    Je to o fenomenálním charakteru

    Get PDF
Tomáš Hříbek‘s arguments against the phenomenal character are based mainly on Dennett‘s beliefs. Dennett‘s long-preferred strategy in dealing with this problem is methodological naturalism. This approach has certainly bore its fruits, especially when it comes to opening a really critical debate on the issue of qualia. The problem of consciousness is, however, nowadays treated rather within materialistic metaphysics than within Dennett‘s methodological naturalism. This preference has both empirical and philosophical reasons which we considered with Tomáš Marvan in the book Vědomí a jeho teorie. In view of the fact that Hříbek‘s monograph responds to some of the opinions from our book, I comment on these reactions and clarify our attitudes. At the same time, I make remarks to Hříbek‘s classification of our position within materialistic metaphysics as type-B materialism. The second part of the paper deals with the phenomenal nature ofconscious experience, and attempts to argue that this hard problem cannot be overcome simply by demonstrating the unsustainability of the traditional understanding of qualia

This is an answer to the critics of my book What It’s Like, or What It’s About? The Place of Consciousness in the Material World (2017). I proceed from the least to the most serious objections. I start with Jakub Mihálik’s defense of Russellian Monism against my claim that it is not a genuine alternative to standard dualism and materialism. In reply, I claim this is a side issue to the central aim of my book, which is to undermine the concept of phenomenal consciousness assumed by Russellian Monism as much as by every other standard theory. One of these standard theories is reductive materialism, pursued by Michal Polák and Tomáš Marvan. Both Polák and Marvan are worried by Dennett’s alleged eliminativism, even though their arguments somewhat differ. Polák believes in a deflationary concept of consciousness, which I am afraid lacks a definite content. Marvan offers an “innocent” concept of consciousness, on which there is supposed to be a general consensus, but I think he just assumes that the concept of phenomenal property is part of the definition of consciousness. Curiously, while Polák and Marvan take me as to be a Dennettian, Stefanie Dach argues that I misinterpret Dennett. Conversely, I believe that she overlooks weak points in Dennett’s theory

Russellian Monism as a Self-Standing Metaphysical Position

The paper critically discusses the treatment of Russellian monism in Tomáš Hříbek’s monograph Jaké to je, nebo o čem to je? (What It’s Like, or What It’s About?). According to Hříbek, Russellian monism, the approach to phenomenal consciousness inspired by the insights of Bertrand Russell, is not a real alternative to materialism, dualism and idealism. I argue that Russellian monism, on the contrary, can be viewed as a self-standing philosophical position which, moreover, avoids the main problems of these traditional approaches. I first address the objection that the fundamental entities of neutral monism have a mental, rather than neutral nature. In connection with neutral monism, I also express some worries concerning Hříbek’s via negativa definition of physicalism. Thereafter I explain why the causal closure of the physical which poses a serious difficulty for dualism is not a problem for Russellian monism and emphasize that Russellian monism is able to tackle challenges, such as the conceivability argument and the knowledge argument, better than materialism. While then Russellian monism has certain affinities with materialism, dualism and idealism, it avoids the most serious challenges for these approaches and we therefore have a good reason toview it as a self-standing and promising approach to phenomenal consciousness

Footprints in the Mud of Agadem: Eastern Niger’s way towards the Anthropocene

    Get PDF
Petrified footprints of now extinct rhinos and those of humans in the mud of the former lake Agadem may symbolise the beginning of an epoch dominated by humans. How could such a “local” Anthropocene be defined? In eastern Niger, two aspects seem particularly important for answering this question. The first is the disappearance of the addax in the context of the megafauna extinction. The second is the question how the “natural” environment may be conceived by the local Teda where current Western discussions highlight the “hybridity” of space

Descola’s Model Of Religion and Nature Examined: “Ontologies” in the Matobo Hills of Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
Philippe Descola suggested a scheme to enumerate dispositions to nature in such a way as to take into account non-Western practices that tend to be overshadowed by the dominance of naturalism. He also deployed this scheme to account for other religious types in the world, which in the same manner tend to be obscured by Western Christianity. This article examines Descola’s ontological scheme in the light of the case of the Mwali cult in the Matobo Hills World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe. Data gathered through a protracted period of participant observation and interviews in Matobo Hills shows that instead of the fourfold scheme Descola proposes, his reference to incarnation and figuration is a more promising avenue in an attempt to account for religious forms and the various ways humans relate to their environments
