This synopsis summarises the key points addressed in this volume and seeks to highlight the golden threads discernable in the intertextual connections. At the same time, it also emphasizes the unique features of the individual texts, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods in line with the theme of the collection. Central unifying keywords include data collection and handling, the tension between qualitative and quantitative approaches, the element of chance, visualization, issues of context, knowledge communication, and computational competence and literacy. The latter aspect serves as a bridge to a concluding commentary, in which the still-emerging biographies of the authors are incorporated as a framework, following the model of the other contributions
Breakout sessions as (free) spaces for learner interaction in GFL classes
This paper presents initial results from an international study on peer interaction in breakout sessions in a virtual classroom setting. Students in a German as a foreign or second language program at a university in Germany design a digital learning environment as part of an A2-level German course for university students from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, in which task-based stimuli are used to initiate interactions between learners with as little teacher-control as possible. This creates opportunities for the learners to engage with complex content and to focus on meaningful, near-real-life negotiations. The study centers on the comparison of two parallel group work sessions and analyzes how the group members negotiate, establish, and organize their joint approach
“Paris” and “Buxtehude”. The semanticizations of space in Wilhelm Schröder’s Swinegels Reise nah Paris as Friedensstifter in the context of nationalism in Low German literature of the 1860s and 1870s
In the 1860s and 1870s, Wilhelm Schröder was a prolific author of Low German texts with a focus on current political issues. Schröders texts offer rich material for an examination of nationalism in Low German literature and its positioning in the area between literature and politics at the time of the wars of unification. Based on Jurij M. Lotman’s reflections on the narrative function of semanticizations of space, those semanticizations are identified and analyzed in Schröder’s Swinegels Reise nah Paris as Friedensstifter. The text designs a world that is clearly divided into a French and a North German area. It is shown how the latter represents the whole of Germany in Schröder’s Text. The analysis of Schröder’s semanticizations of space forms the basis for elaborating the text’s attitude towards Northern Germany, Germany, and nation building. Schröder’s thematization of current political events and his clearly articulated nationalist positions are also demonstrated in the author’s other works. Furthermore, they are placed in the context of Low German literature at the time of the wars of unification. During this time, Low German literature increasingly focused on political events. In order to understand this tendency, the text suggests that, in addition to the general rise of nationalism, the 1860’s waning of interest in Low German literature that was not written by Fritz Reuter should also be taken into account. The starting point for that argumentation is Schröder’s biography as an author and his position in the literary scene
Exploring Viewers’ Experiences of ‘Series Fatigue’
Streaming services may be thriving, but some viewers become increasingly critical of serial content and the way it is presented and distributed. This article addresses the phenomenon of ‘series fatigue,’ which has become common with recipients who encounter an unmanageable abundance of consumable material online. Despite the positively perceived emancipation from linear television, opaque platform dynamics create new requirements for self-organization and management of leisure media consumption. Accordingly, overwhelmed viewers state that watching TV and streaming-based series has started to feel like work. Many also criticize that the premature cancellation of series has become an all too regular experience, while others feel patronized by the platforms’ experimenting with no-binge release schedules. The traditionally strained fan-producer relationship is thus further complicated by powerful third parties: platforms that act as distributors and curators and thus ultimately gatekeepers of content.
This qualitative, exploratory, and collaborative study from Denmark and Germany brings to light various facets of ‘series fatigue,’ drawing on qualitative interviews with a sample of students and scholars in which their experiences of series fatigue as well as their coping strategies come to light. It also extrapolates possible consequences for fan cultural media consumption in the age of platform capitalism: The sheer amount of available content may lead to people falling out of love with series more quickly or not becoming fans in the first place but rather sticking to a more superficial or distracted viewing mode associated with non-fans. As recommendation-based streaming platforms seem to encourage individual binge-watching (cf. Lickhardt 2024) and “cyclical fandom” (Hills 2005) rather than socially-oriented and ritualized viewing practices, the future of fandom as a collective activity and experience seems to be called into question

Cycling as a Fieldwork Aid to Historical Interpretation
My focus here is on cycling and its benefits to the historian as a means of historico-geographical understanding. The contribution is intended to supplement Matthias Egeler’s piece in this volume, which emphasises the importance of walking as a fieldwork aid to the interpretation of local legends, whereas my attention is directed at a different means of non-motorised locomotion. The historical period under consideration is the fairly remote, and badly documented, time of the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons in the seventh century, particularly as related by the ecclesiastical historian Bede (c. 730), and the setting, of course, is England, and specifically its northern reaches and the Welsh Marches
Connecting RDM Services: Interoperability and Interfaces for RDMO
The Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO) supports researchers in the creation of data management plans (DMPs). The open source software has established itself widely across Germany as the standard DMP tool. For its broader adoption, integration with other services for research data management is key. In this paper we reflect on the potential of RDMO on this issue, we explain its adaptiveness by design, its plugin architecture, and report on the first RDMO Hackathon organized in Darmstadt in Aug 2023 which focussed on the integration of RDMO via plugins. We present three extensions and plugins developed during the hackathon: 1.) a JSON-editor for RDMO data transfer and mapping, 2.) an RO-crate export plugin, 3.) a sensor database option set plugin
Bringing Neuroscientific Data to Sustainability: Embedded Data Stewardship in CRC 1280
Information Management (INF) projects are essential to the establishment of infrastructures for the management of research data and metadata in Collaborative Research Centers (CRCs) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). However, the CRC\u27s disciplines, the INF project\u27s design, and the institutional setting all have a significant impact on the organization and daily responsibilities of INF data stewards. We demonstrate the impact of embedded data stewardship on research data management (RDM) in the case of CRC 1280 "Extinction Learning". Central aim of the RDM in CRC 1280 was the implementation of data sharing across all subprojects at an early stage of the research life cycle. Despite obstacles such as legal issues regarding sensitive data and a highly competitive culture in life science, the CRC was successful in realising this goal. Key to this success was building trust with researchers through participatory strategy development, the implementation of supportive training formats and personal, on-site consultations by an embedded data steward with appropriate scientific background. In addition, the CRC’s endeavours were led to sustainability by bridging the gap between researchers and central infrastructure. INF paved the way for the CRC to participate in the development of the university-central repository infrastructure, enabling the emergence of a sustainable RDM infrastructure tailored to the needs of the researchers
