Responding to a Data Breach in a University
No full textYou are the Academic Registrar at the University of Baloney. A number of students have complained to the Vice-Chancellor of the University which you represent. They are very unhappy that their marks have become public and are available to both fellow students and the general public. The VC has tasked you with trying to establish the source of the data breach. You have to carry out an investigation to find out how the breach has occurred, and which behavioural antecedents contributed to the data breach. You suspect that the data breach was malicious, not accidental but you cannot be certain. In the event that the breach was malicious, you are also determined to establish the motivation and causes for the breach. In the event that the breach was accidental and an ‘honest mistake’, you want to establish how this occurred and whether the member of staff knew what they had done but not “why”
The topic of video surveillance and its countless repercussions.
Get PDFThis focus is based to the analysis of the difficult issue concerning the video surveillance of workers and the necessary compliance with privacy legislation in this area. In particular, first of all, the reference legislation, the interested parties, and the procedure to be respectful of the provisions of the new privacy regulation will be analyzed. Secondly, attention will be focused on specific aspects such as practical tips, useful advice concerning the positioning of the cameras, the possibility of installing fake or inactive cameras. In addition, three further problems related to the topic will be discussed: the eventuality of an impact assessment under artilce 35 GDPR, the related inspection activities, and finally any sanctions in case of violations. Finally, it will be necessary to deepen the guidelines adopted, nationally, by the Italian Data Protection Authority (Italian DPA) and in the supranational context, guidelines no. 3 of 2019 of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). At the end of this paper, a particular case study concerning private video surveillance in public transit will be addressed
L’antico nella storia della pedagogia italiana dell’Ottocento
No full textThe essay reflects on the ancient age as a chapter within a broader history of pedagogy elaborated in Italy from Unification to the Great War. The issue intertwines various themes, such as the idea of a national educational ‘primacy’, on the basis of the myth of the antiquissima Italorum sapientia revisited in the light of the Risorgimento, and the relations woven by positivism between pedagogy and sociology. This allows us to reason on the educational potential of the historical approach, and therefore to focus on the role played by history of pedagogy in the transmission of professionalizing values and beliefs in the framework of teacher training.Riassunto: Il saggio riflette sull’età antica come capitolo di una più vasta storia della pedagogia elaborata in Italia nel corso dell’età liberale, dall’Unità alla Grande guerra. L’argomento, che intreccia diverse tematiche, dall’idea di un ‘primato’ educativo nazionale, sulla scorta del mito dell’antiquissima Italorum sapientia rivisitato alla luce delle sollecitazioni risorgimentali, alle relazioni intessute dal positivismo fra pedagogia e sociologia, consente di ragionare, nel complesso, sulle potenzialità formative dell’approccio storico, e dunque sul ruolo della disciplina nella trasmissione di valori e credenze professionalizzanti nel quadro della formazione insegnante
Le responsabilità educative dei padri nel De liberis educandis dello Pseudo-Plutarco
No full textThis paper examines the pedagogical model outlined in Pseudo-Plutarch’s De liberis educandis. The author (who lived between the 1st and 2nd century AD in Roman Greece, and was therefore a contemporary and perhaps a disciple of Plutarch) proposes to illustrate how children should be educated, taking an eminently prescriptive approach. In this educational process, Pseudo-Plutarch assigns a central role to the head of the family. No longer involved in political and military activity as was the case in the classical polis, fathers must supervise all aspects of their children’s upbringing, especially focusing on their moral education. The novelty of the work lies not only in the central role assigned to the father, but also in refusing traditional educational methods, including corporal punishment. Persuasion and, particularly, the exemplary role of paternal conduct are highlighted as the most effective means for delivering a good education. Riassunto: Il saggio esamina il modello pedagogico delineato nel De liberis educandis pseudo-plutarcheo. L’autore, considerato coevo e forse discepolo di Plutarco, vissuto tra il I e il II secolo d.C. nella Grecia sottoposta all’impero romano, si propone di illustrare, in una prospettiva eminentemente prescrittiva, come si debbano educare i figli. In questo processo formativo lo Pseudo-Plutarco assegna un ruolo centrale alla figura del capofamiglia. Non più coinvolti nell’attività politica e militare come avveniva nella polis classica, i padri devono sovrintendere a tutti gli aspetti dell’educazione dei figli, avendo come scopo principale la loro formazione morale. La novità dell’opera risiede, oltre che nella centralità assegnata alla figura paterna, nella presa di distanza dai metodi educativi tradizionali, tra cui le punizioni corporali. L’esercizio della persuasione e soprattutto l’esempio della loro condotta da parte dei padri sono indicati come i mezzi formativi più efficaci

Wonder: temporality and educational value
No full textThis paper argues that wonder’s temporality and temperament help explain its educational value; and that to some extent its educational value is closely connected with its temporality and its temperament. Much of ordinary life, including education (in the common, descriptive sense of the term) has a temporality that is at odds with care-full attention to the world and allows us little time to think and reflect on the meaning of things or our own actions. Wonder interrupts that stream; it arrests our attention, lets us dwell with things, gives us pause for thought. It thus facilitates truly educational experiences that transform our outlook on the world, and whose temporality falsifies the idea of learning as a linear, additive process

In particular, the school has been strongly affected by the use of the technology for the distance learning. The paper presents the first results of a survey conducted on teachers and students of two high schools in the Turin area about their reactions towards the massive use of the technology during the pandemic 2020. Beside ambiguous feelings of scepticism and pragmatism what clearly emerges is the perception of the social function of the school.
