The Role of Context to Detect Conflict Expression in Text

    No full text
International audienceThe notion of context, present since Antiquity, has gained increasing importance across various fields such as linguistic semantics, cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence (AI), and natural language processing (NLP) since the 1980s. In text analysis, a distinction is made between “internal context” (textual elements surrounding a linguistic item) and “external context” (circumstances surrounding the production of a fact or process). Context is thus crucial both for determining the meaning of linguistic signs and for interpreting texts Although NLP and generative AI systems simulate linguistic exchanges, they often lack explicit internal representations of contextualization processes This paper aims to shed light on what is meant by “context,” with a particular focus on “cultural context.” It specifically investigates the expression of conflictual elements that can be identified in texts through the activation of context

Optimal maintenance decision-making for continuously degrading systems with imperfect repairs using Markov decision processes

    No full text
International audienceRepair serves as a cost-effective strategy to extend a system's useful life, yet its efficiency is significantly influenced by stochastic factors such as maintenance engineer expertise and part quality. To optimize maintenance decisions, it is critical to model these uncertainties and evaluate their impact on resulting policies. Motivated by this challenge, we address in this paper two important problems in elaborating the degradationbased maintenance policy for repairable systems: (1) developing a framework to identify optimal maintenance policies for a single-unit system experiencing continuous degradation, periodic inspections, perfect replacements, and imperfect repairs with stochastic repair coefficients; and (2) systematically evaluating how variability in repair efficiency impacts economic performance. For such a maintenance problem, we assume that the system degradation follows an inverse Gaussian process with general shape functions, while the stochastic repair efficiency is modeled using a beta-distributed random variable. Unlike conventional parametric policy approaches, we formulate the problem as a Markov decision process to directly learn state-to-action mappings under the long-run average cost criterion. To overcome computational challenges posed by the mixed discrete-continuous state space, the policy is optimized through dynamic programming combined with function approximation. Regarding the evaluation of the framework's performance, we conduct comparative studies against alternative maintenance policies, such as replacement-only policies, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach

Effect of Rice Husk Addition on the Hygrothermal, Mechanical, and Acoustic Properties of Lightened Adobe Bricks

International audienceIn the context of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector, the reintegration of traditional earthen construction into modern architectural and renovation practices offers a sustainable alternative. To address the mechanical and water-resistance limitations of adobe bricks, the use of agricultural waste—such as rice husk—is increasingly being explored. This experimental study evaluates the effects of rice husk addition on the mechanical, hygrothermal, and acoustic properties of adobe bricks. Two soil types—one siliceous and one calcareous—were combined with 1, 2, and 3 wt% rice husk to produce bio-based earthen bricks. The influence of rice husk was found to depend strongly on the soils’ mineralogical and granulometric characteristics. The most significant improvements were in hygrothermal performance: at 3 wt%, thermal conductivity was reduced by up to 35% for calcareous soil and 20% for siliceous soil, indicating enhanced insulation. Specific heat capacity also increased with husk content, suggesting better thermal inertia. The moisture buffering capacity, already high in raw soils, is further improved due to increased surface porosity. Mechanically, rice husk incorporation had mixed effects: a modest increase in compressive strength was observed in siliceous soil at 1 wt%, while calcareous soil showed slight improvement at 3 wt%. Acoustic performance remained low across all samples, with minimal gains attributed to limited macro-porosity. These findings highlight the importance of soil composition in optimizing rice husk dosage and suggest promising potential for rice husk-stabilized adobe bricks, especially in thermally demanding environments

Cooperating in Academia with underspecified protocols: A case study of students and researchers practitioners of Grounded theory methodology (GTM).

    No full text
International audienceAs scientific projects become increasingly cooperative, we can identify two approaches: the first one tends to distribute datawork among participants performing the same task while the other brings together different experts to work on the same data. Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM) is frequently used for academic cooperative projects but does not clearly specify how cooperation should be organized. This paper aims to identify the different cooperative work practices of actors who use this method. We conducted a qualitative study combining semi-structured interviews with participant and non-participant observations involving social sciences researchers and students. We find that cooperation in GTM projects relies on continuous adjustments, informal task distribution, and digital artifacts not explicitly designed to support this methodology. Qualitative analysis tools incorporating coordination protocols are often perceived as too constraining, requiring actors to engage in additional articulation work. Based on these findings, we propose recommendations to improve the design of existing tools and design artifacts better suited to cooperative work in GTM.
