Následující studie si klade za cíl postihnout myšlenkový vývoj dvou příslušníků „hledající generace“ intelektuálně a politicky dospívající ve 40. letech 19. století. Sleduje reflexi sociální otázky dvou vyučených knihtiskařů, novinářů a v revoluci i politiků Stephana Borna (1824–1898) a Karla Scherzera (1821–1903). The following study aims to capture the thought development of two members of the “seeking generation” coming of age intellectually and politically in the 1840s. The study traces the reflection on the social question of two skilled printers, journalists and, in the Revolution, politicians, Stephan Born (1824–1898) and Karl Scherzer (1821–1903). The study is based on the assumption that the social question became one of the central themes of the Central European public sphere shortly before 1848, which contributed to a large extent to the concretization of the content of the forming political ideologies. In a contemporary context, the views on the social question of the two actors in the years 1845–1849, when the topic was intensively addressed, are traced and analysed. The different stages of their lives and intellectual development in the period are analysed in chronological order. In the first part is devoted to their family background and intellectual resources, in the second part their first attempts at journalistic reflection on the social question are traced, and in the third part their views and fates in the revolution, when both stood at the forefront of workers’ organizational efforts

One of the subfields of economic history refers to prices. This article presents the toilsome means of reconstructing the statistical series required for studying the evolution of grain prices in the Lower Danube ports in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Recent research has allowed the identification of several sources which support the analysis of the sinusoidal curves of the price of Romanian wheat and corn traded in Moldavia and Wallachia

Ponds in the Perspective of Environmental History. From General Questions to Selected Examples from the Saxe-Lauenburg Estates

Rybníky jsou jedním z tradičních témat české historiografie, avšak dosud byly studovány zejména z hospodářského hlediska, méně pak také jako součást kulturní krajiny. Předkládaná studie se snaží téma uchopit z pohledu environmentálních dějin, díky nimž lze využít bohaté badatelské tradice a zároveň tematizovat nové otázky spojené s vodním hospodářstvím, prevencí rizik spojených s vodou a zacházením s rybami. Stranou není ponechána ani problematika údržby rybníků a jejich okolí, zejména břehů a náhonů.Ponds are one of the traditional themes of Czech historiography, but they have been studied so far mainly from an economic point of view and less so as part of the cultural landscape. The presented study attempts to approach the topic from the perspective of environmental history, which makes it possible to take advantage of the rich tradition of scholarship and at the same time to address new issues related to water management, prevention of water-related risks and the treatment of fish. The issue of maintenance of ponds and their surroundings, especially banks and dams, is not left aside

Sponsored or Autogestive Materialisation of Space: Urban Informality in Harare, Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
Urban spaces have been centres of social struggles and transformation the world over. With reference to selected urban informal settlements in Zimbabwe, the present article draws inspiration from Henry Lefebvre’s (1991) “autogestion” thesis and examines the extent to which urban spaces have been appropriated and materialised in order to cope with the emerging urban poly-crises, particularly a shortage of land for residential purposes in Harare. The study on which this article is based sought to establish the extent to which both the genesis and the persistence of informal settlements exemplified either a sponsored or the agential appropriation and materialisation of urban spaces. The article observes that what seemed to be “anarchistic” tendencies of informality and irregularity were actually the product of a systematic appropriation and materialisation by various actors for both economic and political expedience

Religion, Politics, and Society: The Role of Political Islam in the Sudanese Revolution of December 2018 and Its Aftermath

    Get PDF
December 2018 marked a new direction in Sudan’s political landscape as thousands of people revolted against President Omar al-Bashir and the Islamist regime that had ruled the country since 1989. Under authoritarian rule, Sudan suffered from genocide, war crimes, human rights violations and economic stagnation. As a result, Sudanese opposition groups organised demonstrations in 2018 to protest repression and demand change. This revolution galvanised unprecedented support from a wide variety of socio-cultural groups across the country. Protestors together with the army succeeded in ousting President al-Bashir from power in April 2019, setting in motion a process for political change in Sudan. This article analyses the practices performed by protestors in 2018 and 2019 and examines the social-cultural, political and religious dimensions of the Sudanese revolution. It also explores how the revolution’s protagonists contested the role of political Islam and how its antagonists reaffirmed their Islamo-political ideology in counter-revolutionary activities. The discussion also includes a violent atmosphere of the current war, which erupted in April 2023

Hopes and Realities: Local Perspectives on Participation in Community-Based Tourism

    Get PDF
Tourism development has been promoted as an alternative major source of income for countries and local communities. This perspective has further underscored local communities as critical stakeholders in tourism development. As such, community-based tourism gained momentum as a viable community participation approach for sustainable tourism development. However, even though community participation is said to be critical in sustainable tourism development, relatively little is known about how locals perceive community-based tourism as an alternative for sustainable livelihood, let alone the kind of local participation expected. The purpose of this article is to determine how the Mmadinare community in Botswana perceives community-based tourism and their own participation. The radical empowerment theory provides a theoretical framework. A qualitative multiple-case study approach using semi-structured interviews and focus groups was applied to gather data. The findings suggest that, in reality, community participation in tourism initiatives remains a challenge attributed to the lack of funding, a lack of capacity building, the limited involvement in decision-making platforms, the low awareness level of tourism development, and an unsuitable policy framework
