Early Detection of Congenital Heart Diseases among Infants Using Artificial Neural Network Algorithm
Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) detection has continued to witness a consistent increase in research attention. CHD diseases are vast and also span across diverse demographics, without sparing pregnant women, unborn babies, or newly born babies. The aim of this study is to develop a detection model capable of detecting heart disease among infants with high accuracy and to also suggest solutions to manage it. To achieve this, the CHD types were identified to develop a data model that considered infants. The data model was processed through imputation, feature selection, and transformation using the imputation method and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). After the data processing stage, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm is adopted and trained with the data to generate the model for the detection of the CHD. Comparative analysis was used to evaluate the performance of the models in comparison with other models adopted in other works, considering metrics that defined the success of the detection models. The results showed that the ANN has the best detection outcome with an accuracy of 97.44%. Although the use of Logistic Regression algorithm attained a high level of performance with an accuracy of 95.00%, but it still falls below the proposed ANN algorithm. Another highly performing algorithm is the use of Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) which achieved an accuracy of 92.00%
Empirical Mode Decomposition Based Amplify and Forward Technique for Cooperative Cognitive Radio System
The rapid growth in the mobile industry due to increase in number of users accessing diverse services causes a high demand for radio spectrum. Nonetheless, the radio spectrum allocated for different wireless communication services is restricted. Cooperative Cognitive Radio (CCR) technique with Amplify and Forward (AF) relaying protocol used to address the problem suffers from noise amplification resulting in poor reception at the destination. Hence, in this paper, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) based AF technique for CCR system was carried out to improve the performance of the existing CCR with AF relaying protocol. The transmitted signal from Primary User (PU) was received at the Secondary User (SU) where SU superimposed its own signal using Exclusive OR (XOR) rule. The combined signal from XOR was made to pass through EMD and amplified using AF by multiplying with the relay gain. The amplified signal was radiated to PU and SU receivers during the second hop transmission. The multiple copies of the receive signal at the SU receiver at different number of path (L = 2, 4) were combined at destination using Maximal Ratio Combiner (MRC). Mathematical expression for Bit Error Rate (BER) and Throughput (TP) were derived using the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the Nakagami-m fading distribution. Extensive simulations using MATLAB R2021a were employed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed technique and evaluated using BER and TP by comparing with the existing AF CCR. The EMD based AF technique proposed gave better performance with 75.2% reduction in BER and 21.86% increase in TP over the existing AF technique for CCR. The proposed technique can be deployed to improve the performance of cooperative cognitive radio system
(Re) Examining the Functions of Dùndún Talking Drum in the Inter-Cultural Music Process of Africa and the African Diaspora
Whenever the hourglass-shaped drum 'Dùndún' is mentioned, minds of music scholars readily go to the hourglass-talking drum of the Yorùbá-speaking people of West Africa. However, this does not mean that this musical instrument is peculiar to the Yorùbá as its distribution- in its varied forms- across West Africa is general; covering an area stretching roughly from Senegal to the Cameroun Republic1. This talking drum's compositional and performance techniques have become highly specialized and standardized because of its high usage in both the social and religious celebrations of the Yorùbá. This paper focuses on the use of Dùndún to perform other sonic functions beyond Yorùbá speech melodies and oral poetry. Intercultural music theory, being used in this study has shown that the prospect of Dùndún talking drum usage within the context of diasporic music performances proffers greater potential for the instrument as it has been favourably utilized by internationally renowned musicians in contemporary popular music both within and outside the shores of Africa. Furthermore, that interested musicians in the diaspora will find this instrument useful for their subsequent compositions and performances will help redefine the socio-cultural worldview of the music of Africa
Assessing the Role of the United Nations in Countering Global Terrorism: Issues and Challenges
Global attention has shifted to terrorism since 9/11 multiple terror attacks on the United States. The study examines the efficacy of the United Nations in galvanizing global effort against terrorism, 2001-2021. It argues that while the global body didn't envision the emergence of terrorism, the global body has strained apace with global issues, more so with terrorism both before and especially since the multiple terror attacks on the United States on 9/11. The United Nations has provided an outlet on global response. Employing the use of secondary source and relying on archival materials, the study found that the UN has since stopped efforts in leading consensus on the devastating impact of terrorism on global security if not quickly checked. Thus, unlike arguments by some critics, the UN, especially since 2001 has remained unrelenting in arguing for a global consensus for a unanimity to define terrorism. The study recommends that terrorism can best be defeated with a shift in the structure of the international system from the perception of the ''we versus them'' approach to an all-embracing system coordinated by the United Nations
Personological Creation of Language: The Feminist Perspective
This research stems from Helene Cixous's call for women to invent their language – the language of feminism – by interpreting their identities as a science of feminine creation. This science is a protest of women's subjugation and exploitation using symbolic language to question male supremacy. Thus, this research investigates sexual differentiation as related to language differentiation between men and women. This investigation aims to develop standards and deploy a feminist-specific language known as l’ecriture feminine. Significantly, the argument seeks to challenge masculine realities, judgments and perspectives manifested in language deployment. A creative writing-based methodology is used, and the primary author is Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, together with other relevant authors and feminist critics who have demonstrated in their works, women's patterns of reasoning and language. The goal is to create a language of feminism that is a conscious effort to erase or contrast the language of patriarchal imaginary order, which is fundamental in language codification. Consequently, female and male writers who share this position are encouraged to develop and rewrite popular narratives to establish the language of feminism as a field of exploration and use in the modern world
Partnering for Security: The Role and Imperatives of Local Non-State Actors in Nigeria
Nigeria is a country blessed with natural potentials that can be harnessed for development. Ironically, she is currently confronted by myriads of security challenges that have impeded the march to development. With the challenges overwhelming the state's capacity to provide adequate security for lives, properties and threats to the statehood at large, partnering in the process has, therefore, become a ready alternative. Unfortunately, even with the plethora of legal security agencies, the security challenges have assumed a demographic dimension in the country with peculiarity found in the various regions. In the attempt to discuss succinctly the Local Non-State Actors (LNSAs) as partners in the security management of the country, this paper identified the forms of LNSAs, the propelling reasons that necessitated LNSAs in the Nigerian context, their operational challenges, the emerging security challenges and demographic spread. It concluded that security challenge is widespread in the country with recorded deaths and loss of properties. Therefore, the idea behind LNSAs is a welcome development that deserved encouragement, particularly now that the federal government has risen to the challenge of recognizing community policing in the country. But, more importantly, they should be closely monitored to avoid misuse and abuse
Assessment of Mine Plans for Production and Variations at Ibese Limestone Mines
This research investigated the mine plans used for the production target and annual production of limestone for the past seven (7) years. The actual amount of limestone produced per year in tons was computed to determine the variations in the mine's production and the life span of the reserve of limestone deposits. A new mine plan was proposed, and a targeted amount of limestone production per year was suggested. The mine plans for the mine's production were generated from 2014 to 2020 using a complete data collection system for Real Time (RTK) GPS and Total Stations with in-field coordinate geometry called SurCE by Carlson Software. The total production target for the seven (7) years was 87,017,146 tons and the actual production was 76,313,056 tons. The total variations for the years under this assessment were -10,704,090 tons except for the year 2018 when the actual production was higher than the production target of 511,179 tons. The volumetric reserve estimation revealed that the total volume of the limestone reserve is 5,052,236,090.186 tons. The expected production per week was computed to be 356,400 tons/week, expected monthly production, (EMP) was estimated to be 1,425,600 tons/month. The expected production year, (EPY) was 17,107,200 tons/year and the life span of the limestone deposit, (LS) was computed to be 295.34 years. It can be suggested that the company should target a production rate of 1,425,200 monthly and 17,104,200 per year. This suggestion can be achieved if there is enough investment in terms of skilled labour, heavy-duty machinery, and equipment which will cost-effectively boost production
Utilisation of Internet of Things to Design a Gas Detector Device for Monitoring Gas Leakages in Underground Mines
The primary goal of the research was to design, evaluate, and fabricate a gas detection device using the Internet of Things (IoT). This subject matter was appropriate as it addressed a fundamental and significant facet of contemporary living in the mine. The objectives of the project were to design a gas detector device using an Arduino microcontroller, construct a gas detector device that rings a buzzer and sends an alert to an Android device on detection of harmful gas in the mine, and implement a gas detector device using the internet of things. Background data on gas detection technologies, pertinent standards and guidelines, field research, and durability factors related to the mines were gathered in order to define a test method. Arduino Uno was used as the control unit with other necessary components. Upon completion of the project, the gas detector device using the Arduino Uno was tested and found to work optimally.
Remote Detection of Leakages from a Compromised Buried Water Supply Pipe through Geophysical Measurements
The continuous drastic loss of stored water at a private household presumed to be caused by leakage(s) was subjected to geophysical investigations with a view to delineating the source(s) of the leakage(s). The Spontaneous Potential (SP) and Electrical Resistivity (ER) methods were deployed for the study. Measurements were taken along four (4) traverses at two intervals – firstly when the water supply valve from the overhead storage tank was closed and secondly when it was opened. The Total Field array was adopted for SP measurements with constant station separation of 0.5 m. ER measurements were taken via the Wenner array with electrode spacing (a) varied with an interval of 0.5 m from 0.5 m to 1.5 m. SP data were presented as profiles and maps while ER data were presented as 3-D resistivity depth stacks. SP values varied from -100 mV to 350 mV during the two measurement periods. ER values also varied from 100 ohm.m to 1200 ohm.m during the closed valve period and 100 ohm.m to 900 ohm.m during the opened valve period. During the closed valve period, pipeline routes were interpreted as manifesting oval-shaped high potential anomalies with central linear trend on the SP map; and as linearly-trending high resistivity intrusion within low resistivities on resistivity maps. The disparities between the results of closed valve and opened valve measurements were pointers to leakage-induced inhomogeneity in the subsurface. The diminished high potential SP anomaly and the anomalously low resistivity specks within linearly-trending high resistivity values were regarded as the source of leakage
Effect of aqueous extract of Mondia whitei fruits on high sucrose-induced oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster
Background/Aim: High sugar intake plays an important role in oxidative stress, which has been linked to development of diseases like diabetes. In this study, the effect of aqueous extract of Mondia whitei (AEMW) fruits on high sucrose-induced oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster was investigated. Materials and Methods: Adult flies (1 – 3 days old) were exposed to graded doses of AEMW for 12 days to determine the safe dose. Based on this, new flies were grouped into 5 (n = 5; 40 flies per vial). Group 1 served as control and were fed with basal diet, and group 2 with basal diet containing 30% sucrose. Groups 3 and 4, in addition to diet containing 30 % sucrose, were exposed to 0.25 and 0.5 mg AEMW/g diet, respectively, and group 5 flies were exposed to diet containing 0.5 mg AEMW/g diet only. Treatment lasted for 7 days. Biochemical assays such as glucose level, markers of antioxidant and oxidative stress were carried out to assess the effect of high sucrose and/or AEMW on flies. Results: Doses of AEMW up to 0.5 mg/g diet was safe for the flies. High sucrose diet significantly (p < 0.05) increased the level of glucose and oxidative stress markers, and reduced the levels of antioxidant parameters when compared to the control. These changes were prevented by the doses of AEMW. Conclusion: It can be concluded that AEMW possesses anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant properties, and could be suggested to act against oxidative stress induced by high sucrose in fruit flies
