Capturing the Sun: Solarpunk and the Elite Capture of Imagination

No full text
The climate emergencies of the last few years are making increasingly clear that unless the destructive and exploitative structures that support modern standards of living are dismantled and transformed, the future shall be a very hot and desolate one. Science fiction has offered a venue to reflect and envision possible futures in ways that engage our imagination and stimulate technological innovation. We argue that imagination can be understood as a collective capability that supports forms of resistance and resilience. This framing enables us to examine the consequence of the existence of power asymmetries, which may distort the potential of imagination to be a source of transformative change. To make our case, we reflect on solarpunk as a contemporary art and activism movement that envisions hopeful futures of ecological living. We argue that, as a subversive imaginary, solarpunk may be affected by processes of elite capture that could stifle its radical potential, particularly in relation to its visual identity. By reflecting on two emblematic cases, we illustrate how imagination can be captured in ways that damage its political potential. Our contribution shows that even well-intentioned or apparently innocuous uses of forms of imagination and imaginaries can have reactionary political consequences that normalize and neutralize narratives in support of radical change. Analyzing the risk of capture of sustainable future imaginaries such as solarpunk is relevant for the study of the multiple narratives, visual, literary, and academic, that are at play in public debates on the sustainability transition and climate change mitigation and adaptation, and their political consequences. The climate emergencies of the last few years are making increasingly clear that unless the destructive and exploitative structures that support modern standards of living are dismantled and transformed, the future shall be a very hot and desolate one.

Abstract – The paper is based on Tolkien’s novel “Lord of the Rings”, which in the framework of the project \u27SUPER Orientation and Tutoring Pathways to Promote University and Professional Success\u27 (POT- 2017-2018) formed the basis for the realization of an orientation pathway aimed at high school students. The workshop path investigated personal and educational biographies, life trajectories and awareness of future choices. The theme of the “journey” was the leitmotif of the course, declined through the character of Frodo, who is forced to abandon the comforts of his life to embark on a journey that will lead him to get lost both outside and inside himself, to re-orient himself and to seek new paths to follow. Orientation emerges, therefore, as a rhizomatic process in which to experience the formative value of stumbling and error, in which to lose oneself and find oneself in order to reach a “middle ground” from which to continue the journey.

The essay presents the developments of research on the well-being of secondary school students. Analyses confirm the factorial structure of the construct, with a Well-Being factor, including six scales, and two anxiety factors, General Anxiety and Test Anxiety. In addition analyses of variance highlight significant differences with respect to kind of school, self-perceived performance, gender, and feeling part of a minority. It emerges that students with a migrant background and those who believe they have a low performance live the school experience with discomfort, with particular reference to dimensions such as sense of protection, consideration, test anxiety and class cohesion. Along with the questionnaire the WHO-5 scale was administered. It correlates positively with the Wellbeing scale and negatively with the two Anxiety scales and about 61% of the students score below 13 on this scale, which suggests the need for further investigation.

No full text
The paper aims to explore the fruitful reflections developed by Umberto Eco, between the 1960s (Apocalittici e integrati) and the 1980s, concerning the contemporary media proliferation and the social fragmentation of cultural tastes. The contemporary notions of remediation (Bolter, Grusin) and post-mediality are anticipated in Eco’s essays. The essay focuses on two contemporary forms of audiovisual media reception, i.e. the aesthetics of delay developed by Laura Mulvey and the slow-motion video-installations by Douglas Gordon: these forms of media reception re-mediate a film pre-existent, and they encourage new interactive cultural habits of media reception.

The digital technologies that pervade our daily lives - artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) - present themselves to us first and foremost as “new”. However, the promises these technologies hold out to us, the desires we hope to fulfil by resorting to them, the imagery they powerfully nurture, and the discourses that narrate them are by no means new. On the contrary, they are rooted in the ground that for millennia has been concretely experienced by human communities in the various experiences of the sacred, the magical and the supernatural, worked far and wide by mythologies, religions and ideologies, and formulated into concepts and dogmas by theological and even political reflection. The contribution aims to examine some case studies in which the application of new image production technologies reveals the theological background of AI, VR and AR, in the dialectic of disenchantment/re-enchantment of experience.

Resurrezione digitale: Apocalissi e integrazione

No full text
The article interweaves a semiotic analysis of digital ‘resurrection’ technologies with a framework inspired by Umberto Eco’s seminal work Apocalittici e integrati [partial English translation: Apocalypse postponed]. Through this lens, the article explores the polarized reception of digital ‘resurrection’ technologies, akin to Eco’s dialectical categorization of cultural phenomena into apocalyptic criticisms and integrated embrace. By examining the deepfake technology that ‘resurrected’ Joaquin Oliver, a victim of the Parkland school shooting (February 14, 2018), the article delves into the societal and ethical implications of such technologies, echoing Eco’s exploration of mass media’s impact on culture. The article navigates between the apocalyptic view, which warns of the dangers and ethical dilemmas posed by blurring the lines between authenticity and artificiality, and the integrated perspective, which sees potential in leveraging technology for social advocacy and emotional engagement. Through the juxtaposition of Charles S. Peirce’s spiritual notion of immortality and traditional Christian beliefs in physical resurrection, the analysis reveals a contemporary battleground of ideology, where the semiotic implications of digital ‘resurrection’ reflect broader cultural tensions between innovation and tradition. Ultimately, the article posits semiotics as a vital discipline for dissecting the nuanced layers of meaning and impact behind digital ‘resurrection’, mirroring Eco’s call for a critical examination of cultural phenomena within the modern technological landscape.
