Driving and Embracing Change: Learning and Teaching Languages and Communication in Higher Education

    No full text
When considering the title of this book, we, as its editors, had to reflect on the notion of change. Change is constant and inevitable, but fundamental changes do not happen overnight. Such changes result from actions and measures that address deep, complex and interrelated systemic issues, and thus require a shift in mindset. Fifty years ago, Gregory Bateson (1972/2000), an early advocate for ecological thinking, warned that solving the challenges facing society requires a re-examination of the ideas that have dominated thought since the industrial revolution. For Bateson, ecological thinking meant more than adding an environmental perspective and implied the need to revisit the core values and principles that form the basis of societies. Similarly, in the field of education, as Selby (2000) has argued, ecological thinking involves a shift to a more holistic worldview and an awareness of the interconnections and interdependencies of power issues influencing culture, development, environmental and social justice, equity, health, and peace, as well as the interplay between our outer and inner worlds and between different disciplinary epistemologies. These ideas have special significance in the dynamic landscape of contemporary higher education, which faces complex challenges and often unforeseen and/or unpredictable changes and events, such as shifts in government policy or the COVID-19 pandemic. The constantly evolving changes necessitate strategic, future-oriented planning and decision-making in addressing the most critical questions relevant to universities today: the provision of education that is accessible and equitable to all and that meets the changing needs of economies and societies; internationalisation and the growing linguistic and cultural diversity at universities alongside the increasing dominance of English in academia; financial sustainability and the increasing competition for funding; technological advancements; and the well-being of both students and staff. These questions are linked to larger social, economic, geopolitical, technological, ideological, and environmental changes, which directly or indirectly influence higher education: intensifying global migration, deepening social inequalities, escalating armed and cyber conflicts and threats, increasing political/ideological polarisation, the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation that diminishes trust in science, ethical issues surrounding AI, and the impending environmental crisis. On a more practical level, interest and investment in learning languages other than English is diminishing. These challenges are relevant in the Finnish higher education context, too, and they require flexibility and continuous adjustments not only in institutional strategies and frameworks but also in mindsets, pedagogical practices, and working cultures

    K. F. Karjalainen’s Eastern Khanty Text Collection (1899–1901)

During fieldwork conducted between 1898 and 1902 in Western Siberia, Kustaa Fredrik Karjalainen traveled through the entire area where Khanty (also known as Ostyak) was spoken. He collected an abundant amount of lexical material from each dialect, and in addition he made grammatical sketches and collected folklore texts. Due to Karjalainen’s untimely death, he was unable to publish his collection. The Eastern Khanty text collection presented in this work is the hitherto-unpublished last part of Karjalainen’s legacy. It is of great significance from the point of view of both linguistics and folkloristics, as it is the oldest Eastern Khanty text corpus, and it documents genres that were previously unknown. The present work comprises a phonematic transcription of the manuscript, its English translation, and notes explaining linguistic and folklore phenomena. In addition, it contains a linguistic description of three Eastern Khanty dialects (Tremjugan, Vasjugan, Likrisovo), and word lists of these based on the texts. A detailed introduction to the research history of Khanty and a summary of the contribution of the texts to ethnographic research place the presently published source into a wider context and set out further potential directions for research.During fieldwork conducted between 1898 and 1902 in Western Siberia, Kustaa Fredrik Karjalainen traveled through the entire area where Khanty (also known as Ostyak) was spoken. The Declaration for Open Science and Research states that "In the research community, responsible openness is a part of everyday research throughout the research process, and research organisations have assessment practices, incentives, and services in place to support this." This also applies to the thesis process, and this policy component on open access to theses applies to all theses completed in higher education institutions (bachelor’s and master’s theses at universities and universities of applied sciences, advanced studies theses, licentiate theses, and doctoral theses).  Open science enables a broader use of research results by the research community and society, thus increasing the impact of research as well as the level of scholarship and innovation in society. Openness and the transparency of the process are also intended to support the quality of research. In the context of universities of applied sciences, a thesis is a task that requires and demonstrates expertise and takes into account aspects of the challenges of working life, thus making openness particularly useful from a professional point of view. The policy component on open access to theses has been developed to serve these basic objectives from the perspective of theses. The Declaration for Open Science and Research states that "In the research community, responsible openness is a part of everyday research throughout the research process, and research organisations have assessment practices, incentives, and services in place to support this." Society's trust in research-based knowledge relies heavy on following good research practices. Research information is utilised at different stages of a decision-making process insociety. Research-based knowledge can provide a background for the goals of the government’s proposals and justify the significance of the measures needed to achieve these goals. The reliability of decision-making in society is based on the purposefulness and independence of the decision-making. A dive and well-documented knowledge base used in preparing the laws and decision-making in society increase the openness of the process and allow the decisions to be assessed. In organisations conducting scientific research, the researchers are guided by good scientific practices, which help support the culture of open scholarship. This document is a recommendation by the National Open Science and Research Coordination, which serves as complementary guidelines to the Policy for Open Scholarship. The recommendation is aimed at the drafters of legislation and comprises best practices for building a solid knowledge base on the basis of principles of responsible research. The key purpose of the recommendation is to supplement the guidelines for drafting government proposals.Society's trust in research-based knowledge relies heavy on following good research practices. Moral Dimensions of Humour: Essays on Humans, Heroes and Monsters

    No full text
This volume explores the concept of humour and its relationship with human behaviour. The interdisciplinary essays in this book cover a wide range of time, from the sixteenth century to the present day. They delve into various cultural contexts, challenging social norms and prompting readers to reflect on the ethical implications of humour. The collection highlights the varied metaphors of heroes and monsters in each case study, which are crucial to understanding the moral spectrum of human existence. These metaphors represent aspirational ideals and darker aspects of what it means to be human. The book encourages readers to critically analyse the complexity of humorous objects and social practices in contexts like digital culture, mythical folklore, entertainment technology, or politics, recognising their interconnectedness with societal issues and emphasising that different settings might call for different interpretations.Tässä teoksessa tarkastellaan huumorin käsitettä ja sen suhdetta ihmisen käyttäytymiseen. Kirjan luvut kattavat laajan ajanjakson ulottuen 1500-luvulta nykypäivään.

    No full text
Romances and other narratives about relationship formation are generally considered popular literature in contemporary research, and they have been studied typically in a feminist framework and from the perspective of cultural studies. This edited volume [Romance stories in the 21st century. Plots and breakdowns of relationship formation in literature and popular culture] opens a new perspective on 21st-century couple-making narratives by examining the topic crossing media boundaries. The articles deal with for example seduction narratives, dating reality television, video game romances and chick lit, as well as their parodies, from the starting points of literary studies. Understanding the mechanisms, characteristics and history of these narratives also opens up a critical perspective on the social phenomena they present.  The book shows that the beginning of a romance is still a popular topic in the 21st century media, with many kinds of narratives and counter-narratives. In addition to utilizing patterns typical of the genre, the works may also comment on romance narratives as conscious cultural models and present them, for example, as a symbolic resource that helps the individual to reflect on their own life. In the 21st century, romance stories have been more inclusive and ethically aware, while also being incorporated into less traditional media such as video games.
