Was the Hephthalite Empire in Central Asia the Cradle of the Justinianic Plague?
International audienceThe origins and early diffusion of the Justinianic Plague likely involved the Hephthalite and Alkhan Huns as an essential conduit for the bacterium’s dispersal from Central Asia. Written and dna evidence together support this route of transmission. The plague is an enzootic bacterial disease, and dna suggests that the animal reservoirs hosting the lineage that gave rise to the pandemic lived near the Tianshan mountains. Written sources from the Roman Empire describe the plague’s appearance via the Red Sea, which suggests importation across the Indian Ocean. Connections emerge between the Hephthalite military campaigns both to the north and to the south, the presence of plague-bearing animals like camels and marmots, and routes of ancient trade. Several Buddhist sources echoing the situation in the last period of Hephthalite domination in India (c. 540 c.e.) report mass deaths, allegedly from massacres, which, according to associated details, can be reinterpreted as an epidemic. The proposed journey of the plague involved two major stages, first from Central Asia to India and then across maritime routes to Africa and the Red Sea. This hypothesis aligns with the available sources, offering a plausible model that is most consistent with written and genetic evidence
International audienceThis book invites us to dive into a meticulous exploration of pious patronage as a complex social phenomenon, revealing its various entanglements, contradictions, and phases of growth and recession over time. The setting is Medieval Bulgaria from the 12th to the 15th century: nestled at the heart of the Balkans, this region knew the alternating rule of three Empires (Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman) and therefore stands out as a privileged field of study, a perfect vantage point from which the author approaches the dynamic interaction between the influence that pious patronage wielded upon the configuration of public spaces, reflecting its wider impact upon societal dynamics and the role of the church therein, and the new spatial, institutional and social conditions it helped bring about, in a continuous cycle of evolution and adjustment. To the fruition of this endeavour was enlisted a rich collection of sources – often largely unexplored – such as buildings, religious artefacts, manuscripts and documents, assembled by the author as a result of a decade’s worth of field research and detailed analysis. With careful documentation, translation and contextualisation this evidence sheds light not only on the generosity of the elites and the development of the clergy but onto humbler forms of benevolence, thereby broadening our understanding of religious patronage in the Late Middle Ages.
International audienceIn their reception of the Chinese Christian documents from the Tang period, Peter Saeki and Arthur Moule put forth a distinction between the Aluoben documents and the Jingjing documents, assuming that the authors of these texts shared the same cultural background, held similar theological opinions and belonged to a single Christian community. However, the account of Zunjing about Alunogen's arrival in China shows that he might not have been involved in translating the Jingjiao texts into Chinese. In contrast with Peter Saeki and Arthur Moule's view, it seems reasonable to posit that Aluoben might have been a diplomatic emissary of the Persian Sassanid Empire and that the author of the Xi'an stele subsequently emphasized his identity as a missionary. Given that Yishenlun and Xuting Mishisuo jing were addressed to an audience with an understanding of the Sogdian language, it seems implausible that these two texts were composed by Aluoben in Chang'an and intended for court officials. Furthermore, it is evident that the Christians who emigrated to China in the 7 th and 8 th centuries were of Sogdian, Persian, and Bactrian origins, and therefore had a diverse range of historical and cultural backgrounds. In addition, an examination of the theological opinions expressed in Yishenlun and Xuting Mishisuo jing in comparison to those found in other Jingjiao texts reveals notable divergences. These elements rather suggest that the authors and intended addressees of the Chinese Christian texts were part of disparate groups with distinct cultural backgrounds and theological features.

International audienceBy the late 1890s, the search for a new ideal of domestic life was accompanied by the development of ideas about a modern dwelling suitable for Japan. These debates contributed to the spread of Western housing, which reached its peak during the Taishō era (1912-1926). During this time, dwelling became a central issue in architectural thinking, due to the growing need for housing and changing lifestyles. The notion of the ideal dwelling was first introduced in this context, promoted by architects who saw the need to modernize Japanese housing in response to the incorporation of the Western model. One architect, Katsuya Yasuoka (1877-1942), seized on this notion and associated it with an original reflection on the Japanese tea house. Its design was integrated into the dwelling's architecture as it was defined as a necessary space. Although he was not the only person who took an interest in the tea house at this time, he set himself apart by publishing dedicated works fully dedicated to the subject. In his books, he characterized the tea house as a model of pre-modern Japanese taste, which he was looking for in these modern dwellings. In this way, he created an ideal of modern Japanese dwelling. This study analyzes the debates on the ideal dwelling in the Taishō era and Yasuoka’s thinking on housing and the tea pavilion. It underscores the way Yasuoka’s thoughts created an ideal dwelling and how his ideas were relevant to the debates of his time. Despite being considered as the Japan's foremost housing theoretician, Yasuoka’s contribution to this debate has been largely ignored by research. Nevertheless, his thoughts on the tea pavilion are an integral part of housing theory and provide a new perspective on the definition of an ideal of modern Japanese dwelling.
Silk Road orientations in Xinjiang archaeology and shifting implications for Eurasian studies
International audienceXinjiang’s location naturally makes it a focal point of the Silk Road (hereafter SR). But considering that for the first 60 years ( circa 1920–1980) of Chinese archaeology—that is, over half of its development—the SR was rarely mentioned in scientific literature, the impact it has had on archaeological studies of Xinjiang remains unclear and poorly understood. With the eponymous Belt and Road Initiative (hereafter BRI) now a decade old and the field of Xinjiang archaeology approaching its centennial, this has become a critical subject of enquiry. In this article, I recount the history of publication and discourse in Xinjiang, followed by a discussion of recent developments in archaeological practice instigated by the BRI. I contend that consistently using the SR to conceptualize the material record of Xinjiang, a prevalent approach in Eurasian scholarship, is based on flawed and unscientific presuppositions. Even in Chinese discourse today, the SR concept has become secondary to the state objective of building scientific and cultural infrastructure that is Chinese in method and approach, the goal of which is to amplify ‘discourse power’. Although the SR has served as a major banner for unifying studies on cross-cultural contact in Eurasian history, it is laden with complex layers of archaeological history intertwined with a century-old chauvinistic geopolitics that still reverberate globally today. As the scientific role of the SR becomes increasingly muddled, research referencing the SR must navigate the term’s biased presentist connotations to unveil the pertinent historical contexts, or consider alternative frameworks that resist totalizing narratives
Transsexual Surgery in Egypt or the Suspicion of Homosexuality
International audienceThe figure of the ‘third gender’ is not new in Egypt but today medical advances made it possible for trans people to undergo sex change surgery. Although a fatwā was issued in 1988 by the Sunnī muftī of al-Azhar in Cairo, at-Tantawi, about the case of a trans person, Sally Mursi, it did not in fact authorize surgery for trans people but only for intersex individuals. Recently, Malak al-Kashif, another trans woman, struggled for trans rights in the first trans association created in 2017 in Egypt called Transat. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the situation of transsexuality in Sunni Egypt with Shī ʿ ī Iran shows that, paradoxically, Iran allows transsexual surgery for the same reason that Egypt forbids it: the ban of homosexuality
