Is the future of news in the Metaverse? A social semiotic analysis of the virtual world of the Expresso newspaper
Full text linkEste estudo examina criticamente o fenómeno do metaverso numa perspetiva semiótica social, com foco no jornal português Expresso e na inauguração de um novo espaço virtual no âmbito da celebração do seu 50.º aniversário. O estudo explora a forma como o Expresso se representa no metaverso, pretendendo descodificar os principais recursos semióticos e os seus significados potenciais, assim como refletir criticamente sobre as implicações sociopolíticas da presença de órgãos de comunicação social em ambientes digitais imersivos. Em particular questiona-se a extensão da novidade tecnológica, estabelecendo-se comparações com mundos virtuais anteriores, como o Second Life. Os resultados destacam que o espaço metaverso do Expresso oferece experiências multimodais que produzem discursos retrospetivos e prospetivos que vão além do consumo tradicional e online de notícias. Essas experiências incluem marcadores de modalidade que assinalam a identidade e a história da marca e novos recursos semióticos interativos que (re)constroem o significado de objetos e práticas, como o quiosque de venda de jornais e a leitura de notícias. Contudo, as representações digitais dos avatares introduzem incertezas em relação ao perfil e às características da audiência do Expresso, sendo que o limitado aproveitamento das potencialidades participativas sugere uma continuação do controlo jornalístico convencional sobre os discursos noticiosos em espaços digitais.This study critically examines the phenomenon of the metaverse from a social semiotic perspective, focusing on the Portuguese newspaper Expresso and the inauguration of a new virtual space in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The study explores how Expresso represents itself in the metaverse, aiming to decode the primary semiotic resources and their potential meanings, as well as to critically reflect on the sociopolitical implications of the presence of media outlets in immersive digital environments. Specifically, it questions the extent of the technological novelty by drawing comparisons with previous virtual worlds, such as Second Life. The findings highlight that the Expresso metaverse space offers multimodal experiences that produce retrospective and prospective discourses that go beyond traditional and online news consumption. These experiences include modality markers that signal the brand’s identity and history and new interactive semiotic resources that (re)construct the meaning of objects and practices, such as the newsstand and news reading. However, the digital representations of avatars introduce uncertainties regarding the profile and characteristics of Expresso’s audience and the limited use of participatory potentials suggests a continuation of conventional journalistic control over news discourses in digital spaces

The history and ‘stories’ of photography books in Portugal analysed through the lens of specialised critics
Full text linkContribuir para o conhecimento mais aprofundado e crítico dos livros de fotografia publicados, em Portugal, nos últimos 50 anos, é a proposta desta obra, que analisa 88 publicações, no contexto da época em que foram criadas. Dividido em sete capítulos temáticos, o inventário proposto por um conjunto de investigadores ligados aos estudos de fotografia começa com referências editoriais do pré-25 de Abril e leva o leitor por uma viagem de publicações até ao presente, em áreas tão diversas como os fotolivros que reportam o 25 de Abril e as mudanças sociais ou políticas da época à fotografia mais poética, artística e concetual.To contribute to a deeper and more critical knowledge about the photography books published in Portugal over the last 50 years is the purpose of this book, which contextualises and analyses 88 publications in the context of the period in which they were created. Divided into seven thematic chapters, the inventory proposed by a group of researchers linked to photography studies begins with editorial references from pre-25 April and takes the reader on a journey of publications up to the present day, in areas as diverse as photo books that report on 25 April and the social and political changes of the time to more poetic, artistic and conceptual photography
Educação em Relações Públicas: competências valorizadas pelos profissionais em Portugal
Full text linkTaking into account the changes brought about by digital transformation and social networks, as well as the generational differences in pre-university education, this study aims to identify and analyze the competences valued by professionals in Portugal, especially those related to recent graduates. Through a content analysis of 87 interviews, the existing and predominant competences in the country were identified and compared with those mentioned in the existing literature. The results highlight the predominance of general competences, with an emphasis on those related to communication and digital content. These echo the reflections of Margarida Kunsch, Kate Fitch and Jacquie L\u27Etang, suggesting that in spite of the local dimention of the study, it is in line with global trends in the field. This frame of reference can guide curriculum development and stimulate reflection on public relations education.Tendo em consideração as mudanças potenciadas pela transformação digital e pelas redes sociais, juntamente com as diferenças geracionais na formação pré-universitária, este estudo visa identificar e analisar as competências valorizadas pelos profissionais em Portugal, especificamente as referentes a recém-formados. Através da análise de conteúdo de 87 entrevistas, identificam-se as competências que são predominantemente valorizadas no país, em comparação com as mencionadas na literatura existente. Os resultados enfatizam a predominância de competências de âmbito geral, dando destaque a capacidades comunicacionais e às que se referem a competências relacionadas com conteúdos digitais. Nestes ecoam as reflexões de Margarida Kunsch, Kate Fitch e Jacquie L’Etang, sugerindo que, embora o estudo seja local, os resultados estão alinhados com tendências globais na área. Este quadro de referência pode orientar o desenvolvimento curricular e estimular reflexões sobre a educação em Relações Públicas
Digital communication of community pharmacies in Guarda
Full text linkA comunicação digital pode ser um elo entre as farmácias comunitárias e o público, permitindo aumentar os seus conhecimentos em saúde. O objetivo deste trabalho foi a análise da comunicação digital das farmácias comunitárias do distrito da Guarda. Para isso foram analisados os perfis dos únicos oito estabelecimentos deste tipo com presença nas redes sociais Instagram e Facebook, em dois períodos distintos, em dezembro de 2022 e em janeiro de 2023, em que se avaliaram conteúdos transmitidos e interações com o público. Em todas as situações se verificou pouca atividade: poucos ou nenhuns posts, sem agenda definida e sem calendário de conteúdos. Durante a época pré-natalícia a informação transmitida foi essencialmente relacionada com dermofarmácia. Assim, denota-se que a comunicação em saúde, por esta via, é ainda débil, sendo pouco significativa na assimilação de conteúdos por parte dos utentes.Digital communication can be a link between community pharmacies and the public, allowing them to increase their health knowledge. The aim of this study was to analyze the digital communication of community pharmacies in the district of Guarda. To this end, the profiles of eight establishments on the social networks Instagram and Facebook were analyzed in two different periods, in December 2022 and in January 2023, in which transmitted content and interactions with the public were evaluated. In all situations there was little activity: few or no posts, no set agenda and no content calendar. During the season preceding Christmas, the information transmitted was essentially related to dermatopharmacy. Thus, it appears that health communication in this way is still weak, with little significance in the assimilation of content by users

This article compiles theoretical and empirical contributions, especially in the political sphere, and provides a brief contextualisation of infotainment, describing its conceptual and characteristic aspects. It also discusses its main effects, identifying some of their criticisms and virtues.O infotainment constitui uma das estratégias mediáticas mais utilizadas para captar a atenção do público e o levar a consumir notícias que o informem e entretenham. Através de uma compilação de estudos teórico-empíricos, sobretudo na área política, este artigo traça uma breve contextualização do infotainment, descrevendo os seus aspetos concetuais e caracterizadores. Contributo da Inteligência Artificial para classificação de imagem em estudos de perfusão do miocárdio: uma revisão sistemática
Full text linkIntrodução – Os métodos de Inteligência Artificial (IA) como o deep learning (DL) e, em particular, as convolutional neural networks (CNN) caracterizam-se por executar tarefas que normalmente requerem cognição humana. Nos estudos de perfusão do miocárdio, os sistemas de IA têm assumido importância como ferramenta auxiliar aos especialistas de medicina nuclear, particularmente para classificação de imagem no âmbito da doença arterial coronária (DAC). Objetivos – Avaliar o contributo dos métodos de DL para classificação de imagem em estudos de perfusão do miocárdio. Métodos – Realizou-se uma revisão sistemática, onde foram incluídos 11 artigos, pesquisados nas bases de dados PubMed, Web of Science e Scopus. Incluíram-se estudos publicados nos últimos cinco anos, que procuram avaliar o desempenho dos métodos de DL para classificação de imagem em estudos de perfusão do miocárdio em contexto de DAC. Resultados – Dos 11 artigos incluídos, 82% utilizaram CNN e os restantes 18% aplicaram outros métodos de DL. A arquitetura Red-Green-Blue Convolutional Neural Network (RGB-CNN) demonstrou maior aplicabilidade, correspondendo a 45% das CNN utilizadas e apresentou melhor desempenho (AUC=94,58%). As restantes arquiteturas utilizadas corresponderam a 11% cada (CNN 2D; Inception V3; ResNet152V2; CNN Hand-Crafted e ResNet50). Conclusão – Os métodos de IA, nomeadamente o DL com recurso a CNN, demonstram ser benéficos para a classificação de imagens de perfusão do miocárdio, com potencial de aplicação no diagnóstico precoce de DAC, embora com necessidade de investigação futura.Introduction – Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods such as deep learning (DL) and, in particular, convolutional neural networks (CNN), are characterized by performing tasks that normally require human cognition. In myocardial perfusion studies, AI systems have assumed importance as an ancillary tool for nuclear medicine (NM) specialists, particularly for image classification in the context of coronary artery disease (CAD). Objectives – Evaluate DL methods\u27 contribution to image classification in myocardial perfusion studies. Methods – A systematic review was carried out, which included 11 articles, searched in databases, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Studies published in the last five years that seek to evaluate the performance of DL methods for image classification in myocardial perfusion studies in the context of CAD were included. Results – Eleven articles were included in the systematic review, where 82% used CNN and the remaining 18% applied other DL methods. The Red-Green-Blue Convolutional Neural Network (RGB-CNN) architecture demonstrated greater applicability, corresponding to 45% of the CNN used, and presented better performance (AUC=94.58%). The remaining architectures corresponded to 11% each (CNN 2D; Inception V3; ResNet152V2; CNN Hand-Crafted and ResNet50). Conclusion – AI methods, namely DL using CNN, prove to be beneficial for the classification of myocardial perfusion images, with potential application in the early diagnosis of CAD, although with the need for further investigation
