Contributions of Procedural Memory to Emergent Reading in Older Children
Get PDFSupplemental Materials: https://osf.io/qepjr/Research on emergent reading has focused almost exclusively on children who begin learning to read by age 5-6, despite the fact that many children around the world begin learning to read later in childhood. Little is known about how older children learn to read for the first time. Importantly, procedural learning supports children’s ability to acquire new skills implicitly and apply those skills with automaticity. Procedural learning is therefore thought to support early reading and reading-related skills, such as phonological awareness. However, as children age they may become less reliant on procedural learning. Older children learn new language skills through largely explicit memorization as opposed to implicit procedural learning, and the same is potentially true for language adjacent skills such as reading. Older children may rely less on procedurally supported phonological awareness when reading for the first time and instead rely on explicit skills such as vocabulary. We examined the role of procedural learning in emergent reading across different ages (9-15 years), focusing on low-literacy communities in rural Côte d’Ivoire, where many children remain in emergent stages of reading even at the end of primary school and age for grade is highly variable. We find that the relation between phonological awareness and reading, and vocabulary and reading among older emergent readers depends on procedural learning
Navigating The 'fluid' Scholarly Publishing Environment For African Academics
Get PDFIn the dynamic landscape of scholarly dissemination, the traditional models of academic publishing have been subject to substantive change. However, this has often been met with several challenges including resource constraints, language diversity, historical disparities, and infrastructure gaps. These challenges can slow down academic progress and are especially pronounced on the African continent. To navigate such a fluid environment strategically, academics on this continent must enhance the visibility and impact of their research in order to achieve global recognition to attract more international collaborations and research funding, as well as to facilitate knowledge exchange, collaboration, and access to resources. Here, we explore the impact of a fluid nature of scholarly publishing on the continent and provide an overview of how researchers in Africa may navigate this dynamic environment. Media Consumption Habit Among Students of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Nigeria
Get PDFThe aimed of the study is to examine the preferences and behaviors of young individual concerning media usage among the student of federal polytechnic Bauchi. I sought to determine the types of media content students were expose to, the time allocated to various media sources daily, and their overall perception of media. The study was informed by the inadequacy of literature on the topic in the developing countries; Nigeria inclusive. I employed a well structure questionnaire to collect comprehensive insight into the prevalent media consumption patterns among polytechnic student. one hundred (100) respondents were randomly selected from the school of general studies, school of environmental studies and school of business studies I recommended the implementation of an orientation program within the polytechnic to raise awareness about fostering healthy media consumption habits within the polytechnic student. Media consumption habit are dynamic and may change over time due to technological advancements, shifts in preference and access to new platforms and content. Online streaming services such as Facebook, twitter and Tiktok has more patronage followed by newspaper and radio with very low listener

Digital Technology transforming the nature of commercial contracts: An exploration of English law and the South African law
Get PDFDigital transformation has become an interesting area of research to legal scholars who seek to study how it has impacted regulatory frameworks and in this case, laws that govern commercial contracts. Undoubtedly, digitalisation has drastically changed how business is done and by extension commercial contracts. Digital transformation has far reaching implications on commercial contracts. Thus, Legislative frameworks are needed to regulate online business which culminates into standardisation of commercial contracts, on areas like Block Chain and Artificial intelligence. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to assess how the English law and South African laws are responding, in relation to digital transformation and commercial contracts. Digital transformation (DT) can be traced back to the year 2000 when its use became prevalent as the rapid increase of the use of digital technologies has become important in societies, governments and businesses. Undoubtedly, DT has revolutionised how business and societies function. This particular investigation hinged upon qualitative research tradition, whereby a non-intrusive case study approach was followed. Pursuantly, the empirical basis for this essay included mostly primary and secondary sources such as literature review on articles, books, case laws and relevant Statutes.
