After thoroughly reviewing Georg Simmel’s work, we aim to take part in a discussion that aroused within German sociology about the alleged dis- agreement between two research lines: the differentiation theory and the one on inequality. Through the examination of two forms of differentia- tion that are present in Simmel’s texts — that is, the role differentiation and the autonomization of monetary economy — we will show in which points the poles differentiation-inequality are connected and where are separated. The hypothesis that will guide us is that an interpretation of social strati'cation in a cultural key can be found in Simmel. In this sense, we try to address some possible af'nities of the perspective of the sociolo- gist from Berlin with the strati'cation theories of Karl Marx and Pierre Bourdieu. Then we will try to consider how the concept of social class, converted by Marx into an inescapable tool of sociological analysis, has followed its trajectory in the strati'cation approach that can be recon- structed from Simmel's work

Well-ordered societies and John Rawls' Projects in A Theory of Justice and Political Liberalism
The article deals with the differences between the social ideals found in John Rawls’s two main works, the well-ordered societies of A Theory of Justice and Political Liberalism. The question is whether, in view of the differences – and, in particular, the fact that, unlike A Theory of Justice, the well-ordered society of Political Liberalism is characterized by the possible disagreement over the most reasonable conception of justice – Rawls’s projects in the two works are compatible. The conclusion is affirmative, despite the fact that some of the arguments used in A Theory of Justice in favor of justice as fairness and against rival conceptions of justice (in particular utilitarianism) did not survive the transition to Political Liberalism. In the end, the article raises doubts about the desirability of insisting, as part of recent Rawlsian literature, on the debate on institutional arrangements (such as property-owning democracy liberal socialism) whose realization depends on the general acceptance of a particular conception of justice like the one advocated by Rawls in A Theory of Justice.O artigo se ocupa com as diferenças entre os ideais sociais encontrados na duas principais obras de John Rawls, as sociedades bem ordenadas de A Theory of Justice e Political Liberalism.

The invention of self in relation to the Other: Reflections on the difference between people

From this perspective, I underscore the importance of the discoveryof the native people of the New World for the development of the montaigniancriticism of the human condition, bringing to light the relevance of his thinking inthe present reflection of colonization and decolonization.

Mots-clés : Montaigne, Diderot, Rousseau, Lévi-Strauss, cannibales, matérialismeanthropologiqueThe essay « Of Cannibals » has dominated Montaigne Studies in thepast 40 years. Postcolonialism and the ethical turn, allied to romantic consumerismof the exotic, found there a treasure trove. But Montaigne finds in the cannibal’sethos not a true heteronomy but familiar classical models. Politically the essay ishumorously subversive but ends by postulating an abyss separating Amerindiansfrom Europeans. To study historically the essay’s pivotal role, I go back to Rousseau’s‘auto-ist’ anthropology and to Lévi-Strauss’ spiritual affinity to it.Both these thinkersfall far short of Montaigne’s essayistique mode of thought. In contrast, Diderot, athinker of the immanent, in his materialism, dialogism, and humor presents in his Supplement a precise ecological analysis of the exotic, exempt from ontological and political fantasies. I show that Diderot was the closest to Montaigne, andthat, echoing each other, both offer us a model for a materialist and self-consciousethnography of a serious vintage.

Montaigne, os canibais e todos os outros do mundo: Montaigne, the cannibals and everyone else in the world
A significant part of the analysis of the chapter “On the Cannibals”,Book I of the Essays, properly highlights Montaigne’s unique approach to therecent contacts of Europeans with Native Americans. We regard Montaigne’sskeptical perspective as responsible for such a peculiarity, whose ultimate aim isless about the description of indigenous life and more about the moral reflectionthat such a way of life inspires. We emphasize: (1) the polarizations and inversionsbetween the senses of savage and barbarian and the civilized European - who, after all, is the barbarian?; (2) how, in the course of these resignifications, wecan seize the relation between nature and artifice; which leads us to (3) theperception of the cultural diversity and the judgments about them, that is, therelevance of the chapter “On the Cannibals” to what today is called ethnocentrism.
Keywords : Montaigne; cannibals; moral; cultural diversity.

Os Tupinambás no limite da razão: Tupinambás at the limit of reason
Brazil was bestowed by Montaigne’s gaze on a quick but profound analysis of the Tupinambá people. The philosopher not only praises this indigenous people in many aspects, but points out their immense resemblance to the European people in both barbaric customs and good virtues. He proposes to his fellow citizens a self-examination of their own habits, so that a humanized observation of what they once understood as savage may be instituted. It presents, from this, a sense of humanity guided by the conception of nature, which strategically excludes the artificial customs, but, at the same time, enables the manifestation of otherness. The result of this will be the possibility of returning the gaze to the other, while being really existing, now with the softened judgment regarding the influence of their own customs: an anthropological view.

Montaigne et le Nouveau Monde : le lieu du Temps: Montaigne and the New World: the Place of the Time
More than a geographical area, New World constitutes for Montaigne an experience of time. Indians are seen from a great distance but are also close to the Antique from the point of view of values. Interference between spatial and historical distances allows projection of the problematic topic of modernity into New World’s representation. New Land becomes a kind of theoretical laboratory for questioning the present time and producing a conscious reading of time.
