Karol V: Cesarz z ludzką twarzą. Uwagi na marginesie książki Henry’ego Kamena, Carlos Emperador. Vida del rey césar, trad. del inglés de Paz Pruneda, La Esfera de los Libros, Madrid 2017, ss. 465
In this paper, the author undertakes a critical analysis of the findings relat-ing to the life and reign of Charles V, contained in the monarch’s biography by the English historian Henry Kamen. Particular attention is paid here to those elements of biographical narrative in which Kamen does not go beyond the established interpretive canon (as in the case of the imperial election of 1519 and rivalry with Francis I), those which go against predominant views (e.g. the question of the Reformation or Charles’ relationship with his mother), as well as the most controversial assertions (American policy, for instance). The chief intention of the author, who confronts the findings and the opinions expressed by Kamen with the interpretations of other researchers, is to address and fill some of the gaps in the Polish discourse concerning Charles V, where the es-tablished stereotypes surrounding the emperor continue to the iterated. In this paper, the author undertakes a critical analysis of the findings relat-ing to the life and reign of Charles V, contained in the monarch’s biography by the English historian Henry Kamen. Żołnierze a dzikie i obce zwierzęta na linii frontu wojennego w ujęciu autorów antycznych
The aim of this paper is to analyze antique testimonies documenting the relationships between soldiers and the wild and strange animals that armies encountered on the march, in military camps, on the battlefield and during clashes at sea. Thus the paper highlights one of the aspects in the daily life of soldiers of the Greco-Roman world. In a broader sense, the study combines historical research with ethological inquiry. The aim of this paper is to analyze antique testimonies documenting the relationships between soldiers and the wild and strange animals that armies encountered on the march, in military camps, on the battlefield and during clashes at sea. Also, the author attempts to discuss the numerous problems of reconstructing such relationships. The wild and strange beasts on the frontline drew the attention of writers for several reasons: they were attributed the role of divine omens, and therefore their spontaneous appearance may have had an impact on the course of military action; when soldiers saw an animal of a particular species, things were discussed; one would also describe the animals the soldiers observed, hunted, or played with. Thus the paper highlights one of the aspects in the daily life of soldiers of the Greco-Roman world. In a broader sense, the study combines historical research with ethological inquiry
Dwie drogi, dwa ruchy i zdrada – Ukraińskie narracje o rewolucji na granicie i ludowym ruchu Ukrainy
The article analyzes the Ukrainian narrative concerning the role of student protests in Ukraine in October 1990. The narrative in question competes with much more widespread knowledge about the actions undertaken by the so-called Rukh (People’s Movement of Ukraine, Narodnyi Rukh Ukrajiny) and its leaders as the nation strove for independence. The memory of the so-called the Revolution on Granite is passed on by the participants of those events. Thanks to the inclusive narrative, also moderated by the state, the alternative repre-sentation of the past and historiography has no potential to provoke a conflict of memory, being merely a different interpretative approach indulging in hypothetical scenarios of development of Ukrainian democracy had the key demands of the protesters been met (early elections in 1991).The article analyzes the Ukrainian narrative concerning the role of student protests in Ukraine in October 1990. Dzieje Hannibala – literatura antyczna a malarskie wyobrażenia
The author of the article attempts to confront reports concerning the history of Hannibal found in classical literature with selected painterly representations created in later times, i.e. between the late Middle Ages/early Renaissance and he end of the 20th century. This extensive issue, making up a part of a board range of problems classified as the reception of antiquity, requires making references to specific motifs from Hannibal’s history. The author of the text focuses on an analysis of six motifs: an oath sworn by Hannibal upon the Carthaginian gods in his childhood, the dramatic march across the Alps, the exposed motif of an elephant, the personal drama of the Carthaginian commander who finds the severed head of his younger brother, Hasdrubal, the dramatic battle of Zama and finally, the scene of Hannibal’s suicide. As a result of the analyses, the author concludes that painting was inspired by antiquity in a non-obvious manner, as it looked for moral examples based on faithfulness to a given word and religious oath. In those cases, Hannibal’s determination and indomitableness provided the chief inspiration.e

XVII-wieczne medale oraz numizmaty pamiątkowe poświęcone oblężeniu osmańskiemu Wiednia w 1683 roku i jego niektórym aspektom
The author of the paper describes five works of medallic and graphic art associated with medals minted in the period of the Vienna victory. Iconographic analysis of the pieces, in the light of comparison with selected examples of other medals and graphic works, offers an insight into works of art which display similarities to representations on the obverses and reverses of Sobieski’s medals. The author demonstrates that the medals commemorating the victory at Vienna were intended to achieve one fundamental propaganda goal—meet the expectation of the founder of the medal and the party who commissioned it. Leopold I, who in the crucial moment of the relief stayed outside Vienna, sought to demonstrate that the most important element in the clash with the Turks was the sacrifice of the Austrian soldier and the divine providence which, in a time of need, protected the city and its residents. On the other hand, Innocent XI wished to highlight his own efforts made to annihilate the enemy through financial support (papal subsidy) and prayer. The chief aim of the paper is to introduce the reader to five specific pieces of medallic art, answer the questions what propaganda goals they were to accomplish, as well as provide am iconographic analysis, in comparison with selected examples of medals, graphic works, sculptures, and handicrafts

„Inny” jako wytwór imaginacyjnej geografii a globalizacja
This paper discusses creation of the image of the Other from the standpoint of globalization. The objective is to prove the thesis that due to its particular nature, global reality does not tolerate the dichotomy of us vs. them. Also, it is not invalidated by the awareness that one’s own and the alien are more con-tiguous and permeate one another to a greater extent than ever before. The only elements which do change are the contexts surrounding that distinction and the tools of its production and dissemination. Within the consciousness, in the social notions and structures of knowledge, the post-colonial era remains profoundly colonial.
