    No full text
On November 23, 1407, the premeditated murder of king Charles’ brother Louis d’Orléans by the henchmen of their cousin John of Burgundy puts the question of the tyrant and tyrannicide at the center of intellectual debates. Indeed, having confessed to ordering the crime, Jean sans Peur goes back on his statement and asks a team of theologians led by the Norman Jean Petit to prepare his defense. This justification is exposed to the public in 1408 and is based upon an argument taken to the jurist Cassius: vim vi repellere licet. Louis was a would-be tyrant, so his murder was both lawful and good. This assertion seems to be an echo of the debates surrounding tyranicide raging amoung the Italian humanists for half a century. Due to the refusal of confession, the royal justice is paralized; therefore the Justification by Jean Petit is all the more shocking. Faced with the inability of justice, Louis’ family is left with no choice but vengeance. The French humanists milieu, which brings together acknowledged and famous humanists such as Nicolas de Clamanges, Laurent de Premierfait and Alain Chartier, and academics tempted by this new intellectual movement, such as Pierre d’Ailly and Jean Gerson, revive the controversy by adapting it to the context: who can be call a tyrant? What is the difference between a tyrant and a legitimate king? Is it lawfull to kill the tyrant as to save the king? The most appropriate answer to these questions must be found because what is at stake is no less than the French kingdom survival.

The contemporary ecological crisis that has given rise to summits and debates, culminating in the recent international meetings organized by the United Nations COP (Conference of the Parties on Climate Change) and which has begun to inspire global government and business management policies, is probably a of the maximum expressions of the crisis of the urban imaginary, based on the centrality of human action and the separation between the subject and nature. The definitive crisis of this anthropocentric conception, which marked the philosophical, political and social tradition of the West, finds its origins in the new forms of connection possible after the diffusion of digital ecological networks, that is, in the various forms of connection of various types of surfaces ( Internet of Things) that allowed the transmission of information in real time in the network of a multitude of information, coming from all types of surfaces and substances, vegetables, animals and minerals. This innovation has triggered a widespread communication throughout the environment that has altered our relationship with the environment by creating info-ecologies, that is, complex reticular habitats that connect individuals and physical spaces to data networks and diverse substances. The urban form of the West is thus overcome, based on the anthropomorphism of space and its reification. To the urban landscapes succeed the info-ecologies and the connective networks, bearer of a new contractuality between individual, space and information.

Reframing Digital Practices in Mediated Public Open Spaces Associated with Cultural Heritage

This article addresses the relationship between digital media technologies (delivered via smartphones, tablets, wi-fi connections) and their use in public open spaces (parks, gardens, squares, plazas, streets, etc.). In the age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, digital technology is entering the context of the everyday appropriation of the urban environments. Due to the rapid development and increasing possibilities of ICTs for application in the public realm, digital tools challenge a better understanding of the consequences by social scientists and urban designers. This leads to questions about the many ways ICTs affect the use of public open space, the risks included as well as the degree to which these new, emergent, uses fit into the concept of a virtual society. This article focuses on the capacity of ICTs to transform our cities into more social places and contribute to more interesting and engaging ways to navigate and interact with public spaces. It is based on the European COST network CyberParks, in the framework of which several aspects of the relationship of ICTs with public spaces and urban design have been analysed. The results show that ICTs cause and enable innovative outdoor social practices, which provoke spatial and social experts to use them in policies, design and research, in order to produce responsive and inclusive urban spaces. Therefore, aspects such as promoting leisure and recreation, integrating social media and enabling association with heritage will be explored and discussed on the basis of examples already studied in three different countries (Serbia, Portugal and Cyprus). Cultural heritage can be used to influence positively the social cohesion, as it can be promoted in such a way that, instead of provoking tensions and division, would offer spaces of inclusion, increasing everyday experiences and provide a sense of belonging to socially excluded communities. This article addresses the relationship between digital media technologies (delivered via smartphones, tablets, wi-fi connections) and their use in public open spaces (parks, gardens, squares, plazas, streets, etc.). A dimensão do desassossego: Bernardo Soares, o menor, e a sua “epopeia pobre”

This essay is based on a judgement made by Alfredo Margarido in an essay published in the important issue no. 88 of Colóquio/Letras dedicated to Fernando Pessoa in 1985. Margarido’s essay was published on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Pessoa’ death – following the appearance of The Book of Disquiet edited by Jacinto Prado Coelho, with Maria Aliete Galhoz and Teresa Sobral Cunha (1982), and the subsequent 2nd International Congress of Pessoa’s Studies (Nashville, 1983). This paper tries to reconstitute and review a set of critical arguments which, in the Portuguese and Brazilian critical reception, immediately set out to minimize the Book and its Author, presenting them rather as by-products of Pessoa’s work.

    No full text
The songs by Martin Codax have been interpreted according to different, often incompatible, perspectives. The author discusses the most recent and relevant contributions, namely by William Paden. Then he tries to ascertain which musical traits in these cantigas might point to an earlier style of women's song symbolized by the “boyfriend” and related keywords. After invoking the impact of gender studies on the interpretation of the cantiga de amigo, as evaluated by Alan Deyermond, the author presents and discusses the different views on the style of the melodies voiced since their discovery a century ago. An excursus explores differences between cantigas II and III and the remaining, and the metrics of the latter, with reference to a recent work by Stephen Parkinson and Rip Cohen; a new musical edition is proposed for these two (and also, in passing, for cantiga V). Finally, those stylistic aspects that in the Vindel MS may betray an earlier tradition, in contrast to those that can be attributed to the artistic initiative of Galician jongleurs, are tentatively identified.O cancioneiro de Martin Codax tem suscitado posições interpretativas nem sempre conciliáveis entre si.

    No full text
In this paper we focus our attention on the study of a territory governed by the Order of Saint John in Andalusia at the end of the Middle Ages: Alcolea del Río, in the province of Seville (Spain). This town, due to its proximity to Guadalquivir river, was able to take advantage of this resource in order to improve its economic and demographic development, by constructing and using different groups of water mills. We study them in this paper.

    No full text
On 28 June 1412, as a result of the compromiso of Caspe’s sentence, the infante Ferdinand of Castile was proclaimed king of Aragon after two years of interregnum. Ferdinand’s potential needs to legitimise his right to the throne and his exercise of royal authority as king Martin I’s successor conducted to an spectacular propaganda apparatus. This paper aims to analyse the core principles of the symbolic language which was performed to this goal by king Ferdinand I of Aragon. This purpose is based on the study of the main public ceremonies that were led by the monarch during his brief reign (1412-1416), prominently royal entries in the major cities in the Aragonese monarchy and Coronation festivities at Zaragoza in February 1414.El 28 de junio de 1412, como consecuencia del Compromiso de Caspe, el infante D. Fernando de Castilla fue proclamado rey de Aragón tras dos años de interregno.
