Abstract: The very first demonstration of Mongolia’s People Republic was organized on December 7, 1989 in Khovd by students and teachers of the Khovd Teachers’ Training College. It was concluded that the Khovd demonstration was the first of its kind because it met all eight criteria, according to criteria developed by researchers studying demonstrations. To summarize briefly, the demonstration was unique in a way that firstly, the first large demonstration that drew  about  250 people, secondly,  it was held without permission, and thirdly, the first call for the resignation of the Politburo and the Government. Fourthly, it was the    first demonstration to revive national ideology, history and culture, courageously raising the portrait of Genghis Khan and fifthly it was partly influenced by ethnic factors. Research shows that the protests led to the resignation of the Politburo in March 1990 and the peaceful change of regime in Mongolia. The perestroika of the Soviet Union and the perestroika of J. Batmunkh in Mongolia also affected the Khovd demonstration. In addition to students and teachers, Khovd residents took part in the demonstration. The study was relied on the archive materials from the General Archives of Mongolia, Mongolian People Party and Khovd aimag as well as interviews with demonstrators
