The Influence of Elvin Jones on Steve Gadd: Accompaniment, Soloing, and Melodic Philosophy . Analyses and Biographies
No full textThis thesis focuses on identifying ways Steve Gadd has been influenced by Elvin Jones.
This can be heard specifically in Gadd’s ‘straight ahead’ playing, like in Chet Baker’s album She Was Too Good to Me and Jim Hall’s album Concerto. Conversely, while Gadd’s soloing, like in “Aja” by Steely Dan sounds like it draws from the rock and funk idioms, it also utilizes Jones’ vocabulary. They also share a similar philosophy around melody.
Accompaniment and solo transcriptions will be analyzed. Then, musical devices utilized by Gadd and Jones will be compared to demonstrate their similarities. All transcriptions are written in drum notation. Also included are biographies of both Gadd and Jones for context and to demonstrate similarities between their lives
