Em direção a um olhar atento: estética de descolonização em Sambizanga de Sarah Maldoror
Get PDFThe current artistic and academic interest in the archive of militant cinemas within the contemporary discourse on the urgency of decolonization is the starting point for this analysis of Sarah Maldoror’s first feature Sambizanga(1972). Set right on the brink of the beginning of the armed struggle for independence in Angola in 1961, the film focuses on a woman’s search for her imprisoned husband and “the time it takes to march” (Evan 1973). This essay aims at showing how Maldoror develops a unique way of seeing in Sambizanga that seems to have the potential to open up what Achille Mbembe (2017) calls “the dungeon of appearances,” by telling a story of the process of leaving the “dark night” of colonialism (Fanon 1963, Andrade and Ollivier 1971, Mbembe 2021). By reading the film’s decolonial aesthetics in dialogue with Fanon’s theory of decolonization, and with reference to Mbembe and Kara Keeling, I trace the aesthetic approach to decolonizing temporality and visibility, bringing to the fore the argument that Maldoror achieves nothing less than what I would like to call a caring gaze, which seems to extend the logic of representation and recognition (by international audiences), and instead can be seen as a work of repair.O atual interesse artístico e académico pelo arquivo dos cinemas militantes como parte do discurso contemporâneo sobre a urgência da descolonização é o ponto de partida para esta análise da primeira longa-metragem de Sarah Maldoror, Sambizanga (1972). Rodado imediatamente antes do início da luta armada pela independência de Angola, em 1961, o filme centra-se na procura de uma mulher pelo seu marido, que foi preso, e “o tempo que leva para marchar/caminhar” (Evan 1973). Neste artigo desvelo como Maldoror, em Sambizanga, desenvolve um "modo de ver" único, que parece ter o potencial de abrir o que Achille Mbembe na Crítica da Razão Negra (2017) denomina de “masmorra de aparências”, ao desvelar a história do processo de saída da “noite escura” do colonialismo (Fanon 1963, Andrade 1971, Mbembe 2021). Ao abordar a estética decolonial do filme em diálogo com a teoria da descolonização de Fanon, bem como Mbembe e Kara Keeling, traço a abordagem estética de Maldoror de descolonização da temporalidade e da visualidade, sustentando o argumento de que o filme cria o que designo de um olhar atencioso, que vai além da lógica da representação e do reconhecimento (por uma audiência internacional), podendo ser considerado como uma obra de reparação. 
Resistência das mulheres indígenas Embera Chamí na e pela obstetrícia
Get PDFIn Latin America, indigenous midwives have faced the oppression and exploitation of their peoples and the violent implementation of policies that deprived them of the possibility of a real influence in the field of midwifery. In this sense, their memories are the possibility of learning about other ways of relating health/disease/care processes, women's body and their reproduction, the territory and the community. This visual essay is produced as a synthesis of a collective work between research on Embera Chamí women midwifery from the Resguardo La Albania, in the municipalities of San José and Risaralda, department of Caldas, in Colombia, the co-creation in the Nepono Bania Collective and the work on memory and territorial defense with the Association of indigenous women of the resguardo Cañamomo Lomaprieta, in the municipalities of Riosucio and Supia, Caldas. The reflections and discussions about women's resistance in and through midwifery and their territorial defense are also shared in ten illustrations.En América Latina, las parteras indígenas se han enfrentando con la opresión y explotación de sus pueblos y con la implementación violenta de políticas que les arrebataron la posibilidad de incidir realmente en el campo de la obstetricia. En este sentido, sus memorias son la posibilidad de aprender sobre otras formas de relacionar los procesos de salud/enfermedad/atención, el cuerpo de las mujeres, los procesos reproductivos, el territorio y la comunidad. Este ensayo visual se produce como una síntesis de un trabajo conjunto entre la investigación sobre partería de mujeres embera chamí del resguardo la Albania, municipios de San José y Risaralda, Caldas, Colombia, la co-creación en el Colectivo Nepono Bania y el trabajo sobre memoria y defensa territorial con la Asociación de mujeres indígenas del resguardo Cañamomo Lomaprieta, municipios de Riosucio y Supia, Caldas. Get PDFThe present article studies the ambiguous reception of hypnotism in 19th century Portugal. The starting point is an almost forgotten work, written by a Portuguese author, which introduced fundamental scientific and epistemological transformations in the field of hypnosis, but which seems to have been condemned to a strange oblivion, especially in Portugal: De la cause du sommeil lucide ou Étude de la nature de l’homme (1819). Indeed, the text tries to rescue the scope of the work and analyse the scientific and cultural reasons that justified the oblivion of Faria’s book in Portugal during the 19th century.O presente artigo estuda a receção ambígua do hipnotismo no Portugal do século XIX. O ponto de partida é uma obra quase esquecida, de um autor português, que introduziu transformações científicas e epistemológicas fundamentais no campo na hipnose, mas que parece ter sido condenada a um estranho esquecimento, mormente em Portugal: De la cause du sommeil lucide ou Étude de la nature de l’homme (1819). National Rivalry among Hospitallers? The Case of Bohemia and Austria, 1392-1555
Get PDFThe medieval Hospitaller priory of Bohemia was riven by ethnic divisions and mutually unintelligible languages. The prior’s lieutenant for Austria, Styria, Carinthia and Carniola, who often resided at the important commandery of Mailberg, could have been a nucleus for Austrian independence from Bohemia. The paper edits and discusses a document from 1392 where the prioral chapter deals with a quarrel between Hospitallers in Austria and Styria; their fellow-Hospitallers from the lands of the Bohemian crown (Bohemia proper, Moravia, Silesia) carefully avoided to be offend Duke Albert III of Austria. In the following decades tensions between two rival Habsburg lines in Austria and Styria weakened the position of the Hospitaller lieutenants for the Habsburg lands, especially during the Hussite wars. After the reunification of the Habsburg lands in the early 1460s the commandery of Mailberg was given by Emperor Frederick III and his son Maximilian to their courtiers and creditors, some of whom were not even Hospitallers. With papal support Frederick III tried to transfer Mailberg to his newly-founded military-religious order of St. George at Millstatt in Carinthia. But when the Habsburg rulers became kings of Bohemia and Hungary in 1526, they ceased to be interested in splitting up the Hospitaller priory of Bohemia. In the early modern period this proved to be more important for the future of the priory than “proto-national” identities.

O lugar-tenente do prior para a Áustria, Estíria, Caríntia e Carniola, que muitas vezes residia na importante comenda de Mailberg, poderia ter constituído o núcleo para a separação da Áustria relativamente à Boémia. Neste artigo edita-se e discute-se um diploma de 1392, com a resolução do capítulo do Priorado sobre a disputa entre os Hospitalários da Áustria e da Estíria, no qual os hospitalários das terras da coroa da Boémia (Boémia propriamente dita, Morávia, Silésia) evitaram cuidadosamente ofender o duque Alberto III da Áustria. Nas décadas seguintes, as tensões entre as linhas rivais dos Habsburgos na Áustria e na Estíria enfraqueceram a posição dos lugares-tenentes do Hospital, em particular durante as guerras hussitas. Get PDFNa última década, quem tenha seguido com atenção a renovação dos estudos sobre ideologia e materialidades do conflito que opôs Cristãos e Muçulmanos na Península Ibérica entre os séculos VIII e XV não se surpreenderá com a edição de um novo conjunto de textos, a finais de 2019, dedicado à edição das actas do Colóquio levado a cabo em Palmela sensivelmente um ano antes, cujos trabalhos se subordinaram ao tema que nomeia o presente volume: La Reconquista. Ideología y justificación de la Guerra Santa peninsular. A edição apresenta-se no esteio de um conjunto de publicações tematicamente relacionadas e resulta da vitalidade de uma iniciativa de investigação dedicada ao tema que conta já com dois projectos I+D financiados pelas autoridades espanholas, que tem tido o mérito de reunir um vasto elenco de especialistas de diversas nacionalidades. Sucessivos encontros científicos realizados sob a égide desta iniciativa e dedicados à amplitude do tema têm constituído um importante veio de abordagem e problematização das questões em torno do confronto que opôs os poderes Cristãos peninsulares ao Al-Andalus. A pertinente e atempada publicação das actas das discussões resultantes tem propiciado à comunidade científica um renovado dossier de estudos e questões relacionados com a Guerra Santa, a Jihad e a Cruzada no palco ibérico medieval

Get PDFNowadays, all screens show films and most of us have access to movies through various platforms, including the one that once was the only one for its consumption: the movie theater. With the quick growth of entertainment platforms in the streaming and Video-on-Demand (VoD) format in Portugal, which facilitate access to films and series, and with the gradual adhesion of the Portuguese to it, this article seeks to address the portion of people who choose to watch audiovisual content in the comfort of their own home through paid services. Thus, in order to know the method of audiovisual consumption in our country and its current changes, an analysis was carried out — through consultations on public access platforms, interviews, and access to data by related entities linked to statistical studies — to the number of subscribers on streaming and VoD platforms and its evolution, compared to the total number of movie viewers in recent years. The results revealed that from 2019 to the end of 2020, the Portuguese population adhered on a large scale — regardless of their age or location — to platforms that provide audiovisual content through streaming and/or VoD.Atualmente, todos os ecrãs exibem filmes e muitos temos acesso ao consumo de cinema através de variadas plataformas, incluindo a que, em tempos, terá sido a única para o seu consumo: a sala de cinema. Com o rápido crescimento de plataformas de conteúdos de entretenimento no formato de streaming1 e Video-on-Demand (VoD)2 em Portugal, que facilitam o acesso a filmes e séries, e com a gradual adesão dos portugueses às mesmas, o presente artigo procura abordar a porção de pessoas que opta por uma exibição de conteúdos audiovisuais no conforto do seu lar através de serviços pagos. Desta forma, com o objetivo definido de conhecer o método de consumo de programação audiovisual no nosso país e as suas actuais alterações, foi feita uma análise — através de consultas em plataformas de acesso público, entrevistas e acesso a dados por parte de entidades ligadas a estudos estatísticos — ao número de subscritores nas plataformas de streaming e VoD e a sua evolução, comparativamente com o número total de espectadores de cinema durante os últimos anos. Os resultados revelaram que de 2019 até finais de 2020, a população portuguesa aderiu em larga escala — independentemente da sua idade ou localização — a plataformas que fornecem conteúdos audiovisuais através de streaming e/ou VoD

Get PDFBy focusing on the study of images and other archival sources, this article points out that women’s engagement against the colonial wars of the Portuguese Estado Novo occurred on a scale that largely overcame national state borders. In these movements across the globe, a plural scenario of roles and representations of women emerge. In discussing the connection between methodology and epistemology, the article aims to contribute to the debate on the relationship between the production of knowledge about women and the transnational, feminist and decolonial perspectives. Com base no estúdio de imagens e de outras fontes de arquivo, este artigo argumenta que o envolvimento político das mulheres contra as guerras coloniais do Estado Novo aconteceu numa escala que vai para além das fronteiras do estado nação. Ao traçar os movimentos das mulheres pelo mundo emerge um panorama plural de muitos papéis e representações de mulheres em luta. A partir da conexão entre metodologia e epistemologia, este artigo pretende contribuir para o debate sobre a relação entre produção de conhecimento sobre as mulheres e uma perspetiva transnacional, feminista e decolonial.
