The terrifying blank page: Exploring how behavioural insights and boost interventions can help writers get started and stay focused on their learning and writing goals
Procrastination and distraction are common challenges for writers. This study explores whether applying behavioural insights, which have emerged over the past few decades from fields such as behavioural economics, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, can support writers in learning how to develop a more consistent writing practice. Rather than relying on willpower or discipline, behavioural insights can be used to structure a person’s environment to help them make better decisions that are in line with their goals. Using a methodology inspired by action research, the study explored if using these insights could help the participant writers develop a more regular practice and whether the experience would improve their creativity, as judged by the writers themselves. While this study involved a small group of writers, there are some practices and interventions that could also be beneficial to adult learners who are struggling to self-regulate. While behavioural insights have been applied and studied in a number of fields, their use in adult learning has been limited. Overall, the experiences of the participant writers indicate that the program helped them stick to their writing commitment, and they reported feeling more creative during the eight weeks of the study
