William II called Rufus – William the Conqueror‘s third-born – was king of England from 1084 until his unexpected death in 1100. Being an excellent captain and a brave warrior, William Rufus succeeded in strengthen the English kingdom. He spent most of his regency in war against his older brother, and in direct conflict with the Church. His name will be remembered by the History, especially through the annals written immediately after his death, as one of the worst kings of England. In the 11th and 12th centuries, William Rufus became the example of everything a sovereign should not be: he missed every aspect of the kingship. He did not show nor gracefulness nor justice nor capability of government. His memorial image was created by ecclesiasticals that well remembered and abhorred his behavior towards the Church. In this paper I will briefly reconstruct the steps through which authors such as William of Malmesbury and Orderic Vitalis described William II. Moreover, I will analyse John of Salinsbury, Gerald of Wales and Walter Map’s works of the 12th century. They present the portrait of the evil sovereign as a comparison tool for the contemporaneity – he became an exemplum and his death emerged as “divine justice”.Guglielmo II detto Rufo, terzogenito di Guglielmo il Conquistatore, fu re d’Inghilterra dal 1084 al 1100, anno della sua improvvisa morte.
The constitution of a new dynasty with the proclamation of D. João I of Portugal led to the creation of various propagandistic discourses. Portuguese historiography has only focused on the one created in his favor by his descendants, consecrated in the chronicle of Fernão Lopes. On the other hand, it has scarcely taken care of the constructed against it by the Castilian Trastámara who claimed the Portuguese throne under the rights of Beatriz of Portugal. Through the analysis of the discourse of the chronicles of Pedro López Ayala, the epistles of Fernando de Castilla, the documentation of the Castilian Chancellery and other instruments of power, such as the seal and the currency, we can not only observe the claims of the Trastámara and their non-recognition of the Avis dynasty, but also the construction of the image of D. João I of Portugal as an unworthy ruler by his personal conditions (barstardy and clergyman) and his style of governing in a traitorous, cowardly, hesitant, and opportunistic way. An image of the Portuguese sovereign radically different from that of the "good memory" and the "messiah of Lisbon" consecrated by the Portuguese sources, an alternative that appeared in the political discourse of the time.
Peter IV of Aragon, called “the Ceremonious”, wrote his chronicle under the inspiration of the case of James I of Aragon, the author of the Llibre dels feits. Nevertheless, the true leitmotiv which motivated him to do it was his act against the King of Majorca, James III, whom he deposed from the Crown of Majorca in 1342-1344, before bringing his life to an end in 1349. His drastic act forced him to justify his behavior in front of the public opinion and the European Kingdoms. In order to legitimate the deposition, in first place he subjected the Majorcan king to a judicial process under certain accusations, and after that he conceived a political discourse, whose main part was the historical account. In it, he explains the legal reasons of his proceeding, omitting all the details he wasn’t interest in explaining, at the same time that he gives big importance to the symbology, Eventually, his speech culminates by remarking the Catalan ownership of the reintegrated lands.
This article intends to articulate the concepts of border and intermediality crisscrossed by narrative. Intermediality as an artistic border offers a singular site to perform (to think and to exercise) exiles and migrations questioning within theatre. The imperfect overlap of geopolitic border and artistic border allows to renew the approach on narratives of de/territorialisation. We will begin by reflecting on physical borders and its dematerialisation towards conceptual borders. Afterwards, we will step forward to the theatre of the real. Being a dramaturgy between the actual and aesthetic fabrication we will suggest that middle place – a permeable border – is built through mediation, via narrative or technology and that it outputs remediation. As a basis for an applied study on contemporary dramaturgies, we will analyse the performance Moving People by Christiane Jatahy that addresses intermediality, fiction and expanded scene contrasting with Sanctuary by Brett Bailey. Both performances are rooted in the refugee condition which implies the negotiation of new regimes of visibility-invisibility, virtuality-reality not as polarisations but as a dialogue, where thresholds also blur.In short, we intend to suggest intermediality offers an oblique form of access to narratives of the real where simultaneity implies the loss of incompatibility between ontologic oppositions due to hybridisation and remediation.
The narrowing of the relationship between life and art in contemporary theater offers the opportunity for the actor to make his or her creation a journey in and of itself, discovering other ways of acting in the world. However, within a fictional context, this effort will be in vain without updating the perspectives of "character", "body", "action" and "scenic presence" formulated by the dramatic tradition. The article raises these questions through comments on a scenic experiment titled “Departures: where does this ticket lead me?”, created from a conference by Mia Couto and part of the performance “The Future by Half: Scenic Variations on the Same Conference” (2012). In it, the questions related to alterity raised by the Mozambican writer unfold in a device that challenged two actresses to find, in the same fictional matrix, always renewed logics and sensibilities. Ultimately, the experiment was an improvisation subject to ticket interference that was delivered to the actresses by an outside provocateur. The tickets contained precise and unusual tasks that should be performed on the scene, always in response to a partner's action or some casual event. Conditioning the achievement of something already established to something as yet unknown has destabilized the control relationship between the agent and the act - the mark of a logocentric subject - which created the conditions for the emergence of other and unsuspected ways of affecting and affect in that situation. It was verified that the "character" in that experiment, was only possible to be understood as the possibilities of the actress from an always renewed recognition of themselves, he other with whom they act, and the situation itself. In this context, “action” was approached as the effect and agency of a "body" that is provisionally constituted and which in turn becomes "present" only in the absence of a fixedly identified subject. This perspective of acting demanded changes, also, in the perceptive quality of the actresses, that allowed the break with the patterns established by the high excitement of our day to day, that narrow the human existence to a set of automated behavioral mechanisms. In this sense, the experiment with the tickets also points out ways for the elaboration of an ethical and political dimension for the actuation in the contemporaneity.O estreitamento das relações entre vida e arte no teatro contemporâneo oferece a oportunidade para o ator fazer da sua criação uma viagem para fora de si, descobrindo outros modos de agir no mundo.
This study aims to discuss the officers of arms and Portuguese heraldry as an aggregate of science, art and technique, that is, possessing symbolic meaning reflected through colours, figures and their organization in a coat of arms – according to heraldic rules. In this way, it would be possible to improve the image and use it as a statement of visual communication of a discourse of honor, deeply connected with medieval diplomacy. From this approach to heraldry and officers of arms, we will, on the one hand, suggest that the Crown conveyed ideological messages trough privileged means of self-representation; and, on the other, that the Portuguese foreign policy context and implicit thought becomes clearer.
Artistic relations between Portugal and Flandres through the Books of Hours preserved in Portugal.
Tese de Doutoramento em História da Arte Medieval, apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Junho de 2017. Orientação da Doutora Maria Adelaide Miranda, do Doutor Bernardo Vasconcelos e Sousa e do Doutor Dominique Vanwijnsberghe.
This thesis aims to show that Books of Hours played a central role in late medieval Portuguese society and in the relations with the main European royal houses. This study allowed us to retrace the path of some of these codices and confirm the prestige of Portugal among the main houses of the time, the enthusiastic reception of Flemish art by the Portuguese nobility, and its influence on the national production. Because the vast majority of these manuscripts have never been studied, we carried out a comprehensive survey of the Books of Hours, manuscripts, and loose folios currently preserved in Portugal, as well as a brief study of sixteen exemplars from foreign institutions, which are clearly linked to the Portuguese royal house. By systematically identifying and inventorying the works and by elaborating a critical reflection on the historiography of the topic and the specimens under analysis, we were able to build a corpus and identify the general features of this type of book, as well as the specific characteristics of the exemplars of Flemish origin
Garcia, the youngest son of Ferdinand of Castile (1038-1065) and Sancha of León (1038-1067), was given the kingdom of Galicia by his parents, when they splited their kingdom by their sons. Five years into his reign, he was captured and imprisoned by one of his elder brothers, Alfonso, king of León, who becomes king of Galicia in its brother’s place. The former king spent the rest of his life in prison until his death in 1090. The circumstances which led to Garcia's arrest and captivity were frequently debated among the 12th medieval Iberian Latin historiographers. However, it is in the 13th century that historians elaborate more solid justifications to make sense, not only Garcia's fate but also the anoumalous power transmission that took place. This paper analyses the arguments brought up by the works of several 12th and 13th century historiographers of western Iberia – conceeding special attention to Lucas de Tuy’s Chronicon Mundi and Rodrigo de Rada’s De rebus Hispaniae – to justify the fall of Garcia of Galicia. It aims at understanding the relation between the discursive mutations of this episode and the writers’ political and ideological conceptions.
