Ethical challenges in organ transplants for refugees in a healthcare system
Background Several ethical issues are associated with providing living organ transplantation services, and there is limited information on these issues faced by the teams providing service to refugees or asylum seekers.Aim To determine the challenges healthcare professionals face in organ transplant centers providing services to Syrians under temporary protection status and discern whether these difficulties align with ethical issues in living organ transplantation.Research design This study employed a qualitative design and conducted individual semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 18 transplant team members in Istanbul between September and November 2022. Data analysis was based on Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis.Participants and research context The participants comprised 18 healthcare professionals, including 6 physicians and 12 nurses working in organ transplant teams in Istanbul.Ethical considerations The University's Ethics Committee provided approval. Participants were informed regarding confidentiality and signed an informed consent form. Results Three themes emerged from the data on ethical issues faced by organ transplantation services to Syrians: (a) beneficence or double equipoise, (b) autonomy, and (c) justice. Transplant teams experience problems related to preserving double equipoise in the provision of living donor organ transplantation because of language barriers, poor socioeconomic conditions, and cultural factors, which increases transplant teams' individual and indirect social burden. Although problems arise from the language barrier when obtaining informed consent in the autonomy theme, institutional and national policies in preventing donor abuse have a comforting effect. Health workers had the least problems with the justice theme, wherein national health policies are determined. Conclusion Fewer issues related to autonomy and justice were reported in providing organ transplantation services to Syrians, with the most intense reported issues being maintaining double equipoise. The results revealed the need to develop institutional, national, and international policies with individual solutions to prevent difficulties healthcare professionals face in this process
Comparative analysis of IscM and IscQu in feline oral squamous cell carcinoma treatment: cytotoxic and apoptotic insights
Backround Feline oral squamous cell carcinoma (FOSCC) is the most common malignant oral tumor in cats, characterized by invasive and aggressive behavior regardless of its location. Conventional treatments, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, often yield unsatisfactory outcomes, with tumor progression and tissue destruction frequently leading to euthanasia. In anthroposophical medicine, extracts of Viscum album have been developed as complementary cancer treatments, with Iscador, the oldest and most widely used oncological drug, showing promising anticancer potential. This study investigated, for the first time, the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of IscM and IscQu, two Viscum album extracts, on FOSCC cells. Methods Using primary cultures of three FOSCC cell lines, cell viability assays were performed to assess cytotoxicity, and the effects on apoptotic cell death, cell cycle arrest, and cellular and nuclear morphology were evaluated. Additionally, mRNA expression levels of Cyclin D, Cdk4, Bcl-2, Bax, and p53 were analyzed. Results The results revealed that both IscM and IscQu induced apoptotic cell death and promoted cell cycle arrest in all three FOSCC cell lines tested. IscQu exhibited relatively stronger pro-apoptotic effects compared to IscM, although no significant differences were observed among the cell lines. Conclusion These findings suggest that Viscum album extracts, particularly IscQu, may exert anti-tumor effects on feline oral squamous cell carcinoma cells in vitro

Designing Efficient Web Scraping Pipelines for Intelligent Systems: Java vs. Python
This paper presents a concise comparison between Java and Python for web scraping. Java and Python are two popular programming languages used in extracting data from websites. The comparison examines their syntax differences, available libraries (such as Jsoup for Java and BeautifulSoup/Scrapy for Python), ecosystem support, learning curve, and performance. Real-world use cases are explored to highlight situations in which each language shines. The findings provide valuable information for developers and researchers in making an informed decision about which language to choose for web scraping projects, considering factors such as ease of use, community support, and performance requirements
Anahtar kelimeler: Barış Bıçakçı, Sinek Isırıklarının Müellifi, Anlatıbilim, Gérard Genette, AnlatıAnalizi, Zaman KurgusuSinek Isırıklarının Müellifi, first published in 2011, by Barış Bıçakçı, one of the distinctive writers ofcontemporary Turkish literature, focuses on its anxious, obsessive, and melancholic protagonist,Cemil’s seemingly stagnant and monotonous life in a housing complex in Ankara after submitting hisfirst novel to a publishing house in İstanbul and the period during which he waits for the publisher’sresponse. Behind this seemingly narrow temporal and spatial framework, however, the narrativereveals the family ties, friendships, and inner conflicts of the urban individual, while simultaneouslyquestioning the literary creation in its aesthetic and ethical dimensions. Structured around the axesof time, nostalgia, alienation, and the act of writing, the narrative exhibits a multilayeredcomposition, shaped by the ambiguous shifts in perspective and sudden temporal transitions.Accordingly, this study aims to examine the complex narrative structure of Sinek IsırıklarınınMüellifi within the framework of temporal structure. In accordance with this purpose, drawing uponthe theory elaborated by Gérard Genette, one of the leading theorists of narratology, in his workNarrative Discourse: An Essay in Method, the narrative will be analyzed in terms of the narrativesequence (order), rhythm (duration), and repetitions (frequence). Thus, the temporal relationsbetween discourse and story will be examined in order to reveal their functions and contributions tothe thematic and semantic structure of the narrative. Keywords: Barış Bıçakçı, Sinek Isırıklarının Müellifi, Narratology, Gérard Genette, NarrativeAnalysis, Temporal Structure </p
Evaluation of the effects of poppy capsule waste on bio-based epoxy flooring
PurposeIn this study, poppy capsule waste (PCW) was incorporated into a bio-based epoxy resin (BER) containing 27% biocarbon at weight ratios of 0.5%, 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% to produce composite coatings. The resulting coatings were evaluated for adhesion, mechanical properties, thermal performance, surface properties, wettability and water absorption. This study aims to provide a new application for natural waste and to improve the performance properties of BERs, such as adhesion.Design/methodology/approachEpoxy resins are widely used in structural applications due to their high adhesion strength, corrosion resistance and mechanical durability. One of the most used types is a synthetic epoxy resin produced through the reaction of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin. However, concerns regarding the endocrine-disrupting effects of such materials have increased interest in safer alternatives for human health and the environment. In this context, BERs derived from plant-based sources such as soybean and castor oil offer more environmentally friendly options, as they are modified through epoxidation processes. Today, the reuse of natural and industrial waste has gained significant importance in promoting sustainable production approaches and reducing environmental impact. This trend is also reflected in recent research on epoxy-based material systems.FindingsAdhesion, mechanical properties, thermal performance, surface properties, wettability and water absorption properties of composites containing increasing amounts of PCW were investigated. While thermal resistance showed slight improvement with PCW addition, significant enhancements were observed in wettability and pull-off strength. Surface morphology analysis revealed particle agglomeration from the outer surface toward the interior as the PCW ratio increased. Based on these findings, it is suggested that epoxy resins combined with PCW have potential for use in the construction industry.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is one of the first to explore the use of PCW as a functional filler in BER systems. The findings provide new insights into the development of sustainable composite materials with enhanced surface and adhesion properties, supporting the reuse of agricultural waste in structural applications
