Zwischen Bildungsreise und Klischee. Neapel in der deutschen Gegenwartskultur
The article examines the cross-media popularity of Naples in German films, novels, travelogues, advertising brochures and comics. By using the new concept of the «cultural icon», it provides the following insights: if the German experiences of Naples and Italy are combined with an ideal of (self-)education, they form a coherent complex across all media inwhich we can always find a reference to, and an update and a specific productive use of, Goethe’s journey to Italy. Understanding Goethe’s journeyto Italy as an iconic model thus provides a compact and precise approachto the manifold popularity of Naples in contemporary German culture
Wiederholtes Weltende in anderen Breitengraden. Neapel in Franz Werfels Zeit- und Familienroman Die Geschwister von Neapel
In The Pascarella Family, Franz Werfel’s family novel about the Neapolitansociety of the late 1920s, it is actually not Napoli that prevailsbut Italy more generally, according to the author himself who commentedhis work in an interview in 1931. This assessment confirmsthe problematical status of Napoli which, although physically in theforeground, quite vanishes in the background on a symbolic level.Whereas the capital of Campania appears along with the main charactersin the original German title (Die Geschwister von Neapel) andconstitutes the framework and scenery of almost every chapter inWerfel’s novel, the heterogeneity in the perception and representationof the town gives rise to mixed feelings in the reader, who is hence justified in questioning Werfel’s relationship to Napoli and attendant issuessuch as modernity, tradition or tourism. Our analysis of the wayNapoli has been depicted by Werfel, or rather by his characters (themembers of the Pascarella family), should help understand why Italysignificantly prevails over Napoli in his literary attempt of re-presenting(that is showing once again) the fall of a world similar to whatWerfel experienced less than 20 years earlier with the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and what this changing of places and latitudes(from Austria to Southern Italy) eventually implicates in his eyes
La stanza di Barbablù. I diari di Thomas Mann come fonte psicologica e storica
The paper analyzes Thomas Mann’s Tagebücher as a political-historical and a psychological source. The author discusses some fundamental and example “junctions” in this sense. On the historical-political level, the analysis focuses on the one hand on Mann’s stance on Räterepublik, on the other on the early years of his exile, framed through the lens of the Meerfahrt mit “Don Quijote”. On the psychological level, the author analyzes the structure of Mann’s daily life, between Ordnung-Unordnung: the theme of homosexuality and eroticism in the great writer leads to the link between eros and destruction. The analysis reveals the great significance of the Tagebücher both in terms of the reconstruction of the figure of Thomas Mann and, through Mann, in terms of historical and cultural interpretation of the early decades of the Twentieth century
I territori alla prova dei flussi migratori. Un laboratorio pedagogico e sociale?
The aim of this paper is to explore the relevance of a territorial focus in current intercultural educational research. I begin by briefly discussing some issues, that emerge from researches, focusing on the reterritorialization of migrant individuals in the host countries. I then refer to some key aspects of migrant presence in different areas of Italy, and to the differences in how this presence is territorialized in different urban environments. Finally, I suggest that a territorial focus is needed in order to deal with the complexity of educational issues emerging in current diverse learning environments.
The vulnerable business user: the asymmetric relationship between the business user and the platform
The Paper analyses the weakness of the business users in multimedia habitat and, in particular, in the platform economy. It underlines the vulnerabilities of business users, unprotected by consumer law and data protection, in a market characterized by strong dominant position, high network effects and high switching costs. Firstly, it focuses on the governance and regulation power of the platform (and the weaker counter-part bargaining power of the business users) and on the prevision of the measures of suspension and termination of the services by the platform. Secondly, the paper analyses ranking algorithms regulation and differentiated treatment with regard to the interest of business users. Finally, it moves to data law and data access for analyzing article 9 of the Regulation 1150/2019 and suggests the introduction of further instruments to protect the business user and guarantee, at the same time, some improvement for competition
The omnibus directive and online price personalization: a mere duty to inform?
As part of the EU’s New Deal for Consumers, Directive (EU) 2019/2161 (the Omnibus Directive) enshrines into European law a duty for traders to inform consumers who visit their online stores if the prices they are offered have been tailored based on their personal traits by a pricing algorithm. Although this commercial tactic sounds innovative, the phenomenon of Online Price Personalization (OPP) is not new, as retailers have been reported to embark on such practices since the turn of the millennium. Consumers have expressed feelings of discomfort and outrage towards OPP, even in cases where it could work to their advantage (i.e., leading them to pay a lower price when compared to other consumers). This paper will look to offer a clear definition of OPP, setting it apart from similar practices. It will also elaborate on how consumers should be informed about OPP under the Omnibus Directive and seek to outline the current constraints EU law poses to OPP. While EU anti-discrimination law is briefly analyzed, deeper focus will be dedicated to Privacy & Data Protection Law and the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) as means to protect consumers from OPP, regardless of whether it discriminates against them or not. The paper will try to demonstrate how, in several cases, traders deploying OPP may be misleading consumers for the purposes of Articles 6 and 7 of the UCPD, and how the “average consumer” criterion is unfit to legally assess the fairness of OPP under the UCPD.
«Ich befand mich in einer völlig fremden Welt». Neapels kulturelle Fremderfahrung in den Reisetagebüchern der Goethes
The journey to Italy represents for the Goethes a cultural heirloomwhich is passed down through three generations (Johann Caspar, JohannWolfgang, August). It is a real learning experience discoveringclassical antiquity, where their mindscape and emotional world becomewider. Naples embodies the culmination of their Italianjourney, since the city in Southern Italy was usually the last destinationof the Grand Tour in Italy. Foreignness means a positive articulationof cultural difference as such. In their trip journals, the Reisenach Süden shapes itself as a perilous voyage to an unknown land: inNaples they cross inner and outer thresholds between life and death, heaven and hell. My aim in this essay is to investigate both the differentexplorations in their journals and their different cultural relationshipwith the Fremde, which is connected to their own stories, time and social roles
L’etica anarchica come fondamento di alternative educative
In this article, the distinctions between anarchism as a political philosophy are outlined and contrasted with that of liberal democratic theory upon which much of educational philosophy is based. The principles upon which the social anarchist position rests are briefly outlined with respect to the state, authority, and human beings’ way of interacting with and relating to one another. Next, some of the anarchist critiques of state-controlled schooling are considered. Following the discussion of traditional anarchism, largely rooted in late 19th and early 20th century European workers’ movements, some of the foundational principles of contemporary anarchism, beginning in the 1960s and continuing up through the present, are considered. Finally, the article conceptualizes what it might look like to utilize anarchist principles as an organizing framework for education and how these principles might be put into action in a real-world educational context.
The paper aims at demonstrating how for a “second generation interculture” it is necessary to insert the media-educational competences related to Information Literacy in the context of intercultural competences. These competences cannot be entrusted only to figures dedicated to communication, but become transversal for the professionalism of working with migrants. On the one hand some features of “onlife” communication are elements that facilitate hate speech and xenophobic hostility; on the other hand, if properly oriented in an educative and intercultural approach, they can instead contribute to the challenge of “living together”. Following the profound change taking place in the information production and distribution ecosystem, in the context of work with migrants and intercultural relations, competent operators are capable of reading the new logics of onlife life, narrating individual stories by inserting them into a collective narrative framework, mediating between technological devices and their users in a regime of post-truth, educating to critical thinking and responsibility. In this perspective, hybridizing intercultural pedagogy with media education represents an opportunity for social interventions with migrants.
The focus of this article are the letters in Thomas Mann’s Novel Buddenbrooks. While the intersection between the letter and the novel is widely explored in the case of the epistolary novel, lesser attention has been given to letters which are simply inserted in the novels. In the attempt of filling this theoretical gap, the article faces the question if the epistolary inserts in 19th Century German Novel could be seen in relationship with the the epistolary novel. This leads to a general analysis of the function of letters in fictional texts and to a comparison between 18th and 19th epistolary culture. After this short introduction, the article focuses on the discussion of ten letters which we can find in Thomas Mann’s novel. Their function is not merely to evoke distant spaces, in which distant characters live, but also to outline the intimate relationship between the member of the family. Jean Buddenbrook uses letters to his children to give them general advices about their duties towards the family ethics. Twosections, in which we find three interconnected letters, presentthemselves as little “epistolary novels” inserted in the wider plot ofthe novel. After the end of its classical era in the late 18th Century, wemay then consider Buddenbrooks as an important step in a larger development that leads to the rediscovery of the epistolary form ofwriting in early 20th Century
