Artificial intelligence and genomics: the Data protection implications in the use of AI for genomic diagnostics

    Get PDF
This article examines the data protection risks posed by the deployment of artificial intelligence in the field of genomic diagnostics. In particular, AI systems require large sets of personal data to be trained and their outcomes may significantly impact on individuals’ fundamental rights and freedoms. At present, the EU General Data Protection Regulation offers the major protection for personal data, but its provisions might not be sufficient to keep up with the technological development. As such, additional (legal and non-legal) regulatory instruments could be necessary to enhance data subjects’ protection

Donne e leadership. Scenari trasformativi per una parità di genere nelle carriere professionali

Starting from a critical analysis of the results contained in the Gender Equality Index 2019 elaborated by EIGE and looking at the results of a case study addressed to three groups of university students, this article intends to validate the thesis that nowadays occupying leadership positions and doing career in the professional field constitute expectations not only for men but also for women, who think that covering senior positions, enjoying the same opportunities offered to male colleagues, is both a right and also an important milestone for the development of an increasingly fair, democratic and sustainable society. In order to overcome the stalemate it has been for a long time, the problem of vertical segregation requires a serious commitment from the institutions, aimed at transforming into concrete actions the key recommendations of which many European and international documents have been spoken for years including the recent strategy A Union of Equality: Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 enacted in March 2020 by the European Commission.

HOW ARE SUB-SAHARAN TRANS-MIGRANTS ORIGINALLY BASED IN ITALY AFFECTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, AND WHAT IMPLICATIONS FOR ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH?

This contribution is organized in three parts. The first part analyzes how West African migrant harvest workers in South Italy often try to escape from hyper-exploitation by temporarily travelling to other European countries to seek better working and living conditions. While this has always been a complicated endeavour, the COVID-19 pandemicis widely jeopardizing these projects, mainly because of the travel restrictions imposed by national governments within the Schengen area. The second part considers some methodological challenges for ethnographic fieldwork – where social proximity, instead of social distancing is key – in times of COVID-19. By elaborating on the problematic of keeping contact with people in the field in a highly precarious research setup, the article shows the structurally insurmountable differences between the migrant’s living conditions and those of the ethnographic researcher. In the last part, a few key points on the recent trajectories of some migrant workers are reported to highlight how they are affected by the ongoing violence of the European border regime and how their condition is aggravated under the COVID-19 pandemic. Keywords:African Migrants, European Border Regime, Ethnography, Precariousness, Social Effects of COVID-1

L’ALLEANZA DEGLI ATOMI. Crisi pandemica e risposte sociali locali nel tempo del distanziamento / THE ALLIANCE OF THE ATOMS. THE PANDEMIC CRISIS AND THE LOCAL SOCIAL REACTIONS IN THE AGE OF DISTANCING

Through a reflexive and auto-ethnographic analysis, the present article discusses meanings and effects of the governance that, in Italy, followed the 2020 pandemic crisis. The essay shows how, paradoxically, the political imperative of isolating and distancing has produced the emergence of collective sentiments that, at least in some cases, have not resulted in the primacy of the “private”, but in digital forms of political participation. Thus, a type of governance that presented the risk to dissolve the social space through the suspension of public forms of sociability, in certain Italian areas showed to be: a) a measure apt to create forms of sentimental connection between atomized individuals; b) the object of a resistance against the urban authoritarianism of city mayors and presidents of the Regions devoted to populist style of government and interested to use the current crisis as an instrument to climb new political positions; c) a way to relief the individual strains deriving from a crisis that, for generations that have never experienced comparable social traumas, was unprecedented. Keywords:Italy, Pandemics, Grassroot Politics, Science, Conflic
