[English] In this study, radiation shielding and dose calculations for facility installing new PET/CT imaging equipment were compared using analytical formulas and the PHITS code. Calculated the dose rate by placing a 444 MBq radioactive 18FDG point source in a room with 17 cm thick concrete walls. While the dose remained within permissible limits in the controlled area, it was 2.7 times higher in the uncontrolled area. To enhance radiation shielding in the uncontrolled zone, an additional 7 mm of lead was estimated to be necessary for the walls.

This study analyzes how the culture-specific items (words and phrases) of the Mongolian language have been translated into English based on literary examples. The translation of the culture-specific word is unique and difficult for foreigners to understand because it is inextricably linked with the language, culture, and customs and reflects the national characteristics. As a result of this research, the author has analyzed the literary translation of culture-specific words (realia), especially how culture-specific words in literature were translated from Mongolian into English. The study was done based on the selected Mongolian novel. During the research work, some culture-specific words were left untranslated, and in some cases, one word was translated in many different ways. In addition, there are cases where the original text's eloquent, historical, and cultural examples were omitted during the translation process. Therefore, this work will contribute to the promotion of our national heritage and researchers researching this topic

    No full text
In the present study, we aimed to assess the critical thinking skills of the learners using the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Test and to investigate whether these skills are needed to be improved and the method of planning and organizing the lesson is beneficial for developing the skills. In our study, a total number of 95 bachelor students from I-V levels, who chose to study the subject as a core and an elective class, participated. Our findings indicate that the students’ critical thinking skills are not sufficient and a further study on identifying the influencing factors, choosing, experimenting, and practicing effective strategies for enhancing the critical thinking levels needs to be conducted

Монгол оюутнуудын aнгли хэлний /f/ авиалбарын дуудлагад спектрограмм бичлэгийн (праат) арга ашиглан хийсэн дүн шинжилгээ (МУИС-ийн ШУС-ийн англи хэлний дунд түвшний оюутны жишээгээр): An analysis of the english phoneme /f/ produced by mongolian students using the spectrogram praat method (A case study of the intermediate level students at the School of Arts and Sciences, NUM)

    No full text
Our study investigates the English phoneme /f/production among two cohorts comprising 41 intermediate-level Mongolian students. We focus on formants 1 and 2 of the /f/ phoneme, specifically examining intermediate students at the School of Arts and Sciences of the National University of Mongolia (NUM). We apply Bulgantamir S.'s theoretical framework for formant classification. The selection of words featuring the "f" phoneme is based on their contextual positions within the research parameters. Utilizing the spectrogram PRAAT method, our experimental phonetics research explores/f/ phoneme production among Mongolian students. Through this analysis, we aim to contribute valuable insights into the articulatory patterns of intermediate-level students in a non-native English phonetic context

Perspectives on Poverty and Respect in Mongolia: Terms, taboos, taxonomies and the sustainability of translations

    No full text
This article examines the complex and nuanced perspectives on poverty and respect in Mongolia, focusing on terms, taboos, and taxonomies surrounding poverty and their implications for a culturally appropriate phrasing. It highlights challenges of translations from a seemingly international development jargon into Mongolian, which often appear inadequate or even counterproductive. Our research is based on a mixed-method pilot study investigating the connotations of Mongolian terms related to poverty. Through surveys, interviews, discourse analysis, etymological and semantic studies of poverty-related terms, the authors explored social challenges perceived by Mongolians including experiences of discrimination faced by those in ‘difficult living conditions’. Moreover, we investigated the societal tendency to avoid addressing poverty directly in order to find out how it is connected to structural discrimination and the perpetuation of social inequalities. Given that terms may be acceptable in one context but disrespectful and stigmatizing in another, the authors advocate for a culturally sensitive use of terms. Based on the findings of our study, we provide constructive suggestions for a more appropriate terminology that focuses on empowerment and the expansion of opportunities. This analysis contributes to the understanding of complex dynamics between language, poverty, and social inclusion in Mongolia

Weak Heads at the Interface: A View from Temporal Adverbial Clauses

    No full text
This paper proposes that weak heads in Chomsky’s (2015) sense are not only syntactically weak (i.e., unable to provide a label on their own), but also morpho-phonologically weak. To illustrate how this works, this paper examines temporal adverbial clauses (TACs) in Japanese, showing that the presence/absence of what we call Geis-ambiguity in Japanese TACs correlates with the presence/absence of yori ‘than’ in the clauses. Based on Miyamoto’s (1996) argument that this ambiguity arises due to operator movement, we propose that there is a covert weak head which hosts the relevant operator in its specifier. Crucially, the weak head in question can only be present in the presence of its morpho-phonological host, i.e., yori. We further demonstrate that this covert weak head, unlike an overt noun, cannot be referred to by a null resumptive element, and suggest that the weakness in the labeling sense could potentially lead to weakness at LF
