    Design and Performance Analysis of 500KVA Pumped Water Energy Storage Solar Power Plant for a University Campus

    In this paper, design and performance analysis of 500KVA pumped water energy storage solar power plant for a university campus is presented. The case study site is Akwa Ibom State University Main Campus with geo-coordinates of 4.621437, 7.763922, daily mean sunshine hours of 7.13 hours, mean ambient temperature of 26.74 °C and an annual mean solar radiation of 6.22 kW-hr/m^2/day. The case study is a 24 hours per day power supply system with daily energy demand of 9,600.0 KWh/day which requires hydro turbine with water flow rate of 1.45 /s and pumped water storage reservoir capacity of 413,498.94   to accommodate 3 days of power autonomy. With reservoir water head of 30 m and 7.13 hours of pumping water per day, 40 parallel pumps are required each having a flow rate of 0.1342  and power rating of 47.638 KW.  With solar radiation of 6.22 peak sun hours per day it requires a total of 11,458 PV modules, each rated at 300 watts to form a 3,437.528 KW PV array to power the pumps. Also, a total inverter size of 10,421  is required, split into 40 units of 260.5217 KVA inverter, one for each of the 40 water pumps. The efficiency of the solar power segment alone is 63.5%, the efficiency of the hydro power segment alone is 70.7 % while the combined efficiency of the solar hydro plant is 44.9%.     Development of an Automatic Scissors Screw Car Jack

    In this paper, an existing manual scissors screw car jack was converted to an automatic scissors screw car jack by introducing a sleeve coupling between the manual screw jack and a 12V DC electric motor, which is powered through a direct current energy flow directly from the car battery. The DC electric motor provides a turning effect to automatically power the screw jack for the purpose of lifting the desired load. A screw jack (manual or automatic) is a simple machine used in lifting heavy loads. It becomes very useful in vehicles when changing a punctured tire. It is mandatory for each vehicle plying an approved road to carry a jack for fixing a punctured tire. However, the operation of most car jacks is done manually and also requires prolonged bending or squatting positions when using the jack, making it difficult for most women, the disabled, the elderly, etc., and above all, not ergonomically suitable for the human body due to crouching and squatting positions when in use, which may result in health complications. The automatic scissors car jack developed was successfully tested on five different types of vehicles, with different weights. Five different tests measurements were carried out on each vehicle. The time taken to lift the vehicles 0.03 m off the ground was recorded. They ranged from 74 s to 90 s depending on the weight of the vehicle involved. The heavier the vehicle, the longer the time taken to lift the vehicle off the ground to the predetermined height of 0.03 m

    Circular Microstrip Antennas in 5G: Evaluating Metamaterial Integration

    The rapid emergence of Fifth-Generation (5G) technologies necessitate the development of highly efficient antenna systems with compact design that can support Ultra-Wideband (UWB) frequencies. This work presents the design and enhancement of a Circular Microstrip Antenna (CMSA) for 5G UWB applications using metamaterials. The study focuses on the design of CMSA and the integration of a Complementary Split-Ring Resonator (CSRR) into the circular patch of the CMSA. The design is simulated using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Studio 2023. The system design without metamaterials achieved a gain of 5.28 dBi and a bandwidth of 353.0 MHz. The integration of the CSRR led to an improvement in gain, 5.39 dBi at 3.8 GHz, which is above most of the literature reviewed, although there was a slight reduction in bandwidth to 135.2 MHz. The objectives of achieving a CMSA design with a gain between 5 to 10 dBi while maintaining a compact size were accomplished. Despite the slight reduction in bandwidth observed when integrating the CSRR into the CMSA, the overall results highlight the significant role metamaterials played in enhancing the performance of microstrip antennas for 5G technology applications

The study emphasises the significant potential of blockchain technology to impact various industries in Tanzania profoundly. It offers valuable insights for professionals, policymakers, and researchers, highlighting the need to investigate how blockchain can be applied explicitly within different sectors. Additionally, it suggests practical strategies for seamlessly integrating this technology, considering the unique challenges the Tanzanian ICT sector encounters

    A Psychoanalytic Criticism of Ifesinachi Nwadike’s How Morning Remembers The Night

    In recent times, it appears Nigerian poets are influenced by changes in the country's social-political and economic landscape to such an extent that their artistic expressions are thought to have tilted towards psychological dimension. This observation transcends the social commitment and ideological inclinations often identified with the poets in the past. Therefore, this paper attempts a psychoanalytic criticism of Ifesinachi Nwadike’s poetry, How Morning Remembers the Night, focusing on the instances of psychosocial disorder as an association of socio-economically induced psychological conditions that find expression in the collection. Conceptualising this condition, the study adopts a descriptive research method premised on critical analysis in which attention is given to symptomatic elements like the persona’s recollected experiences, tone and cathartic disposition. Here, a synthesis of the theoretical paradigms of psychoanalysis proposed by Sigmund Freud and Erich Fromm is found rewarding in providing a framework for the conception of the poetry as the persona’s dream text. The study discovers that the psychosocial disorders identified in the collection symptomatically find expression in the poetic persona’s tone in form of emotional disturbances and that they are triggered by memories of societal failings. Consequently, the persona displays the identities of an aggrieved songbird and a griot whose memory is clouded by grief and anguish in reaction to societal foibles. The paper concludes that certain psychosocial disturbances that are noticeable among Nigerian citizens under the same unfavorable societal conditions have permeated Nwadike’s poetry

    This paper explores the dynamics of irregular migration and the objectification of women in Boris Lojkine’s film Hope, highlighting the increasing prominence of these themes in African films. Through an analysis grounded in Martha Nussbaum’s feminist perspectives on objectification, the article examines how the film director portrays the female body as a commodity. The paper posits that sexual objectification is a gendered phenomenon and that the objectified body is almost always the female body. The findings reveal a gendered survival strategy employed by migrants facing insurmountable challenges in their attempts to leave Africa. It concludes that the commodification of female migrants becomes an unavoidable consequence for those who successfully navigate the dangerous and unlawful routes to Europe

    This paper examines diabolism and male-child preference as the cause of mental illness in Moment of Madness, a Nollywood film. Mental illnesses have become like a cankerworm eating deep into the fabric of global societies. Places of treatment that patients' relatives choose for victims depend on the cause of the illness. Factors causing mental illnesses depicted in Nollywood are also under-studied. This paper uses Attribution theory and textual analysis methods to read the cause of mental illness in the film, Moment of Madness. The study exposes that Nollywood films set in traditional African society portray traditional causes like diabolic as one of the root causes of mental illnesses and male child preference as a leading factor for Charity’s use of diabolism to cause mental illness to Mmesoma in the film

    “Hallelujah”, “Iye”, “Hosannah”: Investigating the Conversational Dynamics in Prayers of the ESOCS Church

    This study utilizes Conversational Analysis (CA) theory to examine the discourse and conversational dynamics in the prayers of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim (ESOCS) Church, a spiritually vibrant community known for its fervent, linguistically rich prayers. ESOCS prayers are rooted in distinctive traditions that incorporate scriptural references, ritualistic expressions, and emotional outpourings, offering a rich domain for linguistic analysis. The study analyzes 4 prayer samples, selected from an initial pool of 45 prayer recordings collected across 22 ESOCS church branches worldwide, focusing on dialogicity, foregrounding, cohesion, adjacency pairs, and prosody. The findings reveal that an interactive exchange between linguistic structure, cultural practices, and spirituality characterizes ESOCS prayer dialogue. Dialogicity, rhetorical strategies, and prosody play a significant role in fostering the congregation's active engagement, unity, and reverence. Furthermore, cohesion techniques and the use of adjacency pairs reflect the cultural values that shape the prayer experience, enhancing both clarity and emotional depth. This investigation offers insights into the unique conversational dynamics of ESOCS prayers and contributes significantly to the growing literature on religious discourse analysis, particularly, in the context of prayers

    Selected Physical, Mechanical and Chemical Properties of Fresh Fruit Bunches for Processing of Palm Oil

    Data on engineering properties of palm fruits enable the design of machinery for optimal production of palm oil. Specific physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of fresh fruit bunches are examined in this study. Fresh palm fruit's selected mechanical, chemical, and physical characteristics were determined using standard formulas and equations. One hundred fresh fruit bunch samples were used to ascertain the physical characteristics of the fruit bunches. While the chemical properties were ascertained using suggested standard equations and formulae, the fresh fruit bunches were tested for their strength properties under compression when loaded under an INSTRON Universal Testing Machine. Using the Microsoft Excel program, statistical analysis was performed on the collected data. The average length, breadth, thickness, geometric mean, sphericity, surface area, true mass, true volume and true density mean for palm fruits were 3.35±0.48 cm, 1.92±0.32 cm, 2.24±0.33 cm, 2.42±0.25 cm, 0.73±0.08 cm, 18.61±3.62 cm2, 7.99±1.81 g, 7.01±1.72 cm3, 1.17±0.24 g/cm3 respectively. The average static coefficient of frictions for palm fruits were 0.46±0.13, 0.64±0.18, 0.57±0.21 and 0.59±0.22 while the average angle of reposes was 24.48±6.08, 31.62±9.14, 29.26±6.80, and 29.91±9.11 on wood, mild steel, glass and stainless-steel surface respectively. The energy at break, force at break, deformation at break, strain at break, and stress at break for the palm fruits were 6.87±0.95 J, 2.22±0.80 kN, 14.58±3.02 mm, 0.36±0.08 mm/mm and 123.46±44.31 MPa respectively. The moisture, ash, fat, crude fibre, crude protein, and carbohydrate contents (proximate composition) of the palm fruits were 22.80±0.02%, 0.52±0.01%, 46.47±0.06%, 18.66±0.01%, 2.4±0.21%, and 9.14±0.30% respectively. The sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and zinc contents of the palm fruits were 58.75±0.07 ppm, 94.20±0.14 ppm, 68.45±0.64 ppm, 5.21±0.00 ppm, 1.22±0.00 ppm, 1.60±0.00 ppm and 55.70±0.28 ppm respectively. This study has provided relevant information which will help engineers to develop a more efficient palm fruit extraction machines that will in turn increase the productivity and profitability of the farmers and food processors. These measured engineering properties of palm fruits help in development of palm fruit processing machines

    Systematic Review of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses in the Nigerian Mining Industry

    Nigerian mining sector (NMS) has been ranked as second industrial sector with numbers of occupational injuries and illnesses (OII) that pose serious social and economic impacts on workers and society. Meanwhile, little is known about the specific aspects of OII in the mining sector that have been studied in the literature. As a result, this study seeks to review the existing research on workers' OII with the intention of identifying the primary causes, symptoms, and influencing factors that may relate to a persistent rise of injuries and illnesses in the NMS. This is to determine the sector dynamic in relation to OII and provide stakeholders in the sector with lack data that are required for planning, implementation, and monitoring sustainable OII. The study employed widely accessible electronic databases (Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) to perform a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles from 2010 to 2023. The causes, symptoms, and influencing factors of OII in the mining industry were highlighted in the compilation of pertinent data. The study search yielded 210 peer-reviewed publications with 70 publications retained after systematic screening and 20 were retained for final analysis. The study identified eight major causes, four body parts that are most harmed, and five primary symptoms of OII in the NMS. Also, the factors that influencing OII in NMS were classified as sociodemographic, behavioural and organizational/management factors. The study concluded that the use of personal protective equipment, provision of first aid and medical facilities, enactment of safety laws and policies and adequate safety training and supervision are the most common ways that can reduce the high rate of OII in the Nigerian mining sector
