A Light-Activated Approach to Water Purification: Improving the Quality of Drinking Water in Canada’s Indigenous Communities
The urgency of the freshwater crisis among Canada’s First Nation’s communities reinforces the necessity for the design of reliable water purification methods to ensure unquestionable ability of all populations in Canada to have access to clean drinking water. This contribution will discuss the promise of environmentally friendly materials, titanium dioxide and biochar, to degrade the common textile and pharmaceutical pollutants to be removed from aqueous environments using light as the main energy source. Light-activated, or photo-, purification holds many advantages compared to traditional routes, including minimized energy cost and elimination of harsh chemical treatments. Representative samples of methylene blue and antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and tetracycline) were mixed with a TiO2/biochar catalyst provided by the MacQuarrie group at Cape Breton University. The influence of a variety of experimental parameters, such as reaction time, catalyst type and catalyst synthesis method, were studied to optimize the ability of these novel materials to remove these common waterway pollutants from solution

Faith in Flux: A narrative approach to understanding the processes and factors through which adult Christians navigate experiences of religious doubt.
This research project uses transformative learning theory to explore the factors and processes through which adult Christians make sense of an experience of religious doubt or dissonance. Through narrative-style interviews, the experiences of four research participants are explored in detail for how they respond to religious doubt – which for the purpose of this research is considered tantamount to the disorienting dilemma that launches the transformative learning process. Participants’ experiences reveal that one’s faith community plays a significant role in how one responds to an instance of religious doubt, including whether people feel they have permission to share their feelings of doubt or whether such feelings are considered taboo. How power is wielded in faith communities – particularly through the lens of race and authority – can also play a factor in this dynamic. Through the lens of transformative learning theory, navigating religious doubt takes place using both cognitive and non-cognitively based approaches, with some strategies making use of both approaches at once – problematizing a binary that considers transformation as “either” cognitively or non-cognitively driven. The role of reflective practice is also considered in terms of its ability to facilitate transformation and help learners understand they have transformed in the first place
