Arystoteles i Biblia pod mezoamerykańskim dachem. Chrystianizacja przez asymilację aspektów wierzeń i dziejów nahua w narracji „Historia ecclesiástica indiana” Jerónimo de Mendiety (1525-1604)
The paper examines the use of important themes from the Nahua prehispanic tradition—the story of legendary Toltec monarch-priest Ce Acatl Topiltzin—as well as the huehuetlahtolli speeches, in a vision which the Franciscan friar Jerónimo de Mendieta (1525-1604) unfolds in his work „Historia eclesiástica indiana”. The monk’s approach is compared with the writings of other colonial ecclesiastic authors. Mendieta and Sahagún take advantage of certain substantive analogies between the native religion and the European classical and Christian themes in order to create a new colonial narrative about the Nahuan past and the contemporary realities of the indigenous people. Although Mendieta does not employ such complex and elaborate references to Graeco-Roman mythology as Sahagún, the author of „Historia ecclesiástica” formulates his vision in a similar fashion, taking the themes in question out of the native context and using the story of Ce Acatl as well as the huehuetlahtolli speeches to demonstrate the ancient provenance of the Nahua civilization and show that their immanent values are comparable with Christian ones.
The aim of this paper is to identify and define how elements of the native Mesoamerican Nahuan beliefs are described in „Historia eclesiástica indiana”, the chronicle written by Spanish Franciscan friar Jerónimo de Mendieta (1525-1604). The Catholic monk exploited numerous components of the Nahuan religious system, while this paper focuses on Mendieta’s rendering of the legendary character of Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Toltec priest-emperor as well as on the native speeches huehuetlahtolli, delivered by Nahuan parents to their children. The ecclesiastical historian uses the aforementioned themes to unfold his own ideas and narrative about the past and colonial reality of the Nahua people. Mendieta’s writings are compared with fragments of an encyclopaedia by the Franciscan Bernardino de Sahagún (1499-1590), „Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España”, the key source to studying religion and culture of the precolonial societies in Central Mexico. The paper also draws on the accounts of other colonial authors, such as Motolinia, Olmos and Durán.

Krytyka cywilizacji naukowo-technicznej Zachodu w eko-filozofii Henryka Skolimowskiego
Henryk Skolimowski is a relatively little-known Polish philosopher whose works delve into metaphysics, philosophy of culture, philosophy of technology and ecology. Although he was born and educated in Poland, he left the country immediately after completing higher education to pursue scientific career in the West, in Great Britain, and subsequently the United States. That is why he managed to identify issues that are still relevant today, noticing the problems that individuals and the entire society may face due to consumerism and, above all, the technological mentality geared towards financial profit. Skolimowski noted that although science and technology make life easier in some respects and offer great benefits, they ultimately harm people and the environment.
Skolimowski claims that the crisis of the Western civilization, including contemporary Europe, is to a large extent a crisis of philosophical thought. Today, mechanistic notions still predominate, causing the world to be perceived as a machine. Machines can be disrespected. For this reason, Skolimowski proposes that the current mindset should be replaced with a new metaphysics, and puts forward his project, which he calls eco-cosmology. The Polish philosopher believes that nature and the entire universe should be treated as a sanctuary, with respect for everything that lives. This is a new, pro-ecological vision of the world that can save the world from the negative aftermath of technological development. Skolimowski’s philosophy draws on the style of philosophizing characteristic of the antique philosophical currents, such as Stoicism or Epicureanism. Philosophy should serve to develop the spirituality of individuals and be a tool for more profound critical thinking. Thus, Skolimowski’s philosophical thought is at the same time a return to the sources of European culture.
Polish philosopher and ecologist Henryk Skolimowski developed the paradigm of eco-philosophy, which is critical of the scientific and technical civilization. According to Skolimowski, the latter tends towards mindless expansion and exploitation of the natural environment, which results in the destruction of ecosystems and threatens future generations. The philosopher proposes replacing that culture with another one, based on the principles of sustainable development, harmonious cooperation with nature and respect for cultural and biological diversity. Skolimowski highlights the need to change the mindset and approach to the world in order to provide future generations with a healthy and sustainable living environment
