Determinants of Profitability in Nigerian Listed Deposit Money Banks

    No full text
The study examines the determinants ofprofitability of ten deposit money banks inNigeria over the period 2007-2016. Five potentialbank-specific factors (non-performing loan, capital adequacy, size, deposit growth and age)and three macroeconomic factors (real interestrate, growth in GDP and inflation rate) wereconsidered. Using Random Effects GeneralizedLeast Squares estimation technique, the findingssuggest that banks’ profitability is only affectedby bank-specific factors while macroeconomicvariables seem to have no influence. Consistentwith theoretical expectation, results show anegative and statistically significant relationshipbetween non-performing loan ratio and bankprofitability as well as a direct relationshipbetween profitability and capital adequacy ratio. The three macroeconomic variables haveinsignificant relationship with bank profitability. It is recommended that bank managementconsider non-performing loan and capitaladequacy as relevant factors when issues relating to prescription of policy on profitability of banks are discussed and formulated
