Dialogic literary gatherings in EFL: Fostering quality language learning through dialogic interaction
Dialogic literary gatherings (DLGs) are inclusive dialogic whole-class interaction activities that have proven to contribute to improving students’ academic achievement, as well as inclusion and social cohesion, and which can be transferred to any context (Flecha & INCLUD-ED, 2015). By stressing oral interaction as a means to learning and as learning itself, this short study investigates if the implementation of DLGs in a lower secondary EFL classroom in Portugal fosters the emergence of learning opportunities for quality language learning. A classroom observation method was applied, with data being analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results show that DLGs provide a number of varied learning opportunities which seem to increase with regular exposure to DLGs, and when a student plays the role of moderator. Further investigation is required on the impact of implementing DLGs in the EFL classroom
Ancient Egyptian Collections in Portuguese Museums – Building an Image of Ancient Egypt
This work presents some partial reflections on a post-doctoral project aiming to study epigraphy from Egyptian collections in Portugal. A quick view of some catalogues and expositions combined help us to picture how museographic strategies in use in Portugal portrait Egypt to the non-academic public. As the main focus of this work lies in epigraphy, an especial approach to selected objects will be also part of the debate
Sappho’s poems – Portraits of a poetess
The intimate nature of Sappho’s poems has led to different conclusions about her life and her feelings, though few are certain. Plato considered her the 10th muse, marking her importance in Ancient Greek literature. Yet, we only know a few of her fragments. Are these fragments a reflection of the feelings of the poetess towards some of her disciples? Or are they related to what has sometimes been thought her last passion – an old sailor, whose disappearance may have been the cause of her death?Fernando Campos’ recent novel – A Rocha Branca – is based on her life using several fragments by Sappho. Are these fragments sufficient to document the poetess’ life? Is Campos’ analysis adequate? Does he use these fragments with the specific purpose of offering an image of Sappho distinct from the usual one, which associates her with lesbian love? The purpose of this paper is to examine Sappho’s fragments, comparing them with Fernando Campos’ readings, and to test how effective they may be as the basis for an historical novel rather than as a true portrait of Sappho in Antiquity
Eduardo Lourenço e a revolução órfica
In 1955 and 1960, Eduardo Lourenço publishes his first and essential articles on the poetry of Orpheu, reading it in its opposition both to the romantic tradition and to the ‘presencist’ generation that follow. The negative heroes of this poetry are Pessoa and Sá-Carneiro, but the strength of Pessoa’s writing is unique. Therefore, in contrast with Régio and Torga, Pessoa is the transfiguration, or revolution, par excellence. Motivations in medieval war: a comparative approach between two territorial peripheries (Iberia and Baltic) – Porto, 1 de abril de 2019
The documents of the so-called Fund of the judge of the orphans of Loulé, from the Historical Archive of this city, are rare pieces in the Portuguese medieval context, with enormous interest for the study of medieval orphanage. Although produced to safeguard the interest of the orphans, and to follow the way the respective guardians administered their property or held accounts of these tutelages, they equally reveal many other facets of medieval living. Ten of them, drafted over seventy years, between 1408 and 1479, are used here to recover the utensils used in the kitchen and at the medieval table, associated with the storage, cooking and consumption of food. Not forgetting the nature and limits of the written records, but combining their reports with archaeological and ethnographical data, a fairly coherent picture was obtained, with observations on the social significance of the shortage of equipments in certain households, or on the distinction denounced by the quality and rarity of some other kitchenware.
Classical Tradition and the Painting of Giovanni da Udine
The aim of this paper is to present new literary evidence to understand the relationship between ancient Greek painting and some of the most important pictorial advances performed in the Roman Renaissance. In particular, I will focus on the classical tradition in the painting of Giovanni da Udine (1487-1564). For this purpose, I have used the testimony of George Turnbull (1698-1748). In one of his treatises, A Treatise on Ancient Painting (1740), he compares the painting of Pausias of Sicyon (IV century BC) and the Italian painter Giovanni da Udine. The observation and study of the Nero's Domus Aurea was a clear inspiration for Giovanni da Udine in his desire to create a painting all´antico. In addition, we discuss specifically the Loggia of Cardinal Bibbiena to see how the classically inspired Giovanni da Udine
