The hierarchy of cereals by an ancient scientist in De alimentorum Facultatibus I: the properties of grain for bread making

    No full text
When approaching the nature of things, Galen of Pergamon tends to use an analytic process based on the relation between different elements interacting in a particular system. With respect to ancient eating habits and health, this way of collecting information and formulating hypotheses has a kind of potential for generating hierarchies and is attested to in De alimentorum facultatibus I, in which foodstuffs are evaluated considering the particular result expected on a subject’s metabolism. This paper aims to describe the manner by which a hierarchical construction is made in respect to the qualities of grains. In order to understand how such a method serves Galen’s science, it offers a systematization of his commentaries and notes on the different kinds of grains and their nutritional properties in the equation: human body condition + (cereal + type of processing) = body reaction

This article reviews the contribution of media institutions to modernity and its wider institutional arrangements. It will consider how this relationship has normally been conceived, even mythified, and then, in its second half, review how the institutions that we now call ‘media’ are, potentially, disrupting, even deranging, modernity’s arrangements in profound ways. The article will suggest that, under conditions of increased complexity and radically transformed market competition, the changing set of institutions we call ‘media’ demand a major reinterpretation of how modernity ‘works’ through institutional concentration. The first main section reviews in schematic terms the role which media institutions (the press, radio, television, film, but also infrastructural media such as the telegraph) played in the institutional development of modernity from the late 18th century, stabilising the circulation of information and contributing to the freedom associated with modernity, but in the course of this installing a ‘myth of the mediated centre’. The second section will review how this traditional settlement between media and modernity is now being deranged. This goes beyond the globalization of modernity and the complexification of culture landscapes through media and time-space compression. It is a matter, more fundamentally, of a change in the conditions under which media institutions exist and are able to ‘centralize’ communications flows. Today, communications are becoming centralised less through the production and circulation of elaborate media contents at/ from global/national centres throughout the social domain (funded through audience-based advertising or state subsidy) and more through the stimulation to/from everywhere of symbolic interactions within a global information space (the internet, and its related apparatus) funded by the collection and sale of data ‘exhaust’ generated by those interactions. The result, paradoxically, is likely to be an increasing destabilisation of many traditional institutions of modernity, and the normalisation of unfreedom through continuous surveillance, undermining the legitimacy of institutional arrangements on which modernity has conventionally relied.

Based on the essays collected in Estudos sobre a poesia de Fernando Pessoa (1958), this article analyzes the evolutionary journey of Adolfo Casais Monteiro’s critique of Fernando Pessoa, from his agreement with the parameters of presença as an evaluative principle to the confrontation with the critique of Gaspar Simões and the partial adoption of a new critical vocabulary, resulting from the contact with the theoretical work of Pessoa himself.

Assessment for Learning as a Means to Promote Students’ Writing Proficiency

    No full text
The present study, conducted as part of the practicum during my master’s degree in teaching English in the third cycle of basic education and secondary schooling, aimed to enhance students’ writing through formative assessment tools and practices. This entailed the use of rubrics, success criteria checklists, students’ self-assessment using rubrics, and teacher feedback through error correction codes, comments, and the writing of a second draft by students. The study was conducted during a 6 month period, and involved 21 eleventh-graders. As my research methodology, a small scale classroom-based action research study was implemented, which entailed a qualitative and quantitative approach to data collection. The data collection tools consisted of a teaching journal, questionnaires, and teacher and student assessment of the written tasks through the use of rubrics. The written tasks were an opinion essay and a letter of application. Results showed that students felt motivated to use the formative assessment tools implemented in class. They revealed an ability in self-assessing their work through the use of rubrics, and a capacity to correct their mistakes. The practices implemented in class promoted students’ writing proficiency of specific written tasks

The Other’s portrait and historical truth in classical authors and Portuguese 16th Century chroniclers

    No full text
A portrait of the Other can be seen throughout the literature of classical antiquity, from Homer to the Roman authors, in an implicit awareness that identity cannot exist without alterity. This is a core question in the Iliad, in the conflict that pitted Greeks against Trojans. It is also a recurring subject in the Odyssey, in the Other’s (Ulysses’) wanderings, from Troy to his return to Ithaca. The quest for the Golden Fleece also contemplates the confrontation between Argonauts and the arrival to Colchis. This issue is taken up in Greek historiography with Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon, but now with a focus on historical truth, with the internal conflict between Athenians and Spartans (Thucydides) and the external conflict between Athenians and Persians (Herodotus, Xenophon). In the same way that Virgil directs his attention to Carthage and Queen Dido in his epic poem the Aeneid, foreseeing a future conflict, the Punic Wars, Roman historiography, with Titus Livius, Sallust, and Julius Caesar’s memoirs of the conquest of Gaul, dedicate particular attention to the portrait of the Other as a counterpoint to the awareness of identity.Historical truth, in terms of heuristics (documentum) and exemplary Ciceronian pedagogy (monumentum), is, on the other hand, the main concern of Roman historiography, as a favored form of civic intervention to attain a national identity (res romana).Having inherited this methodological approach from Classical Antiquity, 16th century Portuguese chroniclers like João de Barros, Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, Gaspar Correia and Diogo do Couto, and others, link historiography sources to the issue of national identity and alterity. The objective of this paper is to examine how the 16th century Portuguese chroniclers assimilated Classical Antiquity, in an explicit and implicit way

Religious texts as a source of a contemporary study of Antiquity – linguistic interpretations of the Pyramid Texts and the Coffin Texts

    No full text
Religious writings are usually treated in the same way as mythological narratives. It is consistently forgotten that they express faith. They were testimonies of people’s beliefs. They were designed to verbalise transcendental reality – to express the Inexpressible. When one comprehends and digests these facts, a scholar is far better able to perceive the predicament, the arduousness of the scrutiny of this genre of written sources. While studying the written sources the image we would like to recapture is an image scattered in words and phrases, in language. It is embodied in language itself. Thus, the author of the paper scrutinised the world’s oldest religious texts – the Pyramid Texts and the Coffin Texts, against a backdrop of general remarks, to show the uniqueness and specificity of analysis and interpretation of this type of sources

A performance como movimento de contra-monumentalização: Um olhar sobre o trabalho Demythologise that History and Put it to Rest

    Get PDF
Concerns about spaces, and about the bodies that occupy them, are more and more becoming an unsettling thought shared by those who live in this moment of historical uneasiness. The History tends to turn itself into Histories and, following this evolution, also the spatial representations of this official narrative of the past, tend to be rethought. If a great deal of the attention of politicians, museologists, historians, and anthropologists, tends to recur on archival issues - their just or not, appropriation, what future to give to the spoils of the great archives and museums of Europe, etc. - sociologists, artists and activists have come to re-think other kind of memory, and file, public space. This article proposes to look at this counter-monumentalization movement, which we see emerging as a growing phenomenon in the artistic world, through an approach to the work of Márcio Carvalho and his project Demythologise that History and Put it to Rest, which the artist has been developing in the cities of Berlin and Lisbon since 2018.As preocupações sobre os espaços, e sobre os corpos que os ocupam, são desassossegos cada vez mais partilhados por quem vive neste momento de inquietações históricas.
