Editionsgeschichtliche Aspekte zu Alfred Döblins Romantetralogie "November 1918"

    No full text
Starting from an editorial historical sketch of the edition of revolutionary novel „November 1918“ by Alfred Döblin, the explanation of difficulties which the author had met having tried to publish his work in the unabridged version of the World War, as well as postwar one, was to be found. These difliculties explain also the fact that in Germanistic research on Döblin\u27s work this novel has so far been omitted or very little place was sacrificed to it. The real hero of the novel are the events of the year 1918. They are a surprise for the figures appearing in the novel and they occur above the figures and against their plans. The novel-tetralogy, which consists of almost 2000 pages, is constructed as a mosaic, consisting of many independent stones (novels). Only one figure - Dr. Friedrich Becker, classical philologist, lieutnant from the Ist World War does disappear from the stage of the novel from the beginning to the end. It seems that in his tetralogy Döblin wanted to draw our attention that both idealists and revolutionists are sentenced to defect facing so called „norms“

The result of the discussed studies consists in the fundamental controversy between the wish to resolve to univocality which accompanies every interpretation and recognition of this which is ambiguous, insinuated in the expressionist prose. The article emphasizes the necessity of verification of the statements and generalizations applied and of enriching the criteria of analysis and evaluation of the discussed prose

The problem of purposefulness of creating historical novels and problems connected with their artistic shape became the subject of critical-literary debate carried on in the 30\u27s of this century in Poland. The people taking part in debates connected their own reflections and thoughts on this subject quite often with critical discussion of the selected historical novels of German emigration writers: Thomas Mann, Alfred Döblin, Alfred Neumann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Hermann Kesten and Henry Mann. The first critical opinions after “Henry IV” was published were typical of Polish literary criticism of those years - it was under great influence of French literature and culture. It is worth mentioning that the genre, i. e. historical novel was distinctly determined, in contradistinction to the then popular biographical novel, by the first reviewers (among others Karol Irzykowski). After the Second World War Henry Mann\u27s novel was published several times. Its critical reviews, especially those written at the beginning of the 50\u27s were, however, written from the point of view of doctrinally understood socrealism and contained numerous simplifications and shallowing of the complex problems of the novel. “Weltanschauung weaknesses” were reproached and the reviewers said how it might be better written. This attitude changed in principle in the second half of the 50\u27s. Henry Mann\u27s innovations were begun to be perceived in confrontation with the real invasion of fashionable biographical novels at this time in Europe. The authors of critical reviews thought that Mann opposed the temptation of making the past up to date, he also avoided excessive psychologism. In Polish German studies Henry Mann\u27s novel was treated only marginally

The author\u27s object of analysis are instrumental clauses in Polish, which are mostly reduced to participial constructions, and their translational equivalents in German. The corpus of sentences containing such subordinate clauses has been taken from Th. Mann\u27s novel "Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull". The syndetic structure of instrumental clauses in German is marked by the complementizers indem, damit, dass, dadurch dass. It depends on the translator\u27s creativity to overcome the difficulties arising from the polyfunctional use of these complementizers, especially indem
