Obrtna svoboda na zatožni klopi: Konservativni nazori o obrtništvu v drugi polovici 19. stoletja na Slovenskem

The proclamation in 1859 of the right to practice trades freely triggered off a wave of discontent with the new circumstances that rapidly gained momentum amongst the craftsmen. This engendered the fight against the liberal laws on practicing crafts, which soon became one of the cornerstones of the conservative principles of the time. Although the general state of affairs in the trades sector was in reality far less critical than depicted at the time, the majority of the population believed that the more liberal regulations would inevitably lead to the demise of craftsmanship. The conservatives stubbornly wanted to impede the current of events through reforms and by trying to re-establish the old estate society (based on guilds) in a modernised form. Thus, their first demand was that only those who had learned a trade could become craftsmen, and that each craftsman must be a member of a craft co-operative - which were to have considerable jurisdiction within the field of craftsmanship.

The article presents six poetic texts, written in the Slovene language in the period from the death of Maria Teresa (1780) to the first fall of Napoleon (1814). The texts, all of which are anonymous versifications, are very different in style and quality, and cover quite a wide range of themes - from a panegyric on the ruler to a severe criticsm of the society of the times, the policies implemented by the emporer, and even his personality. The poems were written by the "conservative" part of the clergy and perhaps in part also by members of the laity. Due to their predominantly "improper" content, four of them were never published and were disseminated only in handwritten form. Up until now, only two of these poems were published, one of these two being a pamphlet against Enlightenment and Janseism. In it, the Slovene word for "enlightened" is mentioned for the first time.V prispevku je predstavljenih šest pesniških besedil, napisanih v slovenskem jeziku v času od smrti Marije Terezije (1780) do prvega Napoleonovega padca (1814).

In the waves of industrialisation during the second half of the 19• century, craftsmanship underwent farreaching changes. Unlike the other craftsmen in the Slovene lands, the craftsmen of Ljubljana mostly complained about the competition offered them by the craftwork of prisoners in forced labour workshops and prisons. At that time, though, forced labour was considered the most important means of correction for various »labour shirking« marginal groups. This basic opposition between the economical interests of the craftsmen and the public interest of ensuring correctional means for prisoners could only be solved by limiting forced labour to those branches of the economy in which it did not offer any direct competition to the craftsmen.V drugi polovici 19. stoletja je obrt pod udarci industrializacije doživljala globoke spremembe.
