LAS ANCIANAS MAYAS PREHISPÁNICAS EN LA ICONOGRAFÍA Y LAS FUENTES COLONIALES
The paper offers a revision of the current knowledge concerning elderly Maya women, based on Maya and Spanish colonial sources, as well as iconographic artefacts such as vessels, figurines and mural painting. The main objective is to determine whether information derived from the above sources is congruent and whether it coincides with the current notions about these women. Moreover, special attention is paid to certain roles played by the elderly Maya women, which distinguish them from other female members of the community and, at the same time, bring them almost on a par with men.The paper offers a revision of the current knowledge concerning elderly Maya women, based on Maya and Spanish colonial sources, as well as iconographic artefacts such as vessels, figurines and mural painting. ABOUT THE INSCRIPTION OF THE PRIMUS PILUS G. BAIENIUS IANUARIUS FROM NOVAE
Among the numerous inscriptions from Novae published by the Polish colleagues, that of G. Baienius Ianuarius deserves a special attention. It has been raised on October the 5th 227 AD under the governorship of Lucius Mantennius Sabinus. On the left side of the basis a text in hexameters contains the military carrier of C. Baienius Ianuarius. It is the lecture of this text that the author tries to improve. One of the conclusions is that G. Baienius Ianuarius carried out as a centurio of the legio I Italica a mission in Rome about 223/224 AD. Another conclusion is that the statue represented an aquila, symbol of the legionAmong the numerous inscriptions from Novae published by the Polish colleagues, that of G. AETERNUS AUGUSTUS IN THE IMPERIAL TITULATURE OF THE LATE III AND IV CENTURY A.D
The article is concerned with the title aeternus Augustus and its position in Roman imperial titulature at the end of the third and during the fourth century A.D. Modern authors tend to rate this title among the so-called unofficial imperial titulature, mainly due to the fact that it served to admire the emperor. The paper discusses forms and methods of addressing the emperor who was determined by the appellation aeternus Augustus. The analysis of these enables to appoint, out of the emperors of the discussed period, those few who were officially specified as aeterni. The article is concerned with the title aeternus Augustus and its position in Roman imperial titulature at the end of the third and during the fourth century A.D. Cilicia and the Roman Empire: reflections on Provincia Cilicia and its romanisation
This paper aims at the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long (from the 1st century BC to 72 AD) and complicated by various events. Firstly, it will focus on a more precise determination of the geographic limits of the region, which are not clear and quite ambiguous in the ancient sources. Secondly, the author will thoroughly analyze the formation of the province itself and its progressive Romanization. Finally, political organization of Cilicia within the Roman empire in its different forms throughout time will be taken into account. This paper aims at the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long (from the 1st century BC to 72 AD) and complicated by various events. On the method of determination of level of social activity of veterans in provinces of the Roman Empire (the case of Lower Moesia)
Active involvement of army veterans in local governance and religious life of provincial towns and villages of the Roman Empire is generally determined as the ratio of number of retired soldiers who were magistrates and priests to the total number of veterans, known from all the inscriptions found on the territory of a province. In the opinion of the author, this approach may lead to a misperception of this aspect of the former soldiers’ life and consequently needs to be revised. This paper presents an alternative method of resolving the problem and outlines perspectives for its practical application on the example of material relating to the province of Lower Moesia.Active involvement of army veterans in local governance and religious life of provincial towns and villages of the Roman Empire is generally determined as the ratio of number of retired soldiers who were magistrates and priests to the total number of veterans, known from all the inscriptions found on the territory of a province. AENEAS ANCHISIADES I PII FRATRES. KILKA UWAG O KSZTAŁTOWANIU SIĘ WIZERUNKU ENEASZA W MENNICTWIE RZYMSKIM
The article discusses certain aspects of representations of Aeneas in Roman coinage, focusing in particular on the declining period of the Republic and Augustus’ principate. At the time, Aeneas; father, Anchises, would be depicted on the coins as the sole companion of the former. Although later the figure of the parent carried on a shoulder served as an attribute denoting the Trojan hero depicted on the reverses, the early minted representations of Aeneas were not as unambiguous in that respect. This was due to the fact that portrayals of Aeneas did resemble the manner in which the Catanian Brothers were represented, with both serving potentially as allegories of pietas. The article discusses certain aspects of representations of Aeneas in Roman coinage, focusing in particular on the declining period of the Republic and Augustus’ principate.
