(2) a. Jag tror det inte. (vs. Jag tror inte det.)

Social Media Logic and Emotional Mobilization: A Study of Zelensky’s Twitter Communication during 2022 Russian-Ukrainian Conflict
Modern wartime propaganda is increasingly influenced by social media. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has opened up a cyberwar of discursive gaming beyond the military front. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has used Twitter as a crucial tool for communicating with the world. This choreographed propaganda mechanism has helped foster a conducive atmosphere for gaining international support, and at the same time makes Zelensky’s Twitter communication practice a classic case for studying the dynamic relationship between social media and emotional mobilization. Therefore, this paper cuts through the theoretical lens of mediatization and analyzes the tweets posted by Zelensky throughout 2022 using a combination of content analysis and textual analysis. It is found that (1) a narrative of compassion becomes one of Zelensky’s key strategies for mobilizing global public emotions. Ukraine in Zelensky's discourse is not a dehumanized “other” without any subjectivity. Instead, Russia’s aggression is directly portrayed as a trauma to the flesh and blood for the West. (2) the emotions disclosed in Zelensky’s tweets are generally positive. He refuses to immerse himself in the grief of Ukraine’s loss, preferring instead to use a rigid tone to unite the population at home, with impassioned words calling for resistance. (3) Zelensky is consciously constructing an ideological alliance that believes deeply in Western values such as liberal democracy and is resisting restrictions on Russia in every way. He continually emphasizes Ukraine’s political and cultural identity as a future member of the European Union and presents an international image of solidarity through performative Twitter engagements with world heads of state on Twitter. Despite these findings, this study unexpectedly finds that Zelensky’s practice shows more features of mass communication than that of social media, whose logic is supposed to prompt him to employ stronger emotion when it comes to controlling public opinion. He is a solemn president dedicated to public diplomacy rather than a politician who makes a big deal out of the trivial details of the war. This leads to the conclusion that even in the war scenario of the 2022 crisis, Zelensky’s emotional mobilization strategy was actually relatively restrained and conservative
Training High School Students in Resisting Disinformation and Conspiracy Theories – Preliminary Findings and Experiences from an Ongoing Research Project
This paper draws on findings from an ongoing research project called ”Effects of a multi-module intervention designed to increase critical thinking and the ability to identify misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories in high school students”. The aim of this project is to empirically evaluate an educational intervention consisting of six one-hour sessions. The sessions include traditional lectures regarding critical thinking, misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories but also includes a game (Bad news), and group discussions, all designed to train high school students in critical thinking as well as the capacity to identify disinformation and conspiracy theories. The project combines competences from media and communication studies, psychology, political science, and data communication, and the intervention has so far been implemented in three Swedish high schools. In the paper we discuss preliminary findings and experiences drawn from the first phase of the project. We will also discuss the applicability of the intervention, and challenges that we have identified
Trust in Authorities, Media, and its Impact on Conspiracy Beliefs: A Cross-Cultural Study
This study explores the intricate interplay between trust in authorities and media, and its influence on conspiracy beliefs across eight culturally diverse countries – UK, Brazil, Germany, France, India, Spain, Argentina, and Croatia. In an era marked by rapidly evolving media landscapes and increasing dissemination of conspiracy theories, understanding the dynamics underlying emotional mobilization is crucial.
Drawing upon nationally representative survey data collected from a diverse range of participants, this study investigates the relationships between different types of trust towards authorities and media outlets, and the propensity to harbor conspiracy beliefs. In particular we examine the differential effects of trust, mistrust (i.e. being skeptical) and distrust (i.e. decidedly not trusting). Our findings reveal that individuals who actively distrust authorities and media sources are more likely to endorse conspiracy theories and that this connection is notably pronounced among individuals who perceive themselves as occupying lower rungs of the social hierarchy.
The cross-cultural perspective sheds light on the nuances of these relationships, indicating variations in the strength and direction of associations across different societies. This insight underscores the complex interplay of cultural, political, and social factors in shaping emotional responses and cognitive processes related to media consumption and trust formation.
The implications of this research are manifold, extending to both academia and society at large. By delineating the nexus between trust, media, and conspiracy beliefs, this study enriches our understanding of how emotional mobilization occurs in the context of information consumption
Framework analysis for Vision Scientists: a clear step-by-step guide
Vision sciences has traditionally been a quantitative discipline. However, to fully capture all aspects of clinical vision care, researchers increasingly need to be conversant in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. This has resulted in qualitative methodologies becoming more common in vision sciences research literature. From the authors’ perspective, vision researchers often struggle to identify suitable qualitative methodologies when coming from a tradition of a realist ontology, or the view that independent truth exists. This study explores the ontological and epistemological considerations when approaching qualitative research in vision sciences and proposes framework analysis as a qualitative methodology that is accessible for vision scientists. Framework analysis is a flexible and highly utilitarian qualitative analysis method which complements quantitative methodologies. This paper also presents a step-by-step guide for conducting framework analysis in a logical, transparent, and repeatable way that will provide a clear audit trail of how results are obtained from subjective data. This is done using a worked example from a recent eye care study
