Tropical climate and time of day: A dual influence on implicit motor imagery ability
International audienceObjectiveMental rotation (MR), which requires cognitive manipulation and spatial transformation of imagined object, is a form of implicit mental imagery that is useful in spatial reasoning and problem solving. As MR ability can be affected by thermal stress, we aimed to evaluate the effects of both the time of day and the TC on MR performance in tropical climate.MethodsA sample of 36 participants acclimatized to a tropical climate performed a MR test under two environmental counterbalanced conditions (tropical climate - TC versus air conditioning - AC) at four times throughout the day (7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and 6 pm).ResultsParticipants yielded higher MR performance in AC than in TC and better scores at 6 pm, compared to other times of the day, regardless of environmental conditions. MR performance was higher when the environment was perceived as more pleasant. Participants further reported a lower feeling of fatigue in late afternoon, when thermal comfort and positive affect were higherConclusionThe results of this study can contribute to adjust implicit imagery guideline to TC by recommending performing MR late in the afternoon

A new generic name to solve the paraphyly of Sticherus C.Presl (Gleicheniaceae, Polypodiopsida)
International audienceGleicheniaceae is an early diverging lineage of leptosporangiate ferns, characterized by pseudodichotomous frond branching. While six genera are phylogenetically supported, Sticherus has been found to be paraphyletic. To resolve this issue, we describe a new genus, Sticheroides gen. nov., to accommodate Sticherus truncatus and S. milnei, based on phylogenetic placement, time divergence depth, and frond architecture. We provide an updated identification key to the genera, descriptions, and comments. Sticheroides diverged from the clade formed by Gleichenia+Stromatopteris+Sticherus approximately 114–117 Mya and is distinguished by buds and rhizomes covered with scales and anisotomic branching. The new genus solves the paraphyly of Sticherus as defined so far, while ensuring nomenclatural stability within Gleicheniaceae
Bridging Knowledge: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Climate Adaptation in the Pacific
International audienceThis panel posed the following guiding question: how can we conduct research that is truly relevant to the countries in which we work? What factors enabled us to formulate useful questions for populations and decision-makers in the context of climate change? What difficulties did researchers and institutional staff encounter when conducting such demanding research? Finally, what results were expected and discussed during the project's development? The panel proposed exploring these issues based on five years of transdisciplinary and applied research on climate change and adaptation conducted in the Pacific Islands. These islands, which are highly exposed to hazards, have also served as testing grounds. Since 2022, the CLIPSSA (Pacific Climate, Local Knowledge and Adaptation Strategies) project has been bringing together climatologists and social scientists with institutional and political actors in Vanuatu, New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna to co-develop a programme aligned with the priorities of local authorities. After a year of consultation with governments, the food-water-agriculture nexus was selected as a common focus, with family farming — central to food security — being chosen more specifically. A crucial component focused on linking indigenous and local knowledge, climate science and public decision-making more effectively to accelerate adaptation. The consortium's researchers presented three contributions: (1) producing future atmospheric projections at a Pacific scale (20 km grid) and at a very high resolution on the islands (2.5 km); (2) analysing future climate impacts on agriculture in Melanesian and Polynesian contexts; and (3) studying the ways in which family farmers combine knowledge, experience and know-how today. Beyond the methods and initial results, the panel examined the constraints and opportunities of such approaches, fuelling a debate on their expected effects
Efficacy of Wood Vinegars on Insect Control, Agronomic Performance and Yield of Open-field Tomatoes in Côte d'Ivoire
International audienceBackground: In Côte d’Ivoire, tomato production suffers significant yield losses due to insect infestations, which are typically controlled using synthetic pesticides that pose risks to human health and the environment. Wood vinegar, a natural liquid obtained from biomass pyrolysis, contains bioactive compounds with insecticidal and biostimulant properties. This study evaluated the efficacy of locally produced wood vinegars as sustainable alternatives for tomato protection. Methods: The experiment was conducted during the 2024 rainy season in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on a 250 m² field with slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5), low in nitrogen (0.04%) and rich in phosphorus (37 ppm). Two wood vinegars (WCV1 and WCV2) were applied by spraying at three dilution rates (1:100, 1:200, and 1:300) and compared to a synthetic insecticide (K-optimal 35 EC) and an untreated control. Insect attack rates, agronomic parameters, product efficacy duration, tomato moisture content, and yield were monitored at 18, 32, and 46 days after transplanting. Results: Treatments with wood vinegars significantly reduced insect attacks, with WCV2 (1:100) showing the lowest attack rates (0–16.7%). These treatments also enhanced plant growth parameters, including collar diameter reaching 13.56 ± 1.39 mm with WCV2 (1:200), vegetative growth of 19.83 ± 2.02 cm with WCV2 (1:300), and the largest leaf area of 1453.79 ± 190.09 cm² with WCV2 (1:300). In terms of yield, WCV2 (1:100) produced 19.54 ± 3.65 t/ha, while fruit shelf life increased from 7 to 21–25 days and moisture content decreased from 72% to 55–61%. The activity duration of wood vinegar treatments ranged between 14.33 ± 1.15 and 16.00 ± 0.00 days. Conclusion: Wood vinegars demonstrate strong potential as eco-friendly tools for integrated pest management, improving yield and post-harvest quality while promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture

National audienceClinical research in France faces a decline in its competitiveness and attractiveness. This study aims to identify the motivations and barriers to participating in clinical research in anaesthesiology and intensive care in France, based on the respondent's gender and their medical or paramedical profession. A questionnaire, validated by the SFAR research network, was disseminated from May to November 2023 via the SFAR's newsletter and social media channels. Results were analysed using R software. A total of 471 individuals responded to the survey (348 physicians and 108 nonmedical staff). Half of the respondents had specific research training, but 77% had less than 10% of their professional time allocated to research activities. The main motivations included interest in the topic, impact on clinical practices and/or scientific knowledge, and the ease of protocol implementation. The primary barriers were the difficulty in patient inclusion, the protocols' complexity, and the lack of funding for clinical study technician time. Barriers were more pronounced among women, particularly regarding the perceived lack of expertise and work overload. Non-medical staff had less academic research training and less time dedicated to clinical research. Recommendations from the National Academy of Medicine highlight the importance of simplifying administrative procedures, structuring and funding research networks, and promoting academic hospital careers to strengthen clinical research in France.

Background: Transvenous Onyx embolization of cerebrospinal fluid-venous fistulas (CSFVF) is an emerging and effective treatment for symptomatic spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). This condition significantly impacts patients' quality of life (QoL) through a variety of debilitating symptoms. Methods: Patients were selected from a prospective database of individuals with CSFVF who underwent transvenous Onyx embolization. All participants completed 13 questionnaires assessing their QoL, before and three months after treatment. Clinical and radiological data were retrospectively collected from the database, and the impact of embolization was evaluated across multiple variables. Correlations and stepwise regression analyses were used to explore relationships between QoL and specific domains including headache, audio-vestibular and psychological symptoms, and spiritual well-being. Results: The study included 30 patients (mean age: 60.4 ± 14.1; female-to-male ratio: 2:1) diagnosed with spontaneous intracranial hypotension and CSFVF, that were treated successfully with Onyx embolization. There was no treatment-related morbidity. All 28 patients with headache reported symptom improvement, with 64% achieving complete resolution. QoL scores related to headache significantly improved post-treatment (HIT-6: p = 0.0119; MSQ: p = 0.0004; MIDAS: p = 0.0236). Psychological symptoms like depression and anxiety significantly decreased, while suicidal ideation resolved when present. Significant audio-vestibular QoL improvements were noted for dizziness (p = 0.002) and hearing disturbances (p = 0.021), but not for tinnitus. MRI findings showed a significant reduction in SIH-related brain abnormalities (mean score: 6.3 ± 1.9 to 1.7 ± 1.5 post-treatment). However, changes in global MRI-SIH scores did not correlate with clinical variables, although brain sagging showed a trend toward correlation with headache intensity reduction (r = 0.37, p = 0.06). Conclusion: CSFVF embolization is associated with significant radiological and clinical improvements, leading to enhanced global quality of life for patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension.
