Attendance at lectures and problem-solving sessions is often low in many of Sweden\u27s universities. For the past decade, the methodology for problem-solving sessions in mathematics has developed significantly. Teachers have abandoned traditional teaching methods, where students receive help by raising their hands or by the teacher solving more difficult problems on the board, in favor of more collaborative learning. The collaborative teaching methods at BTH involve students solving problems in smaller groups through discussions on whiteboards. The purpose of this study is to investigate how collaborative learning can contribute compared to more traditionally conducted problem-solving sessions, in terms of attendance and study results. Students were given the choice of whether they wanted to belong to the traditional group, the individual group, or the group that solved problems in smaller groups on whiteboards, the collaborative group, during the problem-solving sessions in the introductory physics course. The study shows that attendance was positively affected for the collaborative group, which also tended to spend more time outside the scheduled teaching hours in the course. Nyckelord: Närvaro, genomströmning, kollaborativt lärande, undervisning i fysik & matemati

    STUDENTERS ANVÄNDANDE AV GENERATIV AI

Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, generative AI has become a focal point in higher education. As educational developers at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), we have identified a lack of research in several areas of generative AI. Therefore, we conducted this study to enhance our knowledge and gain insights into students\u27 use of GenAI. Our study aims to provide an understanding of how frequently and for what purposes students use GenAI, how it affects their study techniques, whether they feel their education has adapted to GenAI, and if an institution-licensed GenAI tool influences their usage. This study primarily serves as a basis for further development work at BTH but is also generally applicable to higher education. In May 2024, a digital survey was sent to 4729 students at Blekinge Institute of Technology, resulting in 488 responses, representing 10.3% of the student population. The results show that 68% of respondents have used GenAI, and 64% indicate that it has changed their study techniques. The open responses highlight three primary uses: idea generation, text work, and various forms of understanding. Regarding study techniques, most students use GenAI as a study companion/extra teacher and for various text-related tasks. It also appears that institution-specific GenAI tools have minimal impact on students\u27 usage. The data further indicates that the majority of students do not believe their education has adapted to GenAI or addresses issues such as guidelines, ethics, and discussions on the subject. We recommend further studies on students\u27 actual use of GenAI, especially where they use GenAI as a study companion/extra teacher, as this may offer pedagogical benefits.

Border and Bordering Practices in an EU “Buffer Zone”: The Case of Serbia: Serbia’s Role in Border Governance and Migration Diplomacy in an EU Context

    No full text
The geographical expansion of the EU migration policies toward candidate countries in the Western Balkans is reshaping perceptions of borders—both as physical realities and socio-political constructs. Drawing on insights from the Critical Border Studies (CBS) framework, this article explores the externalization of migration and border management in the Western Balkans, with a particular focus on Serbia\u27s central position along the Balkan route. It examines Serbia\u27s role in border and migration governance beyond the asymmetrical dynamics of the EU accession process, considering the political and economic advantages of its \u27buffer zone\u27 status—where it safeguards the EU’s external borders while leveraging this position as a tool of migration diplomacy

Studying the Absurdity of EU Border Controls: Using Literary Nonsense Genre to Critique Frontex’s Risk Analyses and EU Border Control and to Imagine Alternative Responses

    No full text
Migration scholars deal with absurd policies and practices in their everyday research. Yet there is little research on the absurd as such or the use of absurdity as an analytical lens to understand those policies and practices. Drawing on my PhD research on the European Border and Coast Guard agency’s (Frontex) securitization of migration, this commentary makes a case for the need to study the absurd and illustrates how this can be done. It argues that focusing on the absurd helps us question the taken for granted and imagine alternatives to the status quo, which is emancipatory for a discipline that is rooted in state-centric perspectives on mobility and has positive effects for refugees and migrants

Satellite Migration – Conceptualising High-Skilled Migration Beyond Existing Approaches and Disciplinary Silos: Towards a New Conceptualisation of High-Skilled Migration

    No full text
This commentary contends that prevailing migration theories struggle to explain the career-driven, recurrent mobility of highly skilled migrants (HSM). Bridging migration and organizational studies, the authors introduce ‘satellite migration’: HSM orbit among organizational–national “gravitational fields,” where the strength of embedding tightens or loosens orbits and misalignment triggers ‘escape velocity’ to new destinations. While sharing barriers and recognition needs with other migrants, HSM’s transferable capital and legal latitude produce distinctive post-mobility dynamics, motivating a cross-disciplinary reframing of high-skilled migration

WE’RE NOT ALL IN THE SAME BOAT: ON SUPERVISION IN THE FIELD OF CREATIVE WRITING

This essay reflects on the ways that supervision in the field of Creative Writing comes with queries and situations that are at the moment perhaps unusual in other academic fields. Some of the aspects of supervision outlined here demand a multifaceted response from a supervisor, particularly in how the boundaries between private, personal, professional behaviour are negotiated and renegotiated on a continuous basis. The shifting sands of these relationships in text and in real life have to be seen as a reciprocal relationship where the student will want to set boundaries, the same as the supervisor. These are human interactions which involves a morass of interaction on many, often parallel, levels, best ameliorated by clear communication.

MOTIVATORS FOR EXTRACURRICULAR RESEARCH PROJECT PARTICIPATION AND PERSPECTIVES OF INTERNATIONALISATION: : CRIMINOLOGY STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES OF VERTICALLY INTEGRATED PROJECTS AT MALMÖ UNIVERSITY

Research-based teaching methods foster an environment that cultivates new knowledge to tackle real-life challenges. Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) utilise this pedagogical approach to promote collaboration among students and researchers in multidisciplinary teams at the faculty level. This supports the development of soft and hard skills, teamwork, and leadership abilities. However, VIP is not easily accessible for international students in non-English-speaking universities due to language barriers and structural constraints. The present study employs a qualitative focus group method to explore the motivations and barriers faced by Criminology master’s students in participating in extracurricular activities like VIP, their perspectives on international opportunities at Malmö University, and whether VIP could enhance internationalisation. The findings indicate that students recognise the benefits of VIP and extracurricular activities; however, various factors, including misconceptions, affect student participation. Moreover, a desire for international collaborative research was expressed.

Waiting for Resettlement: Insights from Rwandan Refugee Camps: The Psychosocial Impact of Prolonged Uncertainty

    No full text
Resettlement serves as a protection mechanism and a durable solution for refugees. While research has explored various dimensions of resettlement, the lived experiences of navigating identification and selection processes remain insufficiently examined. Rwanda, a key first-asylum country and strategic partner in UNHCR’s resettlement efforts, provides a fruitful case to explore these processes. Fieldwork conducted in February 2025 employed a qualitative mixed-methods approach, generating insights from refugees and the UNHCR office in Kigali. The research focused on the psychosocial impact of prolonged uncertainty throughout the resettlement process and the dynamics of communication between UNHCR, resettlement states, and refugees. Refugees view resettlement as a rare opportunity to secure rights, dignity, and prospects, yet the extended uncertainty and limited access to information generate feelings of dependency and mistrust. The findings reveal a persistent gap between the formal procedures formulated by the UNHCR and the refugees’ lived realities

Transgenerational Transmission of Forced Migration Experiences in Palestinian Families: A Biographical-Narrative Analysis: Transmitting Memories of Displacement Across Generations

    No full text
This article examines how experiences of war and forced migration are transmitted across generations within Palestinian families in Germany. Based on eight biographical interviews with young adults, the analysis reconstructs how family histories are narrated and shape individual biographies. Notably, all second-generation participants began their stories with their families’ migration histories, although the study focused on educational trajectories. Two cases—Aliya and Bilal—illustrate distinct modes of transmission: restrictive parenting rooted in war experiences and persistent existential insecurity. The study advances understanding of transgenerational transmission and calls for further research on resilience and support for affected families
