The ghost-themed optical exhibition was very popular in the nineteenth century: from Robertson’s Phantasmagoria in post-Revolutionary Paris to Pepper’s Ghost at the London Polytechnic in the 1860s, audiences rushed to witness the ghostly demonstrations, also known as ghost lectures. Recently, scholars such as Bernard Lightman and Iwan Rhys Morus have argued for a re-evaluation of historical practices such as these, which used to be considered mere spectacular entertainment: what was the role of these media experiences in making their audience relate to the new industrial and technological world around them? This article will focus on the arrival of the most famous of all ghost lectures, Pepper’s Ghost, which was brought to the Netherlands by Levie Kinsbergen Maju (1823-1886). I will trace the performances of the re-labelled De Geest van Maju (The Ghost of Maju) on Dutch fairgrounds and in permanent indoor theaters. The information I have gathered derives mainly from primary sources such as historical newspaper advertisements and reports. Additionally, I will approach the historical information through the concept of dispositif, following the proposal of media historian Frank Kessler: what aspects are at work in the dispositif of the ghost lecture? And how is this approach productive in terms of understanding Pepper’s Ghost and De Geest van Maju as historically situated media practices?

Cassetes assombradas, cópias assassinas — fantasmas cinematográficos em Ringu e The Ring

In 2002, Gore Verbinski’s remake of Hideo Nakata’s 1998 film Ringu was released, under the name of The Ring. The film is based on a successful Japanese novel about a ghost that kills all those who dare to watch a cursed video tape. Narratively, as well as aesthetically, both films struck a chord with their intended audiences, and were extremely successful. The western remake of the Asian movie also seems to have started a trend, which in addition fueled an interest in Japanese horror. In this paper we set out to analyze how these films deal with their respective ghosts. Our focus will be on how the management of the cinematic specters in these two cases relates to tradition and, particularly, how the killer ghost who haunts the tape is rooted in Japanese tradition — not only in film, but also in folklore and traditional forms of Japanese theatre, like kabuki and bunraku. While avoiding to dwell excessively on inputs marked by a psychoanalytical matrix, we argue that the ambiguity of the ghostly in the Japanese culture enhances the uncanny feeling these representations are infused with, and that due to the filmic and viral nature of this onryō and its curse, we are facing an innovative and enticing version of the ghostly.

In working with situations close to multiple violences and violations (state hand violations, intrafamily violations, etc.), a construction of a listening job requires not only time, but special attention to issues of temporality. Here we present some aspects presented in the preparation of the book “What I teach to the university”, written by several quota students from the universities of Florianópolis (Santa Catarina-Brazil), participants of GESTUS (Gestão Estudantil Universitária Integrar, associated with the Community Education Project Integrar), in order to tell their stories in the struggle for permanence in the university, in view of the high dropout rates that point to social-political and ethnic-racial crossings. A long course of preparation of this book mobilizes thoughts on topics such as politics, listening to individuals directly affected by clinical situations, transmission and temporalities. The book bet on the possibility of transmitting, archiving and recording in the public public something of the intimate and singular experiences, circulating as an “extensive” place. The book features first-person accounts, photographs of these trajectories, and a behind-the-scenes look at course courses at public universities, as well as challenges, deadlocks and discoveries.

This paper aims to critically address some photographs that compose an essay produced in 1872 by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. We propose that the image of Ndugu M’Hali, a seven years old boy, incorporates a common visual trope (Zarzycka 2016) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: children in photographic studios. This trope, enunciated by Walter Benjamin in Berlin Childhood around 1900, raises questions about visual, cultural and social memories. Through an approach conceived from the methodology proposed by Aby Warburg, it is intended to delineate different temporalities of the image in order to, on the one hand, insert it into a visual tradition, and, on the other hand, to suggest its potential as a historical-anthropological object. In this sense, the idea of pharmakon (Pinney 2008, 2012) presents itself as a possibility for a counter-gaze against that colonial and bourgeois one: photography, in its duality — both “cure” and “poison” — virtually establishes a new subject: what can become M’Hali after his death at the age of twelve?

Produzindo o bestiário: do texto à imagem

In this paper, I investigate the relationship between the text and the images in medieval Latin bestiary manuscripts. Medieval bestiaries, which are derived from the ancient Physiologus, comprise a nearly 1800-year-old tradition and have spawned several hundreds of copies throughout Europe, including a smaller subset of Latin bestiaries. Summarizing the first ever comprehensive analysis of the entire corpus of Latin bestiaries, this paper examines the patterns of deviations, or exceptions from the rigorous canon governing bestiary illustrations. I use the deviations to investigate the relationship between the work of the scribe and that of the artist in the production of bestiary manuscripts in order to determine to what extent medieval artists used already existing illustrations, and, conversely, when and to what extent they were willing or able to deviate from the canon. In the latter case, I try to explore the artist’s possible motivations, as well as the reasons for choosing specific motifs.

    No full text
In the 11th century, Europe was marked by ecclesiastical conflicts. Although tensions between lay and clergy attracted, for more than a century, the largest share of the historians' attention - especially the so-called struggles between the priesthood and the empire -, the struggles between segments of the Church itself multiplied and intensified, achieving great documentary repercussion. Among the most frequent cases of disputes during the "Gregorian Reformation Era" were clashes between monks and bishops, whose outbreak had repercussions in numerous directions: on aristocratic domination, patrimonial control networks, foundations of ecclesiology, urban mobilizations, legal consensus. The following pages consist of a study of such a case: around 1034 a quarrel opposed the high echelon of the Florentine bishopric to a portion of local monasticism filling in decades with reports of terrifying miracles, popular clamours, open challenges to the papacy and bloody disputes by legal authority. The historical analysis of this conflict articulates chronicles, cartulars, epistolary and diplomatic, guided by the hypothesis that the field of action of agents would have been affected by a singular factor: the unveiling of certain emotions shifted the geography of public prerogatives.   Bibliography Printed sources ALEXANDRE II – Epistolas. Mary’s role in the repudiation of their beliefs of Pagans, Jews and Moors

The Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X, king of Castile and León (1252-1284) contains 420 miracles and praise songs for the Virgin Mary. We have identified 41 with Jewish protagonists, 51 with Moors and 5 with pagans. Ten of these − three with Jews, 6 with Moors and one with a pagan − have been selected for treatment as they involve conversions to Christianity. Side by side, the actions of these miracle narrations are supported by what Alfonso declared to be their treatment in his law code, the Siete Partidas. There, laws regarding how non-Christians are to be treated along with specific laws about their conversion to the Christian law of the land are taken into account. Members of their religions may not impede conversions under penalty of death by fire. Both the Cantigas and the Siete Partidas reflect one another faithfully.   Bibliography: Studies ALFONSO X – Cantigas de Santa Maria. Ed. Walter Mettmann, Clásicos Castalia 134, 172, 178. SCOTT, Samuel Parsons – See Alfonso X, The Siete Partidas (above). Ed.
