AT HOME IN THE GERMAN LANGUAGE: BILINGUALISM AND LANGUAGE MIXTURES IN THE TEXTS OF RADEK KNAPP
The writers with the so-called migration background are among those people who have undergone a dramatic change of culture and language as migrants and whose curriculum vitae is shaped by this change between languages and ways of life. The new language allows access to a new, different culture, thus also access to a new cultural identity and – last but not least – to a new reading public, which in the case of literary creation can be of crucial importance because the writers deliberately decide on a new addressee group. Although one mostly sees and acknowledges the most important identity marker in language, German as a literary medium of expression and publication in the case of transcultural writers does not establish homogeneous national identities, but fulfills the function of a transit space, a zone, a transcultural space of interpenetration and interweaving the cultural as well as the transformation of national affiliations and cultural identity. The texts of migrant authors reflect the importance of dealing with two languages because the bilingualism of migrants, often in the context of cultural identity, plays a role in migrant literature. The writers try to bring their own bilingualism into the texts, where often both cultures and languages co-exist. In the presentation selected texts are subjected to an analysis by the Polish-Austrian writer Radek Knapp. The article explores the question of where and how bilingualism and language mixtures manifest themselves in the individual texts of Knapp

“ENTWURZELT & UMGETOPFT”. THE LITERARY POTENTIAL OF THE MULTILINGUALISM OF JULYA RABINOWICH
The author and interpreter Julya Rabinowich describes herself as “Janus in Babylon” and characterizes her multilingualism not only as a mediating competence, but also as a changing identity: “Spaltköpfig wird man. Doppelzüngig. Mehrgesichtig” (Rabinowich 2009: 58). Playing with one’s own identities, with lies and truth, with past and future, seems to be the best prerequisite for writing. This contribution examines the poetic potential of exophony using Julya Rabinowich’s novel Spaltkopf, which is read as a draft of a multidimensional identity conflict. In comparison with multilingual perspectives and exophonic spellings by Yoko Tawada, Herta Müller, Dragica Rajčić, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Saša Stanišić and Semier Insayif, the tilting effects between metaphorical and literal readings are particularly focused
Synthetic compounds in German and Chinese
The subject of this article are nominal compounds in German and Chinese which are assigned to the class of synthetic compounds. Such compounds are based on a verb stem, to which are added lexical morphemes and/or suffixes anchored in the grammar and semantics of the (verbal) head. In German, the verb with the suffix forms a derivative which, as the basic word, selects an argument (object or subject) in function of the determinative word. In this way, a government relationship is established between the constituents of the compound. This applies equally to action nouns and agent nouns. In Chinese, there are not formal exponents of the action noun, so the analysis had to be limited to agent nouns. In their derivation, the verb stem and its object mostly form a constituent that acts as a complement of the agent exponent. The examination of such synthetic compounds is carried out from the perspective of the argument. The subject of this article are nominal compounds in German and Chinese which are assigned to the class of synthetic compounds. Text analysis or text interpretation? Some considerations from the text-linguistic viewpoint
Dealing with texts may mean using various research methods. The present paper discusses two such methodological approaches: text analysis and text interpretation. It is concerned, initially theoretically, with the question how these approaches can be explained from the text-linguistics point of view and separated from each other. After that a short text material is used to illustrate the thesis that analyzing and interpreting texts are two different forms of dealing with texts.Dealing with texts may mean using various research methods.
This paper investigates various aspects of grammaticalization of Polish and Kashubian periphrastic verb forms with mieć\miec and bëc and participles. The involvement of factors, which are due to language contact or to autonomous development is thoroughly explored and analyzed in the context of basic grammaticalization parameters. At the same time this contribution should prove with valid arguments the thesis of an inhomogeneous, variably realized and partly of others (all above pragmatic) factors dependent grammaticalization der habere-\esse-forms in the Slavia. So this paper refers both to the canonical differences in the realization of single grammaticalization parameters as well as broader developmental tendencies in the Slavia. This paper investigates various aspects of grammaticalization of Polish and Kashubian periphrastic verb forms with mieć\miec and bëc and participles. Persuasive strategies on websites about contraception
The article discusses typical persuasive strategies used by leading producers of contraceptives on their websites and on the websites of particular contraceptive products from the media-linguistic point of view. The purpose of the paper is to examine illocutions, text-clusters and the text-image relation through which the author wants to persuade about the quality of his products and to present arguments for using hormonal contraception. The article also shows which strategies are used to advertise the pill as a lifestyle and beauty product. The article discusses typical persuasive strategies used by leading producers of contraceptives on their websites and on the websites of particular contraceptive products from the media-linguistic point of view. Advice Literature and Strategies of Normativization
This article is going to follow up the question of normativization within counsellor texts, exemplarily using science guides. A pro argumentation for this is, to not only see normativization in this correlation as a morpho-syntactically and lexical medium – as we usually would – but beyond that also include patterned text structures. These are to be interpreted as appellative (and persuasive) strategies of the authors instance which ought to establish a relationship to the readers who are supposed to be guided by this foundation. This article is going to follow up the question of normativization within counsellor texts, exemplarily using science guides. POLISH IMMIGRANTS IN AUSTRIAN LITERATURE: SOME REMARKS ABOUT AUSTRIAN- POLISH LITERARY RELATIONSHIPS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Austria can look back on a long history of literature which is marked by its inter-/transcultural character. Many of the Austrian authors are cross-border commuters, their intercultural ties give them a “bridge-breaking” function: The literary texts of authors with a migration background today form an integral part of Austrian contemporary literature and give literary and aesthetically interesting impulses to Austrian literature. Many of them want to assert themselves under new cultural conditions, in a different environment, to position themselves in the cultural circle of the new home, or perhaps even to redesign their cultural identity. In their texts one can find not only the themes of a state of cultural transplantation and relocation, but also the examination of questions of national and cultural identity. The article investigates which identity drafts the reader is confronted with in the texts by an author with a migration background who has meanwhile established themself in the German-language literary scene: The analysis focuses on selected texts by Radek Knapp, a literary “bridge builder” of the Polish-Austrian cultural area. The selected literary texts of Knapp are then analysed in order to see how (and if) the depicted figures establish or preserve their identity and how Radek Knapp approaches and deals with the “Austrian-ness”
