bureaucracy results in Tanzania in aid without development that, as in the case of aid for mosquito bed nets, cannot promote self-reliance and, hence, socio-economic progress.

A “grammar” of music and its perspicuous representations
The paper elaborates on Wittgenstein’s idea of philosophical grammar by transposing it to the field of music and demonstrating how the concept of “perspicuous representation” can be used in delimiting philosophy as something that cannot be meaningfully said. Frege\u27s conception of the reference of a general term
Gottlob Frege distinguished between sense and reference of expressions. \u27Sense\u27 according to him is that what the expression means, \u27reference\u27 is that what is designated by it. This distinction concerns both singular and general terms but Frege’s analyses focused on general terms are much less known. It is crucial, I argue, to appreciate the importance of the fact that the reference of a general term is, according to Frege, a concept – identified with an unsaturated function in the Fregean sense, i.e. not a set, and not a mapping. In this way Frege can keep some important intuitions about universals – for instance that we can have a general concept (know a property or a relation) even if we don’t know which objects fall under it. I also try to show that it is not clear whether Frege really defended the thesis usually attributed to him that the identity of concepts is guaranteed solely by their coextensivity.
