Gender, Power and Technology: Is Trolling a Man’s Sport?

    Get PDF
With the rise of social media, centuries-old norms surrounding the hatred of women have resurfaced in a manner that can seem more intense than ever before. The increased interconnectivity of our modern world means that it can be almost impossible for women online to avoid vitriolic abuse. This essay analyses the phenomenon of online trolling, highlighting its distinctly gendered nature, and emphasizing the idea that misogyny is certainly not dead. The cultural norms of online communication differ profusely from in-person interactions, and thus the disinhibition effect allows for people to behave in otherwise unacceptable ways

An Evolving Conception of Sexual Difference: Evaluating Thomas Laqueur’s Theory on the Emergence of a ‘two-sex model’ in the Eighteenth Century.

    Get PDF
In 1990, historian Thomas Laqueur published his pivotal ‘one-sex, two-sex’ model. The theory outlines that before the 18th century, it was believed that there was but one sex. The relationship between the male and female sex was vertical, with the female being an inverted, less perfect version of the male sex. While the theory made waves in the sphere of gender history, Laqueur’s model has major theoretical flaws. It is built solely upon evidence from the ‘great men of Western canon medicine’, omitting female and homosexual voices. It stitches together pre-existing contradictory theories, dismisses important contemporary revelations regarding sex difference, and misrepresents the change in perception of sex that occured in the 18th century

    Neurodivergence in AFAB Individuals

Since their first conceptualizations in the early 20th century, autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder have been perceived as predominantly, or even exclusively male conditions (Kreiser & White, 2013). Over recent years, support has grown for the hypothesis that this ratio is caused not by differences in prevalence but rather, differences in likelihood of diagnosis, with AFAB people being frequently under- and misdiagnosed. This is in part due to the difference in presentation of ASD and ADHD. The causes behind the underdiagnosis of AFAB individuals as well as their unique presentation of symptoms are discussed

Job Turnover and the Policy Response in the COVID-19 Era

    Get PDF
This paper examines job destruction and job creation over the course of 2019 and 2020. The detailed analysis, of both employers and employees, provides insights into the labour market impact arising from a period of unprecedented economic lockdowns and subsequent reopenings. Variation in job destruction rates during lockdown suggests more targeted supports by employer size may be warranted in future, particularly in the hospitality sector. Conversely, sectors exhibiting strong labour demand in 2020 have limited overlap with the sectoral profile of current Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) recipients, indicating that, absent a full and sustained reopening, targeted job-matching policies for the unemployed may meet with limited success. Younger employees had the highest rate of job destruction during lockdown but, notably, also the highest rate of job creation during reopening phases. Some groups, in aggregate, experienced no pandemic-related job turnover, including export-facing employers and employees earning average incomes or higher. In addition, the paper reviews the role played by the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) and finds that the policy successfully prevented job destruction in the initial months of the pandemic. The analysis in the paper is made possible by exploiting the potential of a new, population-wide and real-time tax reporting system from the Revenue Commissioners

"Schools are like old fashioned factories, and what they produce is gendered individuals"

    Get PDF
Education plays a pivotal role in the way in which gender identities are con- structed and maintained. Aside from the immediate family unit, schools and the education system are one of the earliest places for the socialisation of children; as well as being one of the first places where children learn about and enact the different gender roles. Durkheim believed that the purpose of education “is to create adults out of children who reflect the ideals of their society”. A large part of these ideals are based around the socially constructed differences between the genders and the separate roles which men and women are expected to carry out. In this paper, I will attempt to outline and explore the myriad of ways in which education and the school environment influence the behaviour and attitudes of students and pro- mote the creation of their gender identities

The Harmful Effects of Sex Robots

    Get PDF
Human fascination in creating the ideal lover is long-standing and has manifested itself today in the development of sex robots. The use and advancement of this technology is both anti-women, in its portrayal of the female body, and anti-human, in its fostering of anti-social behaviour. This article will examine the potential negative consequences of such machines and attempt to refute arguments supporting the integration of sex robotics into our everyday live. It ultimately concludes that sex robots are damaging to women and society by allowing the user to engage in consent-less sex with an over-sexualised representation of the female body
